SILVER CENTRE (THE STORY OF AN ONTARIO MINING CAMP)., Fancy, Peter.
2 Fancy, Peter. SILVER CENTRE (THE STORY OF AN ONTARIO MINING CAMP).
Cobalt, Ontario Highway Book Shop 1985 0889543062 / 9780889543065 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good Signed by Author
145 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, maps, diagrams. SIGNED BY AUTHOR ON TITLE PAGE. "Silver Centre was one of Canada's celebrated mining camps. It discovered millions of dollars in silver ore (when silver's price averaged 50 cents an ounce) and probably has as much mineral wealth today in its unexamined Keewatin ground for some future economic development. But most importantly, in terms of Ontario's social history , this Silver Centre story represents the way of life for many of the people living in northern Ontario during the early years of (the twenieth) century. The story follows in detail the mining prospectors of 1907 - their silver discoveries; the early mines - their success and failures; the depressing World War I years; then rebirth with the mother lode discovery in 1920 and its climactic decade of phenomenal silver treasure; finally, the inevitable exhaustion of known deposits. Falling metal prices discourage continued searches. Mines close - sudden abandonment. This particular drama of prospectors and developers struggling with the Precambrian rocks is a constant, unifying theme. (This) is the story of a mining community and its people, of fellowship and stubborn pleasure." Very light edge wear, previous owner's name/date in ink on free front endpaper and embossed blind stamp on half-title page. A previous owner has amended the map of Silver Centre, 1924, adding the location of two rinks and a ball park, extending the left side of the map to show the rail yard, railway station and loading ramp, and filling in some squares indicating the location of buildings with red ink. Very light browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has a few small tears (archivally taped) and chips; moderate wrinkling along top edge; light browning - moderate on spine; light soiling and rubbing; small light stain, partial cup mark on front panel; small area of tiny perforations on rear panel; book color offset on inside surface; now in a mylar sleeve.

6 Neff, Terry Ann R. WITHIN THE FAIRY CASTLE: COLLEEN MOORE'S DOLL HOUSE AT THE MUSEUM OF SCIENCE AND INDUSTRY, CHICAGO.
Chicago Museum of Science and Industry 1997 0821225197 / 9780821225196 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good Barbara Karant, photograper.
127 pp, 4to (12 1/8" H). Profusely illustrated with color and b&w photographs. "This renowned doll house, conceived as a fairy castle, is one of the most beloved permanent displays at Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry. A gift to the museum from Colleen Moore, star of the silent-film era and the original 'flapper', the Fairy Castle has appealed to the imaginations of thousands of children since 1949. Moore's dream was to create a castle decorated with fairy-tale themes, miniaturized to the scale of one inch to one foot. She spent hundreds of thousands of dollars and seven years making her dream come true - hiring Hollywood set designers and craftsmen to create the castle's fourteen splendid rooms and exquisite furnishings, and gathering antique miniature treasures from all over the world. The minute and precious detail of this cherished residence of Moore's imaginary fairy prince and princess has been captured in beautiful color photography, giving the reader a close-up tour of the nine-foot-square and twelve-foot-high castle's rooms and their treasures. We enter the miniature palace of make-believe through the Magic Garden, with its working fountain and weeping willow tree that cries 'real tears': travel through the Library of diminutive books, with contributions from F. Scott Fitzgerald, Willa Cather, and others: move on to the Great Hall, with its tiny paintings, dainty chandeliers made of diamonds and emeralds, Cinderella's glss slippers, and more: and explore the castle's wonders from top to bottom. (Includes) an illustrated biography of Colleen Moore's colorful life." Light waviness to edges of text block, tiny dint on bottom edge of rear board , minor rubbing. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing, faint rub line down front panel.

7 Pellerin, Brigitte. DOWN THE ROAD NEVER TRAVELLED.
Breakout Educational Network, Toronto, 2003, first edition.
138 pp, 9" H, soft cover. ISBN 1550024221 "With a unique blend of candour and humour, (this book) chronicles the arduous journey Brigitte Pellerin and her fellow researchers undertook in their attempts to track a tax dollar through one government spending program. Imagine coming home one evening and announcing to your significant other that the only way to truly understand how government worked was to study it from the ground up - to literally look into the sewer lines, leaking water mains, pothole-ridden roads and collapsing bridges of Canadian cities. This was Pellerin's goal when she embarked on an investigation of the Canada Infrastructure Works Program (CIWP), a government initiative that promised to repair the country's crumbling infrastructure and create jobs for Canadians. The task, (she) believed, would be relatively easy: to determine whether the government did what it said it would under this program. How hard could that be? As it turned out, it was nearly impossible." Inside - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - minor rubbing. Near Fine

317 pp, 9 1/2" H. "We are all aware of the power of money - how it influences our moods, compels us to take risks, and serves as the yardstick of success in societies around the world. Yet because we take the daily reality of money so completely for granted, we seldom question how and why it has come to play such a central role in our lives. (The author) casts aside our workaday assumptions about money and takes the reader on a global quest to uncover a deeper understanding of the relationship between money and humankind. More than a mere history of its subject, this riveting book probes the conceptual origins and evolution of money by examining it through the multiple lenses of disciplines as varied as biology, psychology, anthropology, and theology. 'Coined' is not only a profoundly informative discussion of the concept of money, but it is also an endlessly fascinating and entertaining take on the nature of humanity and the inner workings of the mind."
