DIEPPE 1942: THE JUBILEE DISASTER., Atkin, Ronald.
1 Atkin, Ronald. DIEPPE 1942: THE JUBILEE DISASTER.
London Macmillan 1980 0333191870 / 9780333191873 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
306 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H). B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "At dawn on 19 August 1942, five thousand Allied soldiers landed at the French port of Dieppe in the first major test of the defence of the German-held coastline of Europe since Dunkirk. The codename given to the operation was 'Jubilee' and its aim was to capture Dieppe and the headlands which dominate the town, hold them for a few hours and provide the Allied war planners with the vital information they needed about enemy preparedness for the Second Front demanded by the Russians to relieve their sorely-pressed armies in the East. In nine hours of carnage and horror 'Jubilee' became a disaster. A combination of over-rigid planning, inadequate supporting firepower and - in the final hours before the raid - sheer bad luck, inflicted on the Allies one of their worst defeats in a war which was already going badly. British Commandos carried out the flank attacks against coastal gun batteries which dominated the seaward approaches to Dieppe and one of these raids, led by Lord Lovat, was spectacularly successful. But the assault on the port itself and the beaches on either side of Dieppe, the task of the Canadian 2nd Division, was a disastrous and bloody failure. Ronald Atkin has pieced together the full story of that day at Dieppe from all sides - British, Canadian, German and French - and from sources which include official documents and reports and most graphic of all, the reminiscences of the men of both sides who planned and fought in Operation 'Jubilee'. The result is a masterly account of one of the most extraordinary - and tragic - episodes of the Second World War." Minor finger mark on front free end paper, tiny faint stain on fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket has been price clipped, has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very light rubbing.

NICHOLAS HILLIARD., Auerbach, Erna.
2 Auerbach, Erna. NICHOLAS HILLIARD.
Boston Boston Book & Art Shop 1964 Hard Cover Very Good Good+ Nicholas Hilliard.
352 pp, small 4to (10" H). Over 200 reproductions of Hilliard's work, mainly in b&w. "This is the first full-length monograph to be written on the life and work of Nicholas Hilliard who lived from 1547 to 1619. The first English-born painter to gain the status of an artist recognised by the English court, he was painter, limner, engraver and goldsmith to Queen Elizabeth I and later to James I, and is kown to have also painted portraits in oil, but it is difficult to attribute particular oil portraits to his hand. Hilliard's importance is not limited by his performance as a miniaturist, for the style of his miniatures had a major influence on the general trend of English painting, and dominated the manner of contemporary English portraiture, both life-size and miniature. (He) was equally eminent as a goldsmith and he practised this craft throughout his life. Much new biographical material has been found which establishes Hilliard as a great Elizabethan." Small bump to top corners of boards, minor browning to page edges. Dust jacket is moderately browned - mainly on inside surface, is price clipped, has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling - mainly to top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

Toronto The Champlain Society 1980 Limited Edition Hard Cover Very Good+
229 pp, large 8vo (9 3/4" H) - red cloth with gilt lettering/crest on spine. No. 844 of Twelve Hundred and Fifty Copies of this Volume prnted for the Champlain Society. B&w photographs, maps, reproductions. "John Prince was undoubtedly one of the most colourful individuals to reside in Upper Canada during the half century that preceded Confederation. (The mythology that had grown up around his memory in southwestern Ontario identified him as the product of an illegal marriage between George IV and Maria Anne Fitzherbert.) His eventful career as an attorney, politician, soldier, entrepreneur, and jurist caused him to become a legend in his own lifetime both in Essex County, where he resided at Sandwich from his arrival in 1833 until 1860, and in Sault Ste Marie where he spent the last ten years of his life as Judge of the Algoma District. In the legislature his independence and erratic individualism soon earned him the reputation of a political maverick. Business interests and entrepreneurial instincts attracted him to railway and banking ventures as early as the 1830s. Individualist and eccentric though he was, John Prince was still very much a man of his age." Minor wear at corners.

8 Due, John F. THE INTERCITY ELECTRIC RAILWAY INDUSTRY IN CANADA.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1966 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
118 pp, 10 1/8" H. Canadian Studies in Economics No.18. B&w photographs, maps, tables, graphs. "The intercity electric railway industry in Canada, which began in 1887, ended in 1959. Peak interest in the industry was between 1910 and 1920, the era of Sir Adam Beck's projected radial network that would have covered much of the southern portion of Ontario. But the plans came too late and the radial system was never built. The Canadian electric lines developed later than their United States counterparts, but lasted somewhat longer, and for a time in the 1950's there were more electric passenger-carrying trains in Canada than in the United States. This study describes the rise and decline of the electric railway industry in Canada. It includes a general history of the industry, the development of the lines, their financing and control, and a brief but fascinating account of the 25 individual companies which operated the roads." Tiny wrinkle at bottom of front hinge, tiny ink mark on rear board. Dust jacket has very light rubbing, small tear at top of front hinge - archivally taped.

VICTORY IN THE ST. LAWRENCE: CANADA'S UNKNOWN WAR., Essex, James W.
10 Essex, James W. VICTORY IN THE ST. LAWRENCE: CANADA'S UNKNOWN WAR.
Erin, Ontario Boston Mills Press 1984 0919822568 / 9780919822566 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
160 pp, 11 1/4" H. Map endpapers (showing locations of ships torpedoed in Gulf and River of St. Lawrence and Canada's Coastal Waters), b&w photographs, drawings. "The sailor next to me reached into his topcoat pocket and hurriedly proferred a crumpled photograph. I recognized it as the military funeral of 1942 at the tiny Anglican Church just down the road. It was the burial of a seaman from the HMCS 'Charlottetown', one of several who had been rescued, only to die of wounds later. He was killed in Canada by the Nazis. This book in a real sense, then, is his story and the story of hundreds of others who perished because of the German U-boats in the St. Lawrence. As Cmdr. George Bernard, Naval Officer in Command, Gaspe from 1943 to the war's end said in later years: 'In 1942, marauding U-Boats entered the Gulf of St. Lawrence and did a great deal of damage. They roamed the Gulf and River St. Lawrence at will and were seldom opposed. They sank Canadian warships and valuable merchant vessels almost with impunity.' According to Bernard, it was for this reason that Canadian authorities played down the episode. They were prepared to accept the consequences because warships which might have attacked the U-boats invading our inland waters were wanted more urgently elsewhere. This was 'Victory in the St. Lawrence' - initially for the German U-boat: Canada's turn would come next. But what happened to both remained locked in the memories of the participants only now being revealed long years after the war ended. This was 'Canada's Unknown War'." Minor wrinkle at top of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing.

ECCENTRIC BRITAIN: A GUIDE TO BRITAIN'S BIZARRE BUILDINGS, PECULIAR PLACES AND OFFBEAT EVENTS., Hannigan, Des.
14 Hannigan, Des. ECCENTRIC BRITAIN: A GUIDE TO BRITAIN'S BIZARRE BUILDINGS, PECULIAR PLACES AND OFFBEAT EVENTS.
London New Holland 2004 1843307316 / 9781843307310 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+ Chris Coe, photography.
160 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H). Profusely illustrated with colour photographs, maps. "The British have always held the franchise on eccentricity. Throughout this fascinating offshore and off-centre island - from Cornwall's spectacular Land's End to Scotland's lonely northern outpost of John o' Groats - the dramatic and magnificent story of Britain has always been punctuated by the quirky, the irreverent and the downright dotty. (This book) explores every quirky corner of the nation from the outrageous expose of Dorset's Cerne Abbas giant, outlined in chalk on a green hillside in all its rude glory, to chasing cheeses down helter-skelter hillsides in Cambridgeshire. Farther north things may get colder, but they're still crazy with it. There's the highest pub in England at Yorkshire's Tan Hill and a Lake District lighthouse that is miles from the sea. Wales and Scotland are not far behind either when it comes to mad-hattery. Where else would you find people eager to submerge themselves for fun in a freezing Welsh bog? And how about Scotland, with a pineapple-shaped house and the world's best worst poet? Organized by area with maps that show the location of every bizarre building, peculiar place and offbeat event and illustrated throughout with superb specially commissioned photography, this book will entertain, enlighten and more than often raise the odd eyebrow." Light edge wear at top/bottom of spine and at corners, small bump on fore-edge of both boards. Dust jacket has minor rubbing, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, and on flap-folds.

THE FLIGHT OF THE MEW GULL., Henshaw, Alex.
15 Henshaw, Alex. THE FLIGHT OF THE MEW GULL.
London John Murray 1980 0719537401 / 9780719537400 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
310 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w photographs, maps, drawings. "(Alex Henshaw) had the luck to grow up in the '20s and '30s during the golden age of flying and thanks to his father's generous encouragement it was not long before he had his own Gipsy Moth. From that moment there was no looking back. The Blue Riband of flying in the British Isles between the two World Wars was the King's Cup: Henshaw set his heart on it, developing a technique of racing which extracted the very maximum from his aircraft: first the Comper Swift and then the DH Leopard Moth. Parallel with his search for speed was an obsession with making accurate landfalls, and he developed this blind-flying talent deliberately in a flying partnership with his father on many carefully planned long-distance survey flights. His exciting apprenticeship in these two skills was crowned by the acquisition of the Percival Mew Gull G-AEXF in 1937. After many initial successes with the machine Henshaw became associated with Jack Cross of Essex Aero Ltd at Gravesend who became primarily responsible for the racing and long distance preparations. First fruits of this partnerships was victory in the King's Cup of 1938 at a speed that was the fastest of any winning aircraft at any time. This was closely followed by an amazing solo flight to Cape Town and back in February 1939 establishing several solo records that still stand today, over forty years later. This feat of navigation and airmanship must surely be one of man's greatest flights - 12,754 miles over desert, sea and jungle in a single-engined light aircraft. Alex Henshaw tells his story in a vivid style that puts you at the heart of all his battles and adventures." Small light bump at top of rear hinge, slight waviness to edges of text block. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top of rear hinge and rear flap-fold.

As might be expected, the photos depict a dramatic reworking of the urban environment, particularly on the 'urban frontier' where the countryside is disappearing under a wave of development. But even our seemingly changeless rural scenery, when viewed with the aid of time-lapse photography, is shown to be evolving - and in some unexpected ways."
