Melville Henry Cane, 1879-1980, was a graduate of Columbia University and partner in the law firm Ernst, Fox & Cane in New York, where he was legal counsel to Sinclair Lewis, Upton Sinclair, Ayn Rand, William, Saroyan, Thomas Wolfe and others. He was also a poet, producing several volumes of verse, writing "Making a Poem" in 1953 and winning the Robert Frost Medal for lifetime achievement in 1971. The books: 1. January Garden, 1926, 70 pp, 8 1/2" H, black cloth spine with white paper title label/black lettering on spine, black paper covered boards, top edge orange, orange endpapers. Inscribed on title page: "For Tommy Atkins / From his old friend, / Melville Cane 4/1/26". Orange dust jacket with black lettering/decoration. 2. Behind Dark Spaces, 1930, 80 pp, 8 1/2" H, bright blue cloth spine with gilt lettering, yellow paper covered boards, yellow endpapers. Inscribed on dedication page: "To G.C. Atkins (George Chew "Tommy" Atkins), a fellow Columbia graduate and lawyer who moved to a farm in Ontario, Canada in 1921. 1. Full sheet, holograph, signed "Melville", dated March 31/26. References the "sporty" proposition of exchanging Cane's first book of verse for some of Tommy's apples, commenting on Tommy's giving up of "this unproductive law activity and grow(ing) something worthwhile." In response to an invitation to visit Ontario, Cane says that he happens "to be the only person in America out of jail who hasn't a car." 2. Half sheet, holograph, signed "Melville", dated April 7/26. References the arrival of the apples and the finding of three with soft spots, but continuing "if you find only three poems with soft spots, it'll be a stand-off." 3. Full sheet, typed, signed "Melville Cane", dated April 20th, 1926. Comments favorably on Tommy's idea of raising turkeys, but "do not expect epics from me in exchange." Mentions he has conveyed Tommy's greetings to Harcourt and Brace (Cane was on their board of directors). 4. Full sheet, holograph, signed "Melville", dated 3/9/33. Comments on the university's (Columbia's), and the general, lack of appreciation for poets and mentioning that he is sending "a couple of specimens (of poetry) of different moods." (see below). 5. Half sheet, holograph, signed "Melville', dated 6/25/51. Mentioning the death of a mutual acquaintance and hoping Tommy will visit. The first two pieces in this group have pencil notations at the bottom, probably by Tommy. WITH: a group of four poems. Three are typed on full sheets of paper, each with one correction in pen and one with a pencil quotation from a poem by John Erskine (a mutual friend). "Melville Cane" is typed at the bottom of each of these sheets, but they are NOT signed. The three poems ("Hymn to Night", "Petition" and "Ancient Organ Grinder") were later published in "A Wider Arc". "Hymn to Night" and "Ancient Organ Grider" were included with Cane's letter to Tommy of 3/9/33. The fourth poem, on a 3 1/4" square scrap of paper, is handwritten in ink, with crossings out and smears and refers to honeybees - it was tucked into "Behind Dark Spaces", at the dedication page, where Cane gives Tommy directions on where to send his honey. WITH: Three items relating to Bernard M.L. Ernst, Cane's long-time friend, fellow Columbia graduate and partner in the law firm of Ernst, Fox & Cane. Ernst was also president of the New York Branch of the Society American Magicians and Vice President of the Magicians' Club of London. 1. "an address / by Melville H. Cane / delivered at the funeral of / Bernard M.L. Ernst / at Earl Hall, Columbia / University, November 30, / 1938" - [8] pp (not including covers), stapled, 7 3/4" H. 2. Holograph note in envelope from Roberta Ernst to Mr. Atkins, thanking him for his "kind note' and commenting on Ernst's last days. 3. Typed slip of paper (approx. 2 5/8" H x 8 7/16" W) with a quote from "Quicker Than the Eye" by John Mulholland, mentioning Ernst as "One of the best loved men in magic". 1. 252 pp, 13 1/2" H. Brown cloth with gilt lettering on spine, pictorial endpapers. In publisher's original plain cardboard slipcase. B&w and colour reproductions. "(A) stunning exhibition of the city's mag-nificent art treasures. Compiled by the directors of Prague's National Museum and National Gallery, this important and eye-filling work is a rich cornucopia which art historians, students of central Europe, and travelers to the historic city may sample with profit and pleasure. Itself an art treasure with its ancient buildings, historic monuments, and panoramic views, 'the city of a hundred towers' is home to notable collections of paintings, drawings, sculpture, and objects d'art dating from Charles IV and even earlier. Reflecting Prague's position at the heart of Europe along centuries-old trade routes, these collections encompass the continent's many schools of art, architecture, and handicrafts and repre-sent a distillation of Prague's turbulent thousand-year history. Modern scholarship, including some extraordinary scholarly detective work on the Prague Castle Gallery collection, has uncovered, restored, and made available to experts and public alike many little-known treasures. Equally impressive are collections of early art, coins, astronomical instruments, and Bohemian and modern Czechoslovak glass and porcelain. History of church and state can be glimpsed in the art of stone-cutters, goldsmith and silversmiths, weavers and embroiderers, and masters of illuminated manu-scripts." Contents: Introduction; National Museum; National Gallery; Museum of Decorative Arts; Museum of the City of Prague; Treasury of St. Vitus' Cathedral; Prague Castle Gallery; State Jewish Museum; Military Museum; Illuminated Manuscripts in Prague Libraries. 214 pp, 9 3/4" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "Mummies, dinosaurs, Persian textiles, exotic fishes, European bronzes, fossils, early Canadian furniture, artifacts of the Native peoples of Canada, rare Chinese ceramics, and a Ming tomb with its guardian figures - all these and much more are to be found in the galleries of the Royal Ontario Museum. (This book) gives a vivid account of the origins and growth of this impressive institution, which each year touches the lives of hundreds of thousands, from researchers to school classes thronging the galleries, to senior citizens involved in special programs. (The author) uses a biographical framework for the story of this exciting institution. First on the scene are the founders, such memorable figures as Sir Edmund Walker and Charles Trick Currelly. Then come the early directors, curators, and technicians, whose research and discoveries in every branch of the natural sciences and art and archaeology contributed to the Royal Ontario Museum's growing international reputation. In the aftermath of World War II a new generation of museum men and women took up the challenge of keeping the Royal Ontario Musuem one of the last combined science and art and archaeology musuems of first rank in the world. The unfolding story, with accomplishements, stresses, and strains interwoven, is captivating." One tiny corner bump, tiny bump at top/bottom of spine, tiny dent on front board. Arthur Baker, London, (1976).

The gentle lover his wife knew; the fearless and often unorthodox army leader; the astute polititician who tangled with the directors of the East India Company; and the generous, dutiful son who so frequently came to the aid of his economically inept father. In his excellent biography, Richard Garrett considers all of them. He traces Clive's spectacular career from its early days on the battlefields to the years of power, when he could enthrone or depose an Indian prince according to the needs of the moment. The author describes such battles as Plassey and the siege of Arcot, and he deals with the tragic climax at the end of Cl ive's ca reer when Parliament very nearly brought about his ruin..." 3" sq. area of very light browning on free front endpaper - probably caused by previous owners bookplate. HANCOCK., Hancock, Freddie and Nathan, David.
19 Hancock, Freddie and Nathan, David. HANCOCK.
Kimber, London, 1969.
191 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs. "(Tony Hancock) led a life fragmented by laughter and despair as he ceaselessly sought an unattainable truth in comedy until it ended in a dreary room in Australia with one final drink, one last handful of pills. But before that happened he created more laughter for more people than any other man of his generation. The search for the truth about this extraordinarily complex clown involves drawing on the memories and perceptions of writers like Alan Simpson and Ray Galton, who, in a sense, hewed the Half Hour Hancock out of the whole man, J.B. Priestley who put him, thinly disguised, into a novel, Phillip Oakes, who wrote him a screenplay, and Denis Norden who w rote material he convulsed audiences with for years. There are, too, the writer/performers like John Osborne, Spike Milligan and Eric Sykes, the comedians who knew him or worked with him like Harry Secombe, Joan Turner, Kenneth Williams and Grah a m Stark; showman Bernard Delfont; actress Sylvia Syms, his radio and television directors Dennis Main Wilson and Duncan Wood and scores of others of lesser fame but crucial importance in Hancock's life." Slight fading at top edge of spine, light w ri n kling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wear/wrinkling, a few very small closed tears, minor rubbing, slight fading to spine color. Very Good/Very Good
