256 pp, large 8vo (8 15/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0563369558 B&w photographs. "The British Foreign Office is famous, venerable and misunderstood. While its public face is one of grandeur and formality, its inner workings are shroud ed in mystery. Now, for the first time, the Foreign Office has opened its doors to the BBC; in this book, and the television series which it accompanies, we can find out what life is really like for those who represent the UK abroad or serve m i n i s t ers at home. Among the many issues (the author) considers are what diplomats do and how they do it, why it is a difficult job for a woman, how the Foreign Office compares with the other foreign services, and why Britain seems out on a l im b in E ur op e. She looks at diplomats doing work which ranges from negotiating complicated deals in Brussels to visiting drug traffickers in Bangkok and dealing with death in Delhi. Throughout the book (she) captures the heady excitement that ca n go wit h b ein g a diplomat, but shows too how gruelling can be the demands the life makes on diplomats and their families." SOLO-WARGAMING., Featherstone, Donald.
10 Featherstone, Donald. SOLO-WARGAMING.
New York Frederick Warne 1973 072326063X / 9780723260639 First American Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good-
192 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). 60 b&w illustrations. "Many wargamers, particularly during the early stages of their interest in the hobby, are unable to find live opponents to fight on their table-top battlefields. Their efforts at wearing two different hats, as they manipulate both armies, and with the full knowledge of what each intends to do, soon palls. Their interest in wargaming retreats. Then there are those wargamers whose enthusiasm is so great that fighting one, or even two, battles a week is not sufficient, and who are led to seek a means of carrying on their table-top battles when a live opponent is not available. (This book) caters to both, describing innumerable methods of manoeuvring two wargames armies, under such conditions of secrecy and surprise that the result of the battle is in the balance until the last cannon is fired. It opens many doors to ingenious and practical methods of doing battle with model soldiers, raising the pastime in some sense almost to the level of chess. It enables the 'lonely wargamer' to find pleasure rather than boredom in his solitary state." Contents: Why solo-wargaming?; 'Instant' solo-wargaming; Domestic wargaming; The press-gang; Realism through continuous combat; Concealment in solo-wargaming; Personalized wargaming; Solo-wargaming in the New World; Solo musket wargame (by John Schuster, USA); Solo-wargames campaigns; The matchbox system of solo-wargaming; The importance of War Diaries; Chance cards; Tactical cards; Regimental cards; A small spark of courage; More books for solo-wargamers; Battles by mail; Weather in wargames; Wargaming in bed; A Prince of solo-wargamers; Retasol; Setting up a realistic battlefield; Appendices: Model Soldiers - Sources of Supply; Books and Magazines; Rules for Use in Solo-Wargames; Sources of Inspiration and Instruction for the Solo-Wargamer. Very light browning to edges of textblock. Dust jacket has light browning on inside, on the spine and on flap-folds, very light rubbing, very light edge wrinkling. Very Good+/Very Good-

11 Freeman, John and Dormer, Peter. LONDON REVEALED. THE BEAUTIFUL, BIZARRE AND UNEXPECTED INTERIORS OF THE CAPITAL.
Macdonald, London, 1989, first edition.
240 pp, small 4to (10 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Beautifully and profusely illustrated with colour photographs. ISBN 0356175375 "John Freeman has spent a year investigating the worlds behind the closed doors of the Capital, unearthing an incredible variety of important interiors. The best and most exciting of these have been brought together in this book, revealing ninety unique views of London, many of which have been photographed here for the first time. The result is the mo s t authoritative and well-researched book on the hidden and unappreciated interiors of London, coveirng not only buildings from all periods of history but sites that represent many of the aspects of London life. Five thematic chapters put each in di vi d ual interior into context, making the book not only a stunning visual and descriptive account of the multifarious worlds inside London, but an important survey of London's architecture and design. The chapters include 'The Grand Scale', a s tud y o f the most opulent and grand interiors, with unusual angles on the well-known - such as the Albert Hall and Old Bailey - as well as impressive but less accessible sites such as the Granada Cinema at Tooting. 'Into the Twentieth Century' rev eals the i nnovative decors - successful or otherwise - of recent years; 'The Decorative Tradition' celebrates the richness of period and contemporary detailing in London; 'Moments Preserved' evokes not only nostalgia but wonders at the perfect pr eserv ation or restoration of a period room or moment in time (with a plea therefore for their further protection). 'Private Lives' explores the personal homes that have been transformed in traditional and eclectic styles by their owners, and als o prov ides g limp ses into private habitats, from the hallowed halls of the Reform Club to a Chelsea houseboat and even a 'taxi driver' eatery." This is a heavy volume which will require additional postage. Minor wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has min or wr inkling at top of spine and rear flap-fold, very minor rubbing. ENGLISH COTTAGE GARDENING FOR AMERICAN GARDENERS., Hensel, Margaret. Foreword by Tasha Tudor. Garden plans by Gordon Morrison.
14 Hensel, Margaret. Foreword by Tasha Tudor. Garden plans by Gordon Morrison. ENGLISH COTTAGE GARDENING FOR AMERICAN GARDENERS.
New York W.W. Norton 1992 0393030121 / 9780393030129 Third Printing Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Margaret Hensel, photographs.
239 pp, square small 4to (10 1/4" x 10 1/4"). Profusely illustrated with beautiful color photographs. "Thanks to the extraordinary photographs and gardening wisdom in this classic book, the elegant intimacy of the English cottage garden is a practical possibility for amateur gardeners in diverse regions of the United States. Margaret Hensel, whose photographs and articles on garden design have appeared in 'Horticulture' and many other magazines, has analyzed the aesthetic and horticultural elements of ten representative cottage gardens - eight in England and two in the United States (including Tasha Tudor's at Corgi Cottage in Vermont). Her spectacular photographs render the look and atmosphere of these gardens, while her text focuses on easily grown, readily available plants that are adaptable to a wide variety of climatic and soil conditions. In the back of the book may be found specific horticultural information on a wide variety of cottage garden plants commonly available in the United States, glossaries of Latin and common names, a list of sources for old rose varieties, and a detailed index. The gardens in this beautiful book are not those of the great estates of England, manicured by staffs of professional gardeners. They are, instead, labors of love on the part of individual homeowners, many of whom started with bleak, rubble-strewn lots and went on to create the enchanted settings pictured here. " Slight waviness to edges of text block; a few tiny dints on top & bottom edges of boards, rear edge of spine and on rear board. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling, soft crease down rear panel near hinge, scattered tiny dints at edges and on panels, several light rub marks.

15 Hensley, Joe L. A KILLING IN GOLD.
London Victor Gollancz 1979 0575026200 / 9780575026209 First British Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
181 pp, 8"H. "Coin-collecting can be a dangerous hobby in the United States. One important collector has just been killed in a car crash. His niece, who inherits, takes her uncle's valuable collection to her lawyer, Donald Roback, and Roback, a collector himself, realises they are fakes. So when were the genuine coins switched, and by whom? And was the car crash genuinely an accident? When he asks that last question, Roback also begins to wonder whether other recent 'accidents' to collectors were quite what they seemed: one drowned, though a good swimmer; two burned to death in their home. Roback has another hobby: detection. And now he begins to investigate. There are one or two very nasty customers among the dealers: in particular, one Alvin Andred, whose place of business is a fortress, guarded not only by armoured doors and electronic eyes but also by vicious thugs with guns. But Roback most ingeniously outsmarts him; and Andred plans a horrifying revenge; and the action builds up to a cataclysmic climax. This is a fast-paced and very tense mystery, which challenges Roback's intelligence and endangers his life. As a bonus we learn a lot about the world of the numismatist. And the author is a judge, who draws upon his own legal experience as inspiration for his novels, and for their detail." Minor wrinkling and sun fading at top edge of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, a few very small discolored areas on rear flap.

"Clusters (a great English country house) is being troubled by bats - bats in the belfry, bats around the moat, as Lord and Lady Osprey complain to their luncheon guests, who include Sir John Appleby, sometime Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police and, though now retired, still keenly interested in any puzzling crime. In the matter of the bats he is unhelpful, but soon he faces the challenge of a murder: the murder of Lord Osprey, stabbed with an oriental dagger, and in the library too. The conventions are properly observed. There's an omniscient butler, Bagot. The moat gleams darkly, guarding its secrets. Inspector Ringwood sets up his 'incident room' in the ballroom, which dazzles with mirrors, chandeliers and trompe l'oeil. The house guests include another title, a QC, and two or three experts on numismatics. And that last point takes us to the heart of the mystery: where, in this vast architectural pile, did Lord Osprey conceal his collection of antique coins? There are clues: the key in the library, the skiff on the moat, the intruder glimpsed through the French doors; even, possibly, the local publican's claim that an Osprey has raped his daughter. Appleby solves the problem with all his usual wit, ingenuity and aplomb. And the bats have the last word: very startling so." Previous owner's name in ink on free front endpaper, book is slightly cocked. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, soft crease at top of rear flap.
