CHILDREN OF THE BENARES: A WAR CRIME AND ITS VICTIMS., Barker, Ralph.
1 Barker, Ralph. CHILDREN OF THE BENARES: A WAR CRIME AND ITS VICTIMS.
Methuen, London, 1987, first edition.
172 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0413423107 B&w photographs. "When the passenger liner 'City of Benares' sailed from Liverpool on Friday, 13 September 1940 she was carrying 90 evacuee children from the bombed cities of Brit ain, bound under a government-sponsored scheme for a safe haven in Canada. Her sinking by U-boat four days later, without warning, in total disregard of the plight of survivors and in defiance of international law, shocked and horrified the c i v i l i s ed world. Of 406 people on board 256 were lost - including, at first count, 83 of the evacuee children. In Britain and the Commonwealth the reaction was one of righteous indignation, accompanied by an intense desire for retribution. N or w as t he propaganda value neglected, a broadcast by King George VI the day after the news broke being clearly directed at neutral America. 'The world,' he said, 'could have no clearer proof of the wickedness against which we fight than th is fou l d eed '. Su s picions subsequently arose, however, that the British authorities had quite as much to answer for as the Nazis. Parents who, despite many misgivings, had entrusted their children to the scheme when invasion threatened, began to ask que stio ns when t hey learned that the promised naval escort had abandoned the convoy twenty-one hours before the 'Benares' was sunk. Allegations that crew members rushed the boats, that emergency equipment had failed, and that the whol e vo yage had b een u nde rtake n u nder the blight of racial prejudice, demanded a formal investigation. But somehow this was avoided, and the scandal was successfully hushed up. Ralph Barker, after a vivid and poignant reconstruction of the disa ster, turn s his attent ion to wha t re ally happened behind the scenes at the Admiralty and the Ministry of Shipping. The result is a harrowing story of human fallibility and human survival." Light to moderate browning to pages and edges of text block , mino r wrin kling a t to p/botto m of spine. 6 Coulehan, Norbert. QUADRANTUS REX.
Macmillan, London, 1959, first edition.
298 pp, small 8vo (7 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "In the second year B.C. the Emperor Augustus decided to call a conference for world peace, 'Pax Mundana', and despatched a young sea tribune, Titus to collect and escort to Rome the three gr eat Kings from Africa, Asia and the Baltic. This, in the first place, is the story of how Titus carried out his unusual assignment, the hazards and dangers of his voyages and his difficulties, both practical and diplomatic, with his noble c h a r g e s . But no less important than the sea tribune is Quadrantus, the Master of the squaresailer in which he travelled. It is soon apparent that this is no ordinary ship and Quadrantus is no ordinary master: a giant of a man, he runs his du mb c re w wi th u n canny precision and his navigation and seamanship verge on the miraculous. After the fruitless conference, Titus and Quadrantus escort the three Kings on what seems a hopeless mission to King Herod. Guided by a strange st a r, the Ki ngs a re lan ded n ear Philippi, and the half-whispered stories of the phenomena which heralded the Birth of Christ and the legend of a fourth King who set off for Bethlehem with his fellows yet failed to arrive, are given an unexpect ed tw ist when see n t hro ugh the mir ror of Norbert Coulehan's narrative." "In April 1943, the Royal Canadian Navy assumed responsibility for Canadian Northwest Atlantic Command, the only operational area to be run by a Canadian Commander-in-Chief during the Second World War. (This book) describes the RCN's long, challenging journey from the outbreak of the war in September 1939 to the momentous events of Spring 1943. Based on extensive research in Canadian, British, American and German archives, (it) describes the mobilization of the naval service during the first half of the war, measures its response to the demanding, ever-changing strategic situations that confronted the Allies, and analyses the service of our ships and sailors on the North Atlantic, Pacific and Mediterranean seas as well as the defence of Canadian waters. With the main focus on the Battle of the Atlantic, this important and well-illustrated history demonstrates how Canadian naval forces proved indispensable to victory in that most critical campaign of the Second World War." Robin Brass Studio, Toronto, 2000, reprint.
312 pp, oblong 8vo (8" H x 9" D), soft cover. ISBN 1896941141 B&w drawings by the author/artist. "As a boy growing up on the Prairies in the Depression, (the author) dreamed of going to sea, became a sea cadet at HMS Undaunted in Calgary, and in 1938 joined the Royal Canadian Navy as an officer cadet, training with the Royal Navy in Britain until 1941. His wartime service began on HMS Renown in the South Atlantic, searching for the Graf Spee, and off Norway engaging the battleships Scharnh orst and Gneisenau. He lost all his possessions when Renown was damaged by shellfire. He served on HMS Matabele and HMS Hood, leaving that ship weeks before she was sunk with all hands in battle with the Bismarck. Returning to Canada in la t e 1 9 4 1 , he was appointed to HMCS Ottawa, a destroyer on convoy escort duty in the North Atlantic. A year later she was sunk with great loss of life in a battle with German submarines. Jenson was among the lucky ones plucked from the Atlant ic b y a B ri ti sh corvette. He joined HMCS Niagara as executive officer, and in late 1943 briefly commanded the corvette Long Branch before going on to the destroyer Algonquin as executive officer, taking part in raids on German ships, includi ng the T irp itz , a nd being one of the ships to open fire on the shore defences in the invasion of Normandy. Algonquin completed the war raiding German shipping and escorting Allied convoys to Murmansk. The book is illustrated with L.B. Jenson' s l umin ous lin e dr awin gs, as well as sketches and diagrams illustrating uniforms, insignia and so on. His book is a valuable record not only of how ships fought the battles of the Atlantic, but of life on board, where men had to live under d iffi cult cond ition s for week s on end - all seen through the eyes of an energetic and engaging young officer." Free Press, New York, 1991, book club edition.

"(T)ells the complete story of the Great War's air battles, from eastern and western front, from the skies and seas of Europe to those of the Middle East a nd Africa. Based on exhaustive research - official records, scholarly works, diaries, correspondence, memoirs, and oral history transcripts - (this) unique history traces the airplane's prewar debut and development and its appeal to all bell i g e r e n t s large and small, who raced to develop their own designs, strategies and tactics. Kennett shows how the plane, used first as a frail 'flying observation platform', evolved into a weapon of destruction and death whose power was made i nc on tr ov er ti bl e by 1916 at the great battle of Verdun. While he chronicles the struggle for dominance in the air, the author also provides insight into the role of flying weaponry in the great land battles. As the combat role of these amazi ng mac hin es bec ame mo re defined, their use became more diverse, as witnessed by the development of massed fighters, the emergence of close air support, strategic bombing, and anti-aircraft defenses, and the introduction escort and patrol work a nd anti subm ari ne w arfa re a t sea. Here, to, are the daring men who volunteered to pilot these newfangled machines. Following them through flight school and into fighting units, Kennett dramatically recreates both the dangers of airborne comba t a nd th e boi ster ous, roman tic w orld of the squadron on the ground." London John Hamilton Hard Cover Good-
287 pp, 8 3/4" H. No date, but 1935 has been pencilled on the title page under the translator's name. Red cloth with gilt lettering on spine and front board. 20 b&w plates (29 b&w photographs) - collated. "On every possible occasion France boasts of being a loving mother to her adopted children - whom she has rescued from hunger and misery to lead along the paths of glory and fame. Court-martials, brutal treatment, heavy sentences for trifling offences, callous doctors, and unspeakable sanitary conditons, all combine to tell a different tale. 'Marche ou creve!' Give your last ounce of strength or break down! 'Honneur, valeur et discipline!' are also embroidered in gold and silver letters on the Legion's banners - at least on those of the original regiments. The word 'discipline' has now acquired such a notorious significance in the Legion that on the standards of newly-formed regiments it is replaced by 'fidelite'. But when the Legion goes on active service the old principle of 'marche ou creve' still holds good. The following chapters will prove the truth of my assertions that 'la grande nation' rewards the superhuman efforts of her legionaries with the basest ingratitude." From the Preface. Previous owner's small name stamp on front pastedown, book is cracked at two places - pages are holding firmly, light to moderate edge wear with wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, slight fading to spine color, various size water marks on boards and spine, splashes of dye from board cloth on fore edge of text block, slight corner bumps.

ISBN 0712620036 "1942: The Mediterranean Operation Stonehenge gets under way - a convoy laden with desperately needed fuel, food and ammunition for the besieged island of Malta sets sail. C aptain Robert Thurston commands the cruiser HMS Marathon, one of the escort vessels, on this Malta run. Thurston is a career officer with a record of conspicuous gallantry under fire, from Jutland to the North Atlantic convoys. But he is al s o a m a n under stress - in the last three years he has seen one ship go to the bottom, leaving pitifully few survivors; he has seen his closest friends and shipmates killed and maimed; he has carried the impossibly heavy burden of responsibilit y fo r h i s me n's welfare in the bloody destruction of war at sea. And soon another cause for concern is added to his worries - Marathon is crippled by enemy action and forced to limp towards Alexandria, a constant target for attack by sea and a ir , v ul ner ab le to the weather and to the enemy alike. Men and machines are stretched to their limit - but the most deadly threat to Thurston's own life and career is yet to be faced. (This) marks the debut of a superb storyteller in A.E. "...uncovers the shocking truth behind Exercise Tiger - a training exercise off the Dorset coast that went horrifyingly wrong. On that tragic night in April, 1944, Allied landing craft were practicing maneuvers along the English shoreline.
