THE PITY OF WAR. EXPLAINING WORLD WAR I., Ferguson, Niall.
8 Ferguson, Niall. THE PITY OF WAR. EXPLAINING WORLD WAR I.
Basic Books, New York, 1999, book club edition.
563 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, tables, graphs. "More than four million Americans were mobilized in 1917-18, of whom more than 100,000 were killed - double the number who died in Vietnam. This was the fir st, bloody step on the road to globalism which would characterize our foreign policy for the rest of the twentieth century. Even American literature was transformed by the impact of the war on writers like Hemingway and Fitzgerald. Internat i o n a l l y , more than any other event, the First World War made the twentieth century what it was: It toppled the four great empires of the Old World and left a fifth - the British - mortgaged to the hilt. More than nine million men lost their li ve s, y et n on e of its stated objectives were met. Rather, it spawned seven decades of Communist rule in Russia, the rise of Adolf Hitler's Third Reich, and the horror of the Holocaust. Now, as the century draws to a close, the time is righ t f or a r adi cal re ass essment of the 'Great War'. In (this book, the author) explodes the myths of 1914-18. He argues that the fatal conflict between Britain and Germany was far from inevitable. It was Britain's declaration of war that needl essl y t urne d a cont inen tal conflict into a world war, and it was Britain's economic mismanagement and military inferiority that necessitated American involvement, forever altering the global balance of power. Ferguson vividly brings back to li fe on e of the semi nal c atast roph es of the century, not through a dry citation of chronological chapter and verse, but through a series of brilliant chapters that answer the key questions: Why did the war start? Why did it continue? And why did it st op? How d id th e Germ ans ma nage to kill more soldiers than they lost but still end up defeated in November 1918? Above all, why did men fight?" Minor rubbing, tiny bump at top of front hinge. Dust jacket has one tiny edge tear and minor browni ng o n spin e. Ve ry Good +/Very Good+

Bilingual French/English Introduction / Location of Documents / List of Persons / Captions to Illustrations / Indexes. Main text English only. This volume "deals with the evolution of Canadian policy during the middle years of the war, from the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, until the end of 1943. During those years, attention shifted from working out the bases of Canada's participation, as 'a belligerent second only to Britain as a Commonwealth military power', to an attempt to define this country's place in an Allied war effort dominated by much larger nations. That effort was important not only because Canadians were concerned about the conduct of the war itself but also because precedents were being established which would profoundly affect their interests once peace returned. It was a time of testing Canada's sovereignty and for determining the recognition which the country might expect for its contribution to victory." Chapter headings: Conduct of External Relations; Conduct of War; Post-War Planning; United Nations Organizations and Conferences; Other International Organizations and Conferences; Commonwealth Relations; Relations with the United States; Relations with France; Bilateral Relations; Appendices. 15 Innes, Michael. THE GAY PHOENIX.
London Gollancz 1976 0575021454 / 9780575021457 First British Edition Very Good Very Good+
192 pp, 8vo (8" H). "A small yacht adrift in mid-Pacific, its main-mast snapped, its navigator dead - that's the highly intriguing (and most uncharacteristic) opening of Michael Innes's latest story. The dead man is Charles Povey, a maverick tycoon. And there's a survivor on board: his brother Arthur, who, when at last he is picked up, semi-delirious, is assumed for several convincing reasons to be Charles himself. As Charles was the wealthy brother, Arthur is very ready to accept the error in identification. He proceeds to enjoy the fleshpots. But of course he also has to have a shot at running Charles's confused financial empire. And, not surprisingly, there are one or two people who see through the impersonation, and make their blackmailing demands. Arthur is driven to marriage, crime, attempted murder and desperation. Unhappily for Arthur, he buys a country estate which makes him a neighbour of that greatest of detectives, Sir John Appleby, sometime head of Scotland Yard. Appleby is in retirement now, but he cannot resist a mystery almost on his own doorstep, and he is soon investigating." afew tiny foxing marks on top of textblock, tiny bump at top of rear hinge. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling.

19 Maling, Arthur. LUCKY DEVIL
London Victor Gollancz 1978 0575025581 / 9780575025585 First British Edition Very Good Very Good
243 pp, 8"H. "Brock Potter of the New York brokerage firm of Price, Potter and Petacque again faces a baffling problem. It all begins when a harmless old lady is pushed off a subway platform and killed. She happened to have Brock's name and address in her pocket, and Homicide want to know why. Brock can't tell them: he has never heard of her. But when he begins his own enquiries he finds that she was the chief stockholder of some worthless mining stock called Lucky Devil, and that a man from Salt Lake City had been putting pressure on her to sell to him. Brock and his left-hand man Brian Barth, pay a visit to Salt Lake City, and to the derelict mine, and have some very odd adventures with the very odd collection of people associated with Lucky Devil. But why whould anyone want to control of this worthless stock, and want it badly enough to commit murder (a couple of attempts are made on Brock's life too). No, the answer isn't that the old mine contains uranium. In fact, we defy any reader to come up with the solution before Mr Maling reveals it, for it's totally original. The intriguing brokerage background, the technical data, and the speed of an exciting story combine to make the book outstandingly suspenseful reading." PRESCRIPTION FOR PROFITS: HOW THE PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRY BANKROLLED THE UNHOLY MARRIAGE BETWEEN SCIENCE AND BUSINESS., Marsa, Linda.
20 Marsa, Linda. PRESCRIPTION FOR PROFITS: HOW THE PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRY BANKROLLED THE UNHOLY MARRIAGE BETWEEN SCIENCE AND BUSINESS.
Scribner, (New York, 1997).
304 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs. "...tracks the rise and fall of research science as told through the spectacular growth of the pharmaceutical industry. As Marsa shows, the achievements of American science during the postwar era were stellar: the cure for polio, the cracking of the genetic code, the pioneering drug therapies. In the early 1970s, though, such scientists as Herbert Boyer discerned the rewards of launching their own companies. He led an exodus of his colleagues into the burgeoning biotechnology industry - at first a trickle, then a flood. The major companies grew filthy rich and politically powerful, particularly because of deregulation during the Reagan administration. The lure of huge profits dramatically changed medical research with ramifications that continue to affect our lives profoundly. From Nixon's war on cancer to the current AIDS crisis to the future of human gene therapy, this marriage between medical research and corporate money has transformed our nation's health, and not always for the public's good..." Tiny dent to top edge of boards, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, small crease at bottom edge of approx. pages 30 to 80. Dust jacket has minor rubbing, light wrinkling to edges - a little more at top/bottom of spine. VG+/VG
