4 Aiken, Conrad. SELECTED POEMS.
New York Charles Scribner's Sons 1929 First, limited edition. Hard Cover Fair Signed by Author
361 pp, 8 1/2" H. Green cloth spine with gilt lettering/decorative banding, patterned paper-covered boards. *Lacking the publisher's slipcase.* No. 3 of 210 copies, numbered and signed by Conrad Aiken on the limitation page. Aiken was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry for 'Selected Poems' in 1930. Inscribed on the front free endpaper: "For Adrianne / on the way to / Hollywood / from / Philip Merivale / March : 1932". Philip Merivale was born in India, began his acting and screenwriting career in England, later moving to Los Angeles. This book is from the library of the actor Raymond Massey and we presume the 'Adrianne' of the dedication was Massey's first wife, Adrianne Allen (m.1929-1939). Ms. Allen is perhaps best known for her role in Noel Coward's 'Private Lives'. Following her divorce from Massey, Ms. Allen married American lawyer, William Dwight Whitney (and Massey married Whitney's ex-wife). In 1957 she joined her daughter, Anna Massey and Philip Merivale's son, John Merivale, in the Broadway production "The Reluctant Debutante", playing Sheila Broadbent, mother of the character played by Anna. Many pages have not been opened and others have rough edges from opening, several edge tears (archivally taped) or pieces missing from margins/corners between pages 329 & 336 - no text missing, age darkening to edges of text block - especially top of text block, moderate to heavy edge wear to boards - more at corners, browning to spine, light browning and some thin brown stains on boards, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, line dent across bottom of text block, small bump at top edge of rear board.

6 Amundsen, Roald. Translated from the Norwegian by A.G. Chater. THE SOUTH POLE: AN ACCOUNT OF THE NORWEGIAN ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION IN THE "FRAM", 1910-1912. (2 VOLUMES IN 1.)
Toronto McClelland and Stewart, Toronto, 1976, facsimile reprint of John Murray, 1912 editions. 1976 0771001304 / 9780771001307 Facsimile Reprint of John Murray 1912 Ed Hard Cover Very Good Good+
393 pp + 449 pp (2 volumes in 1), 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w photographs, maps (1 fold-out), fold-out plan of the 'Fram'. "In the southern spring of 1911 two separate expeditions left their respective winter quarters in Antarctica in a desperate bid to achieve the glory of being first at the South Pole - a British party, led by Captain R.F. Scott, and a Norwegian one under Captain Roald Amundsen. Scott reached the Pole on 18 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegains had forestalled him over a month previously. Disconsolate, Scott and his four companions retraced their footsteps across the polar plateau, a 'via dolorosa' which was to lead to the deaths of all five from hunger and exposure. Scott's edited diary of the events has been a perennial bestseller ever since. Amundsen's own account, translated into English as 'The South Pole', never achieved the same popularity. Lacking in personal charisma, Amundsen was to some extent a victim of British chauvinism, which stereotyped him as a devious foreigner not above gaining the Pole by a deceitful stratagem and, worse by far, sacrificing his dogs to do so. His complaint in later years that British schoolchildren were being taught to regard Scot t as the true discoverer of the South Pole was probably no exaggeration. Today we can look back to these distant events more dispassionately, and freely give Amundsen the credit that is his due. He was a truly professional explorer who took pains to put all his theories to the test and left nothing to chance. 'The South Pole', which so successfully exemplifies Amundsen's philosophy of exploration, is a polar masterpiece which deserves to be in print again after so many years in limbo." Previous owner's name/date on front pastedown, embossed blind stamp on free front endpaper, a few edge creases and tiny tear archivally taped on fold-out map at rear, tiny speck on top of textblock, very light soiling on bottom of textblock, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor edge wear. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, ghost sticker mark on front panel, some darkening to flap-folds and spine edges, very light rubbing/soiling, a few tiny tears at top/bottom of spine, very small scuff mark on front panel.

"Admirers of Don Breckon's unerring blend of a faultless eye for detail and an irresistible nosta lgia for the era of steam will need no prompting to acquire and treasure this beautifully produced book. It is all here: the shapely majesty of the locomotives (with the emphasis on the Great Western, but with all the Big Four well repres e n t e d ) , s e t in landscapes of a 'classical Constable calmness'; the stations, accurate in every evocative period detail; the hidden rituals of the engine shed; the porters, signalmen and passengers who were privileged to play their part in t hi s gl or io us p a no ra ma. The artist himself has provided the commentary, and Roger Malone has written an introduction full of delightful revelations of the life and work of a painter who, he says, 'reminds us of what we are missing in a worl d t ha t h as dis mis sed c har act er and individuality in favour of streamlined efficiency'."
