4 Broome, Jack, Captain. SERVICES WRENDERED.
London William Kimber 1974 0718303733 / 9780718303730 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
128 pp, 8 1/2" H. Profusely illustrated with cartoons in black, white, blue and red. "Records of World War II are incomplete without a tribute to the 'Fighting Services Title-Abbreviating Department', and the inspired minds therein which christened the Women's Royal Naval Service the WRENS. Surely the dedicated brood - such invaluable handmaidens to Britannia in her wave-ruling activities - owes something to such a delightful title. Captain Jack Broome also feels indebted to the Department for enabling him to call his gay, witty book of illustrated verses about these fledglings 'Services Wrendered'. In their many roles, in dockyards, on parade grounds, driving cars, teleprinters, or motor-boats with such enthusiasm and apparent awe for naval tradition, gold braid and authority, there remained that beautifully balanced, built-in, not-so-subservient subservience." Previous owner's name on free front endpaper and on title page, slight colour fading to top edge of boards and bottom edge of spine, minor wrinkles at top of spine. Dust jacket has slight browning at edges, minor edgewear/rubbing.

5 Carruthers, Janet. THE FOREST IS MY KINGDOM. OXFORD CHILDREN'S LIBRARY NO. 12.
London Oxford University Press 1968 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+ P.A. Jobson.
231 pp, 7 7/8" H. Dust jacket design by William Stobbs. B&w drawings. "Bari, a half-breed boy of the North American Indian country, has two driving passions: his love of the wild animals of his home in Northern Ontario, and his great urge to draw them. In these he is encouraged by Paddy, the friendly trapper who brings him up from the age of nine. But it is only after going unwillingly to school and then learning that success does not come without work and hardship that Bari eventually begins to see ahead of him the life on an artist which he had dreamed about for so long. Miss Carruthers taught for many years in a school for Indians in the Canadian bushland. She is a natural storyteller, and (this book) reflects vividly her profound knowledge and affection for the Indians and the wild life of the country." First published in 1952 and, therefore, a product of its times as regards certain references and viewpoints. Tiny foxing mark on front board, a few tiny dents on bottom edge of boards and text block, three tiny corner bumps. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

"....looks back at some of the mishaps and disasters involving ships that sailed the Great Lakes long ago. Many of these incidents happened during the fierce storms of autumn, others were the result of horrific fires, groundings, collisions or sinkings. Sudden storms proved deadly for some ships, driving them onto shore where helpless onlookers watched or ca tching them in the open lake where they sank without a trace, taking the entire crew to their deaths. Each of the Great Lakes has its own history and particular reputation for danger to shipping. Each of them has shoal areas littered with w r e c k s a nd also holds undiscovered 'graveyards' in deeper waters where ships have gone down. Sport divers and history buffs have located some of these long-lost wrecks, while many remain elusive. A few of the Great Lakes ships noted in this b oo k le ft t h e inland seas to work in saltwater. During the war years many were pressed into service and successfully aided the war effort - some returned, while others became the victims of enemy action or casualties of the elements. Sometim es, to o, th e i nci de nt s described were minor mishaps with no loss of life, but all these stories record the accidents and the challenges that faced the brave men and women who sailed the Great Lakes." 11 MacKenzie, David. Foreword by Pierre Berton. ARTHUR IRWIN: A BIOGRAPHY.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1993 080202632X / 9780802026323 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
323 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "From 1925 to 1950 Arthur Irwin was the driving force behind the success of 'Maclean's Magazine', first as associate editor, then managing editor, and, finally, as editor. He had strong views on what it meant to be Canadian, and under his direction 'Maclean's' was moulded into 'Canada's National Magazine', mirroring the development of Canada as an independent nation in the twentieth century. In the years before the outbreak of the Second World War, he was at the centre of the Maclean company's investigation of defence contracting, or what has become known as the 'Bren Gun Scandal'. In the 1940s Irwin actively sought out writers of talent and potential and gradually added to the magazine's staff many Canadian writers who went on to distinguished careers, including Ralph Allen, Pierre Berton, Blair Fraser, and Scott Young. After leaving 'Maclean's' in 1950, Irwin was appointed film commissioner at the National Film Board, during a time when the board's survival was in doubt because of allegations of espionage and subversion. Irwin was the man called in to deal with the NFB's 'red scare', and, afterwards, he reorganized the board and moved its operations from Ottawa to Montreal. Irwin subsequently went on to a career as a diplomat: he was appointed high commissioner in Australia, and ambassador to Brazil and Mexico. In his last professional position he was publisher of an Victoria newspaper. This book, in describing a man who was profoundly representative of his times, and whose presence in major Canadian institutions was influential, captures the mood of Irwin's period and raises important questions about the roots of present-day Canadian nationalism and cultural identity." One small corner bump. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top of rear flap-fold, minor rubbing.

In late 1944, everywhere in Europe, the Allies were on the offensive, driving the Nazis out of France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and thrusting into Germany itself. Aerial bombardment was a major factor in these successes, forcing the surrender of occupied towns with an economy of lives and time. (This) is history from a bomber pilot's vantage point, as tense periods of action were balanced by episodes of comic relief while on leave. Here is an account of World War II as experienced by a young Canadian pilot with a novelist's eye and ear." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, four tiny dents on front cover. MY FATHER'S SON: MEMORIES OF WAR AND PEACE., Mowat, Farley
15 Mowat, Farley MY FATHER'S SON: MEMORIES OF WAR AND PEACE.
Toronto Key Porter 1992 1550134302 / 9781550134308 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
340 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs, map. "In the summer of 1943, a young Farley Mowat landed on the beaches of Sicily with the First Canadian Infantry division as part of the initial Allied assault on western Europe. For a year and a half his division fought its way up the Italian 'boot' in a series of savage and bloody battles, driving the German army slowly northwards. As (he) saw his comrades killed and wounded in battle, his courage and convictions were constantly tested. His spirit was sustained, in part, by his strong relationship with his parents, especially his father. Angus Mowat, a wounded veteran of the Great War, was only able to re-enlist for home service. His many letters to his son combined idealism and his belief in the power of the written word with an enormous zest for life and instinctive irreverence for authority. 'My Father's Son' begins where Farley Mowat's earlier book about his war experiences, 'And No Birds Sang', ended, recreating the later years of the Italian campaign with its devastating effects on the young men who bore the brunt of it." Book is Near Fine. Dust jacket minor edge wear, minor rubbing, small crease at top of both hinges, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine.

501 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. Inscribed on title page: "For John Watson, / with my very best wishes, / Peter Oliver". "As premier of Ontario from 1923 to 1930, G. Howard Ferguson was the most successful, the most colourful, and perhaps the ablest of Canadian politicians of his time. Largely as a result of his leadership, the Ontario Tories emerged from the debacle of their 1919 defeat to eliminate virtually all political opposition - and launch the Conservative dynasty in Ontario. Peter Oliver's study of Ferguson's life and times provides both a revealing picture of a political professional of driving ambition and rare talent and a commentary on a largely rural society dealing with the challenges of industrialization and urbanization."
