BRIDGES OF BATTLE: FAMOUS BATTLEFIELD ACTIONS AT BRIDGES AND RIVER CROSSINGS., Featherstone, Donald.
1 Featherstone, Donald. BRIDGES OF BATTLE: FAMOUS BATTLEFIELD ACTIONS AT BRIDGES AND RIVER CROSSINGS.
London Arms and Armour 1998 1854094491 / 9781854094490 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
256 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w plates. "From more than 2,000 years of military history, (the author) has selected some one hundred examples of battles centred on river crossings. They range in size fom small-scale actions such as the battle for Powick Bridge in the early months of the English Civil War to massive, army-scale operations including the final crossing of the Rhine at Remagen during the Second World War. One of the biggest battles during the Napoleonic Wars - indeed, the biggest battle to that date with more than 300,000 men in combat - was fought across the Danube in 1809, culminating in the battle of Wagram. Later, as Napoleon's fortunes began to ebb, there took place the desperate and tragic crossing of the Berezina in 1812 when Napoleon's depleted army, retreating from Moscow, fought to cross the freezing river to escape the pursuing and encirling Russians and the hell of a Russian winter. The American Civil War also provides many examples of battles for river crossings, such as First Bull Run, the opening engagement of the war, the fight for Burnside's Bridge at Antietam and the Battle of the Big Black River during the riverine campaign for Vicksburg. Other, often lesser-known, actions are also to be found in this book, including tales of desperate courage from the Indian Mutiny and other British colonial wars. The range of contributions, including expert analyses and eyewitness accounts often enables the reader to see both sides of the story - those of the defender and the attacker - and to compare battles fought in similar circumstances, but with very different weapons, across the centuries." A few faint scuffs on the front board. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, one small edge tear archivally taped.

4 Laffin, John. RAIDERS: ELITE FORCES ATTACKS.
Chancellor, London, 2000, reprint.
194 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0753703629 B&w photographs, reproductions. "During the Second World War a number of daring military actions were carried out by Allied and Axis land, sea and air forces against targets carefully selected for their strategic or propaganda values. These raids were as individual in character as the men who carried them out and equally unique in their objectives. (The author) relates more than twenty such operations mounted b y B r i t ish, German, American, Australian, Italian and Canadian forces. Raiding appealed to British military men's psyche - and on the whole, they were good at it. Therefore, 'Raiders' emphasizes attacks mounted by the British because they we re i n vo lv ed i n more theatres of war than any other combatant. (Laffin) examines the qualities of successful raiders, as well as their selection and training, before looking in detail at individual missions. The exploits recorded here range fro m a B rit ish co mma ndo strike against Rommel's supposed HQ in the North African desert in 1941, to the daring surveys of the Normandy beaches in preparation for Operation 'Overlord'; from the German glider-borne assault on the great Belgian fort ress of Ebe n Em ael in 1 940, to SS Colonel Otto Skorzeny's dramatic mission to snatch Mussolini from imprisonment on an Italian mountaintop in 1943. Here are the Gironde river exploit of the Special Boat Service in 1942 when frogmen comman dos c aused ser ious damag e to four large enemy ships, and Operation 'Jericho' in 1944 when a low-level attack by RAF Mosquito bombers blasted a huge hole in the wall of a Gestapo prison in France." Faint erased pencil marks on free front end p aper, book c racke d at pages 80/81 - pag es holding firmly. Dust jacket has minor rubbing, very minor wrinkling at top of spine. Very Good/Near Fine

BELGIUM: THE OFFICIAL ACCOUNT OF WHAT HAPPENED, 1939-1940., N/A
5 N/A BELGIUM: THE OFFICIAL ACCOUNT OF WHAT HAPPENED, 1939-1940.
Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs / Evans Brothers, London, n.d.
110 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. 4 b&w illustrations, 5 fold-out maps - collated. "The invasion of Belgium and the Netherlands in May 1940 will remain one of the outstanding events of the second Great War. This volume, issued by the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, sets forth the official record of these events and includes all the important documents relating to them, some of which have not been previously published. Germany tried, as in 1914, to shift the res p o n s i b i lity for her crime on to her victim. The papers here published show, however, that the precautions taken by Belgium against German aggression were fully justified by the information received by the Belgian Government. This informatio n wa s dr am at ic ally confirmed when a German plane which crash-landed on Belgian soil in January 1940 was found to contain the orders for the Luftwaffe's part in a large-scale invasion of Belgium. That documentary evidence is reproduced in these p age s. L ear nin g f rom her past experience, Belgium had been preparing from 1930, and even before, against the menace of a new German aggression. The documents here presented prove that this grave preoccupation never ceased to inspire her po lic y in th e ye ars prec edin g the conflict." Book is slightly cocked, has scattered tiny foxing marks on edges of text block - mainly on top edge, minor rubbing. Dust jacket has two large edge tears - archivally taped, browning to spine and at upp er ed ge, some area s of very light edge wrinkling, a few tiny soiling specks, soft crease down spine. FORTRESS EUROPE., Rolf, Rudi and Saal, Peter.
6 Rolf, Rudi and Saal, Peter. FORTRESS EUROPE.
Shrewsbury Airlife 1988 1853100323 / 9781853100321 First English Edition Soft Cover Very Good
166 pp, 9 5/8" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, maps, plans. "The German capture of the supposedly impregnable Belgian fortress of Eben-Emael in May 1940 shocked the world, while the vaunted Maginot Line proved useless against an enemy who virtually ignored and bypassed it. As always, military planners had designed for the last rather than for the next war, ignoring the advances in tank and aircraft technology which had revolutionised warfare. Even the Germans fell into the same trap, building the Atlantic Wall and the Channel Island defences against invasion from the sea and the West Wall (the so-called 'Siegfried Line') against any possible invasion of Germany itself from the west. As a result, throughout the 1930s and '40s Western Europe was covered by deeply dug-in bunkers, artillery, machine-guns and anti-aircraft emplacements, observation and fire direction towers, underground magazines and other fortifications, a vast number of which survive to this day due either to their inherent strength or the work of preservation enthusiasts. This book explores the history of modern fortifications from the 1870s, showing how designs changed radically to meet new threats, particularly in the form of artillery. It shows how some of the major forts fared in battle in both World Wars, and with the aid of dozens of clear maps and photographs, provides a detailed travel-guide for everyone wishing to explore their frequently well-preserved remains. Most are open to the public and many house museums, so opening times are also included. These defensive lines and positions, fashioned from steel and concrete, have stood idle now for over forty years yet still exercise a tremen-dous pull on the imagination. This book will thus be invaluable not only to students of fortifications but also to anyone touring France, Holland, Belgium, Germany or the Channel Islands." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very minor edge wear, minor rubbing, a few minor creases on front cover.
