ARMS & ARMOUR OF THE SAMURAI. (ARMOR.), Bottomley, I. and Hopson, A.P.
2 Bottomley, I. and Hopson, A.P. ARMS & ARMOUR OF THE SAMURAI. (ARMOR.)
Bison, London, 1988, first edition.
192 pp, 4to (12 1/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 086124415X Profusely illustrated in colour and b&w with photographs, reproductions, drawings. "A member of the aristocracy, from the tenth century the Samurai was primarily a mounted archer . This is reflected in the light, lamellar yoroi armour which left the right arm free for drawing his bow. Helmets were simple, with leather neckpieces. Battle began with an exchange of arrows, and was followed by a series of hand-to-han d c o m b a t s among champions who relied on the sword. The long wars of Kusonoki and Ashikaga produced several changes in the nature of warfare. Fighting in wooded, mountainous countryside, hand-to-hand combat came into its own. The bulky yor oi wa s su pe rc ed ed by the lighter, less constricting do maru and the no dachi, a longer version of the naginata (glaive), was introduced. The renowned Samurai cult of the sword began in this period. The Samurai's most ornate and elaborate ar mou r da te s f rom th e T oku gawa era, and was probably not intended for use in actual battle. The long development of arms and armour in the Samurai's 700-year history is fully detailed in this handsome volume. Illustrated with over 300 photo grap hs , (i t) will be a we lcom e ad dition to the libraries of all military enthusiasts." Small bump to top of front hinge, two tiny corner bumps, slight bump to bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear, moderate edge wrinkling - mainl y at top edge , l ight rub marks , tin y scu ff at bottom of spine, scattered light foxing marks on inside top edge, small light soiling marks and tiny surface paper pull on inside surface of rear panel. 3 Cane, Melville. (Melville Henry Cane, 1879-1980.) JANUARY GARDEN / BEHIND DARK SPACES / A WIDER ARC. THREE INSCRIBED BOOKS + LETTERS AND ADDITIONAL PAPERS.
New York Harcourt Brace First Editions. Hard Cover Good Inscribed By Author
A collection of three first edition hard covers in dust jackets, each inscribed by the author, plus additional material. Melville Henry Cane, 1879-1980, was a graduate of Columbia University and partner in the law firm Ernst, Fox & Cane in New York, where he was legal counsel to Sinclair Lewis, Upton Sinclair, Ayn Rand, William, Saroyan, Thomas Wolfe and others. He was also a poet, producing several volumes of verse, writing "Making a Poem" in 1953 and winning the Robert Frost Medal for lifetime achievement in 1971. The books: 1. January Garden, 1926, 70 pp, 8 1/2" H, black cloth spine with white paper title label/black lettering on spine, black paper covered boards, top edge orange, orange endpapers. Inscribed on title page: "For Tommy Atkins / From his old friend, / Melville Cane 4/1/26". Orange dust jacket with black lettering/decoration. 2. Behind Dark Spaces, 1930, 80 pp, 8 1/2" H, bright blue cloth spine with gilt lettering, yellow paper covered boards, yellow endpapers. Inscribed on dedication page: "To G.C. Atkins, / Send your grade A honey to / Melville Cane / 64 Wright St. / Westport, / Conn." Yellow dust jacket with black lettering/decoration. 3. A Wider Arc: Poems, 1947, 186 pp, 8 5/8" H, black cloth with gilt lettering on spine, white endpapers. Inscribed on title page (Cane has crossed out his printed name): "For Tommy / From Melville, / April '47. This volume includes a prose piece, "Making a Poem". Dust jacket has red spine/front panel with white lettering, white rear panel with red lettering. ALSO: 5 letters/notes on Ernst, Fox & Cane letterhead to G.C. Atkins (George Chew "Tommy" Atkins), a fellow Columbia graduate and lawyer who moved to a farm in Ontario, Canada in 1921. 1. Full sheet, holograph, signed "Melville", dated March 31/26. References the "sporty" proposition of exchanging Cane's first book of verse for some of Tommy's apples, commenting on Tommy's giving up of "this unproductive law activity and grow(ing) something worthwhile." In response to an invitation to visit Ontario, Cane says that he happens "to be the only person in America out of jail who hasn't a car." 2. Half sheet, holograph, signed "Melville", dated April 7/26. References the arrival of the apples and the finding of three with soft spots, but continuing "if you find only three poems with soft spots, it'll be a stand-off." 3. Full sheet, typed, signed "Melville Cane", dated April 20th, 1926. Comments favorably on Tommy's idea of raising turkeys, but "do not expect epics from me in exchange." Mentions he has conveyed Tommy's greetings to Harcourt and Brace (Cane was on their board of directors). 4. Full sheet, holograph, signed "Melville", dated 3/9/33. Comments on the university's (Columbia's), and the general, lack of appreciation for poets and mentioning that he is sending "a couple of specimens (of poetry) of different moods." (see below). 5. Half sheet, holograph, signed "Melville', dated 6/25/51. Mentioning the death of a mutual acquaintance and hoping Tommy will visit. The first two pieces in this group have pencil notations at the bottom, probably by Tommy. WITH: a group of four poems. Three are typed on full sheets of paper, each with one correction in pen and one with a pencil quotation from a poem by John Erskine (a mutual friend). "Melville Cane" is typed at the bottom of each of these sheets, but they are NOT signed. The three poems ("Hymn to Night", "Petition" and "Ancient Organ Grinder") were later published in "A Wider Arc". "Hymn to Night" and "Ancient Organ Grider" were included with Cane's letter to Tommy of 3/9/33. The fourth poem, on a 3 1/4" square scrap of paper, is handwritten in ink, with crossings out and smears and refers to honeybees - it was tucked into "Behind Dark Spaces", at the dedication page, where Cane gives Tommy directions on where to send his honey. WITH: Three items relating to Bernard M.L. Ernst, Cane's long-time friend, fellow Columbia graduate and partner in the law firm of Ernst, Fox & Cane. Ernst was also president of the New York Branch of the Society American Magicians and Vice President of the Magicians' Club of London. 1. "an address / by Melville H. Cane / delivered at the funeral of / Bernard M.L. Ernst / at Earl Hall, Columbia / University, November 30, / 1938" - [8] pp (not including covers), stapled, 7 3/4" H. 2. Holograph note in envelope from Roberta Ernst to Mr. Atkins, thanking him for his "kind note' and commenting on Ernst's last days. 3. Typed slip of paper (approx. 2 5/8" H x 8 7/16" W) with a quote from "Quicker Than the Eye" by John Mulholland, mentioning Ernst as "One of the best loved men in magic". 1. 5 Coates, Ken and McGuinness, Fred. With Roger Newman. THE KEYSTONE PROVINCE; AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY OF MANITOBA ENTERPRISE.
Burlington, Ontario Windsor Publications 1988 0897812573 / 9780897812573 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
184 pp, 11 1/4" H. B&w and colour photographs, reproductions. "(The authors) describe Manitoba's beginnings as a fur trade empire under the Hudson's Bay Company. They depict the development of the province's resources and potential as a national priority when, in 1870, a very small Province of Manitoba was created to spearhead the development of a western agrarian empire. Working within a changing social and economic climate, entrepreneurs struggled to establish Winnipeg as the West's premier city, and situated that city as the hub of a transportation and distribution network that supported the province's heartland. Ranging forward, the authors' accounting of the province's role in agriculture, industry, hydro, mining, and tourism is given within the context of national and international forces. Roger Newman has prepared histories of selected Manitoba businesses and organizations whose contributions to the development of the Keystone Province should not go unrecorded." Minor wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling.

6 Cockfield, Jamie H. WITH SNOW ON THEIR BOOTS: THE TRAGIC ODYSSEY OF THE RUSSIAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCE IN FRANCE DURING WORLD WAR I.
New York St. Martin's Griffin 1999 0312173563 / 9780312173562 Soft Cover Very Good
396 pp, 8 3/16" H. B&w photographs. "In 1916, in an exchange of human flesh for war material, the Russian government sent to France two brigades to fight on the side of their French allies. By the end of World War I, these two brigades had experienced their own form of the Russian Revolution, had been isolated at a southern training post in a disciplinary move by the French government, had battled against each other in what was one of the first confrontations of the Russian Civil War, and had emerged from the conflict as a single force, the Russian Legion of Honor, which would remain loyal to France until the end of the war. The remarkable story of these Russian soldiers has been basically overlooked by historians - until now. (This book) explores the journey and transformation of these men and, in doing so, examines the impact of the revolution on the Russians who were caught in the middle of wartime alliances and nationalist ardor. A microcosm of the political, social, and military struggle that was to occur in Russia in 1917 and in the years to follow, (it) also looks at the changes in the relationship between France and Russia during and after the war." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - minor edge wear, three light creases down spine, minor soiling on bottom of book.

"Canada's declaration of war against Germany in 1939 marked the beginning of the most significant eighteen-year period in the history of this nation. By the end of the Liberal regime in 1957 the country had undergone immense growth in human and material resources. The experience of the Second World War had been followed by participation in the Korean War and ten years of the Cold War. The Great Depression had given way to a boom which had continued through the exchange crisis, serious inflation and minor recessions. In addition, new life had been generated in the arts. The new road which Canada chose to follow led directly to a new world of planning and management, of economic controls and social equalization." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has wrinkling at top/bottom of spine - light elsewhere, rubbing and scratch to glossy front panel, a few tiny tears archivally taped, tiny scuff and tiny dent on rear panel, minor soiling.

THE GUARDS: BRITAIN'S HOUSEHOLD DIVISION. EUROPA MILITARIA No. 20., Dunstan, Simon.
9 Dunstan, Simon. THE GUARDS: BRITAIN'S HOUSEHOLD DIVISION. EUROPA MILITARIA No. 20.
Windrow & Greene, (London, 1996).
64 pp, small 4to (10 1/4" H), soft cover. Profusely illustrated with color photographs. "Unlike the household troops of many heads of state, The Guards have combined their role as the personal bodyguard of the Sovereign with an unsurpassed fighting tradition. This tradition is the cement that binds them together within The Household Division, whose motto is Septem Juncta in Uno - Seven Joined in One. Although The Household Division is an adminstrative rather than a fighting formation and although The Guards are most visible today for their central part in London's spectacular occasions of military and State pageantry, the Regiments are first and foremost professional soldiers, ready to exchange their ceremonial uniforms for comb at fatigues at short notice - as they proved most recently in the Falklands and Gulf Wars. Both aspects of their unique character are fully covered in the more than 120 superb colour photos specially taken for this book by a respected military photographer and author." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - clean and bright. Fine.

UNDIPLOMATIC NOTES: TALES FROM THE CANADIAN FOREIGN SERVICE., Freifeld, Sidney. Illustrated by Susan Macartney.
14 Freifeld, Sidney. Illustrated by Susan Macartney. UNDIPLOMATIC NOTES: TALES FROM THE CANADIAN FOREIGN SERVICE.
Hounslow Press / Anthony R. Hawke, Willowdale, Ontario, 1990.
194 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0888821263 B&w illustrations. "Behind formal negotiations are events sometimes too hilarious (and human) for academic histories. Beneath serene exteriors are people, who, from time to time, are clowns. And often, the expectations of dignity and protocol only serve to heighten the antics. From his 30-year career, Sidney Freifeld - at various desks at headquarters and in various embassies, up through the ranks, to ambassador - recollects some of these tales. He has gleaned others from colleagues or 'unofficial' files. Among the treats in (this book): Castro's table manners at an impromptu dinner; The circus of incivility created by the arrogance of the Ceausescu clan and their entourage; Calls in the night to deal with Moscow's howling cats; Australian VIPs lost in the bowels of the Chateau Laurier; A Canadian embassy held at gun-point, by a Canadian; and Poetry to protest External's policy on decorations. Legations run like military outposts, the needs of beavers in transit, and the exchange of diplomatic notes over a baseball game are more subjects for 'Undiplomatic Notes'. And for the uninitiated there are some useful chapters on what really, really, goes on." Previous owner's label on front pastedown, bump to bottom edge of pages, small bump to top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Very Good-/Very Good+

London Stamp Exchange, London, 1989, facsimile edition.
148 pp, 6 13/16" H, hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0948130628 "This little Victorian gem was (first) published in 1854, the first year of the Crimean War....The accounts of the battles are cursory, but the real fascination of the book lies in the biographical details of some two hundred officers who were killed or who died in those first few months of the war, written as they are in that flowery Victorian prose. They contain a great deal that would be of interest to the historian, genealogist and researcher as well as to regimental records. There is a separate list of officers wounded, divided in two parts; one for those wounded up to Balaklava (25th October) and the other for subsequent casualties. Finally there is a calendar for 1854 detailing incidents of the war." On 4 August 1873 Qu een Victoria approved a revision of the scheme under which the Harpur Trust operates. This book traces in lively detail the educational battles of the past up to those of today. It shows how the Trust till 1897 supplied practically all Be d f o r d ' s e ducation. It describes how government intervention obliged the Trust to concentrate on four main schools, which have since become know all over the world. The subject matter goes beyond Bedford and Bedfordshire. The book oulines th e ba si s fo r t he Trust's work, the development of farmland in the village of Holborn to becoming part of the heart of London. This endowment has made the Trust one of the most important educational foundations in the country. Comparisons wi th ot her sc ho ols i nd ica te the rich complexity of England's educational system. The influx of service and professional families brought to Bedford boys and girls who later served country and Commonwealth, and an appendix gives some indicatio n o f t heir ran ge of s erv ice ."
