"During the late summer of 1862, Confederate forces launched a three-pronged strategic advance into the North in both major theaters of t he war. The results of this offensive - the only coordinated Confederate attempt to carry the conflict to the enemy - were disastrous. In the eastern theater, Lee was forced out of Maryland after his defeat at Antietam, and in the West, Bra g g w a g e d a dismal campaign and had to retreat from Kentucky. The third prong of the Confederate offensive, the northern Mississippi campaign, culminated in devastating defeats at Iuka and Corinth that ultimately opened the way for Grant's cam pa ig n a ga in st Vicksburg. Peter Cozzens here presents the first book-length study of the battles of Iuka and Corinth...(and) details the tactical aspects of each battle, analyzing troop movements down to the regimental level. In addition to a v ivi d and de tai led battle narrative, Cozzens provides compelling portraits of the campaign's key leaders: Generals Grant, Rosecrans, Van Dorn, and Price. 160 pp, small 4to (10" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1854092383 Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour with photographs, reproductions, maps, drawings, uniform studies. "The English Civil Wars represent the most vital watershed in British history, effectively extinguishing the vestiges of feudalism and originating the concepts of constitutional monarchy and standing army. This history concentrates upon the military aspects (of the three distinct wars of the period). In addition to a detailed and chronological account of the campaigning, and insights into the characters of the military and political leades, the book includes an important section on a subject frequently neglected: on how an army was formed, how its members were recruited (or impressed), how regiments were raised, trained and equipped, how an army was provisioned, marshalled in the field, how its infantry and cavalry were employed, how its artillery was managed, and ultimately how it fought, advance d o r r e treated. In all these matters, as in the chronological account of the war which follows, most extensive use has been made of contemporary drill-books, manuals, accounts by military theorists and practical soldiers, eye-witness accoounts a n d me m oi rs ." Van Nostrand Reinhold, New York, (1980), Ist edition.
143 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photos, drawings, diagrams. "Here is all the information the novice harpsichord maker needs to build an instrument that meets his or her specifications as to compass, scale, and size. Step-by-step, this definitive work clearly spells out the myriad of details essential to creating a harpsichord that encompasses the appropriate range, produces desired sound quality and necessary volume, and is both an object of beauty and easy to play. The thorough description of the structure of the harpsichord and its basic elements gives full attention to the physical properties of strings, the string scale, the number of choirs, calculating string length, and developing a string plan. The keyboard, jacks, soundboard, wrest plank, and harpsichord case are also covered in meticulous detail. The reader will find down-to-earth guidance on every phase of the design process, from a discussion of the drafting instruments and spacing gauges needed to precise explanations for drawing plans for each part of the harpsichord - in the exact order required. You will also discover how to break down the complex construction process into a series of smaller, simpler steps...how to select the optiumum building material for each component of the instrument...how to laminate the bent side...how to achieve proper key touch...how to test mechanisms before installation...Here, too, are the specialized construction tools you need, exact instructions for fitting all the parts together, and numerous illustrations and tables covering such essential details as the properties of music wire, Mersenne's multipliers, fraction and decimal equivalents, and drill and lead hole sizes." Barnes & Noble, New York, 1995.
238 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1566197503 B&w illustrations. "(T)races the background and influences that shaped the character of the German soldier from the time of Frederick the Great to the end of the Second World War. ...Laffin provides an illuminating account of the attitude of the individual soldier to the increasing militarism of the years before the First World War. Included here are extracts from letters written by young German soldiers who, in spite o f t h e mud and carnage, regarded the war as a sacred mission that would bring honor and glory to their country. After Germany's defeat the Treaty of Versailles came as a blow to German pride and helped pave the way to the Second World War. P s yc ho l og y no w played a role in the German soldier's training, and emphasis was given to individual initiative - a concept wholly contrary to the old training that required strict obedience. But such preparation was no match for the Russian wi nt er of 19 42, a nd John Laffin's graphic account of that ill-fated campaign, culminating in the defeat at Stalingrad, pays tribute to German tenacity and resourcefulness."
