London Viking 2012 0670917559 / 9780670917556 Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
466 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, floor plans, map, family tree. "At 6 a.m. on 21 April 1940 John, the 9th Duke of Rutland, and one of Britain's wealthiest men, ended his days, virtually alone, lying on a makeshift bed in a dank, cramped suite of rooms in the servants' quarters of his own home, Belvoir Castle. For weeks, as his health deteriorated, his family, his servants - even the King's doctor - had pleaded with him to come out, but he had refused. After his death, his son and heir, Charles, the 10th Duke of Rutland, ordered that the rooms be locked up and they remained untouched for sixty years. What lay behind this extraordinary set of circumstances? (The author) unravels a complex and compelling tale of love, honour and betrayal, played out in the grand salons of Britain's stately homes at the turn of the twentieth century, and on the battlefields of the Western Front." 384 pp, 9 1/4" H. "The lives of two dazzling aristocratic sisters, Lucy and Dorothy Percy, present a perfect window into the world of political unrest and social intrigue of seventeenth-century English society. Their breeding, beauty, and cunning made them among the most influential women of their time. Born during the reign of Elizabeth I, the Percy sisters came to prominence at the court of Charles I. Lucy, the Countess of Carlisle - the 'court lady' - dominated the royal scene thanks to her position at the center of power. Her beauty, captured in magnificent Van Dyck portraits, and her political skill attracted prominent lovers, and her charm and talents as a gossip ensured her inclusion in the Queen's inner circle. Then, her machinations during the Civil WAr led to her imprisonment in the Tower of London. Her sister, Dorothy, Countess of Leicester - the 'country wife' - had twelve surviving children and managed the family estates while her husband traveled abroad or immersed himself in books. As a diplomat's wife, she was brilliant, with a keen eye and special purview of European politics. This early ancestor of Princess Diana's family was also a shrewish wife who bossed her mate for more than thirty-seven years before he rebelled publicly, causing a scandal. (This book) brilliantly depicts the position of upper-class women in seventeenth-century Britain and illuminates a grand and turbulent era." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has some very light edge wrinkling.

Collins, London, 1967.
153 pp, 7 3/8" H, hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations. "Enid Blyton did not mean to write this book. There were already four books in this Mystery Series, all about Roger, Diana, Snubby and his mad little spaniel - four books in which th e circus boy, Barney, was seeking his unknown father. In 'The Rubadub Mystery' he found him - and that was to be the end of the series. But the lovers of these 'Barney Books' begged so hard for yet another, that there was nothing for it b u t t o w r i te a fifth. So here it is, sure of a tremendous welcome, for here are all the well-loved characters again - with Loony the spaniel and Miranda the monkey, madder and more comical than ever! A winter holiday down at Rat-at-Tat Hou se , in th e s no w- cl ad hills, cut off from everywhere - and mystery and adventure spring up out of the snow! Who came knocking at night! Whose were the mysterious footprints in the snow? What was the wandering Snowman? What was hidden in th e c el lar ? T hi s is ind eed a very strange mystery - an Enid Blyton Mystery which, as ever, will hold your attention from the first word to the last." Collins, London, 1961.
256 pp, 7 3/8" H, hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations. "....the second of a wonderful mystery series....We meet the same characters as in 'The Rockingdown Mystery'....Roger and Diana, and Snubby, with his amusing dog, Loony; Barney, with his comical monkey, Miranda. In this book there is a strange mystery: the theft of papers from rooms whose doors and windows are locked. How are these robberies committed, and who is the thief? Somehow the mystery centres itself on Rilloby Fair, and so, of course, Enid Blyton brings a whole Fair to life, with its queer and interesting characters. Vosta and his chimpanzees, Young-Un and Billy Tell of the shooting-range, Old Ma, the roundabout boy, the loud-voiced Tonnerre and his elephants, and many others." Pages browned, small light brown stain in top margin of pages 39 to 42, browning and small foxing marks to edges of textblock, large bump to bottom corner of rear board, slight bump to bottom corner of front board and b o t t o m e d g e of front board at hinge, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. THE FRAGRANCE OF SWEET-GRASS: L.M. MONTGOMERY'S HEROINES AND THE PURSUIT OF ROMANCE., Epperly, Elizabeth Rollins. (Lucy Maud Montgomery. L.M.)
8 Epperly, Elizabeth Rollins. (Lucy Maud Montgomery. L.M.) THE FRAGRANCE OF SWEET-GRASS: L.M. MONTGOMERY'S HEROINES AND THE PURSUIT OF ROMANCE.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1993 0802074618 / 9780802074614 First Paperback Edition. Soft Cover Very Good+
275 pp, 8vo (9" H). "Anne Shirley is the best known of a memorable group of heroines created by Lucy Maud Montgomery, a group that includes Emily Byrd Starr, Valancy Stirling, and Pat Gardiner. These characters are at the centre of Epperly's book, the first full-length critical study of all L.M. Montgomery's fiction. Epperly contends that Montgomery was a master of the romance genre, and through her use of literary allusions, repetitions, irony, and comic inversions she deftly manipulated the normal conventions of romance novels. By studying the fictional biographies of the heroines and their pursuit of romance, Epperly question the ways romance shapes what we consider valuable in our imaginings and experience. A book written for L.M. Montgomery fans and scholars." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very minor edge wear, clean and bright.

9 Fisher, Margery. WHO'S WHO IN CHILDREN'S BOOKS: A TREASURY OF THE FAMILIAR CHARACTERS OF CHILDHOOD.
New York Holt, Rinehart and Winston 1975 0030150914 / 9780030150913 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Various.
399 pp, 10" H. Pictorial endpapers, profusely illustrated throughout with b&w drawings and colour plates. "Who does not have vivid memories of characters from the books of childhood? Alice in Wonderland, Brer Rabbit, Dr Dolittle, Paddington Bear, the Railway Children, Winnie the Pooh, Tom Sawyer - the list is endless. Many names are so familiar - favourites from generation to generation - that they need no repeating; others are half forgotten; some may be almost unknown. This book is for everyone who wishes to recapture those memories and to find fresh inspiration for reading. It is a personal collection of characters from the world of children's fiction, by an author widely known and respected for her extensive knowledge on the subject. Entries include not only human characters but humanized or personalized animals, toys and vehicles, fairy and folk tale characters. The distinctive qualities of each are evoked in the writing - their appearance, mannerisms, speech, details of background, their role within the story - so that the reader recaptures or is introduced to the essential personality of the character concerned. From Margery Fisher's pertinent critical comments one is given an indication of the quality and status of the book in question. Approximately 400 illustrations accompany the text, showing not only the well-known representations of the characters, but title pages, authors' photographs, and scenes from film treatments. This is an invaluable treasury in which to look up characters from children's books, trace where they appeared, find their authors and first publication dates. It will inspire enthusiasm to read books not previously known and can be read by anyone for pure enjoyment." Minor edge wear, minor wrinkling at top of spine, previous owner's name and date on half-title page. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling, tiny dent on spine.

MARGARET - A WOMAN OF CONFLICT., James, Paul.
11 James, Paul. MARGARET - A WOMAN OF CONFLICT.
Sidgwick & Jackson, London, 1990, first edition.
202 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0283999047 B&w photographs. "Upon becoming the first memeber of the royal family to appear on 'Desert Island Discs', Princess Margaret told broadcaster Roy Plomley that she had be 'mi sreported and misrepresented since the age of seventeen'. Despite the fact that both her public and private life is frequently reported with relish and often distorted by the tabloid press, we know surprisingly little about the Queen's only s i s t e r , who has so often been regarded as the black sheep of the royal circle. To coincide with Princess Margaret's sixtieth birthday, expert royal commentator Paul James has written a thoroughgoing and impartial biographical study of the c o nt ro ve rs ia l Pr incess. He illustrates her struggles between personal desire and public duty, the opposition she faced in her relationship with Peter Townsend, the pressures of marriage to a non-royal which led to divorce, and the love-hate re lat ion shi p w hic h she has formed with the media, together with her fight for her individuality within the confines of the royal family. (This book) will provide the reader with a compelling insight into the public and private worlds of one o f t he s tron gest and mos t colo urful characters in the royal family, looking back over a life which has contained more than its fair share of conflict and turmoil." 297 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0297813250 B&w photographs. "....both a love story and an account of what one art expert has called 'the worst scandal that's happened to a country house in the last hundred years'. T he eighth Earl Spencer - Johnnie to his friends - was the Princess of Wales's father; Raine, formerly Lady Lewisham and Lady Dartmouth, and daughter of the novelist Barbara Cartland, his second wife. When he suffered a massive stroke in 197 8 , s h e f ought for his life though few gave him much chance of surviving. They doted on each other and when he guided his daughter up the aisle of St Paul's on the day of her wedding to Prince Charles, she was rightly given the credit for him be in g t he re . But as chatelaine of the Spencers' magnificent stately home, Althorp in Northamptonshire, her record was far more controversial. A substantial quantity of the family's irreplaceable heirlooms was disposed of in circumstances tha t l ed to bi tte r c ri t icism from experts and members of the family. Angela Levin has written the first biography of Raine and Johnnie Spencer, in the course of which she has interviewed more than a hundred relatives, friends, colleagues, emplo yees an d a rt h isto rian s. T he result is revealing and enthralling study of an extraordinary relationship and the most detailed account yet of what happened to the Althorp inheritance." " 'It seems that our generation at Balliol is doomed', Patrick Shaw Stewart wrote to Lady Desborough from Gallipoli. 'If I live throug h this war I shall be almost without friends'. He was in fact the last to die of the close-knit, brilliantly clever and engagingly vivacious group that included Raymond Asquith, Julian and Billy Grenfell, Edward Horner, Charles Lister, Ego a n d Y v o Charteris. Children of the Souls, the bright collection of late Victorian aristocrats, these young men were brought up together at Eton and Oxford; with such friends as Winston Churchill, Edward Marsh, Duff Cooper, John Buchan, Diana Co op er an d Ru p ert Brooke, they were becoming part of the Edwardian elite, moving from one fashionable ball or country house party to the next, meeting politicians and poets and beginning careers in the City, in the law and public service. In thi s m ovi n g g ro up po rtrait, which is based on many unpublished letters, both to and about each other, Jeanne MacKenzie tells of a happy youth and blighted manhood which epitomises the epic tragedy of the twentieth century. 192 pp, small 4to (10 1/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0584110715 Profusely illustrated in colour and b&w with photographs, drawings, reproductions. "(T)akes us behind the royal image - behind the panoply of royal fashion. With rare know ledge and informed wit Colin McDowell explains how the requirements of protocol and public relations combine to define the boundaries of royal style - not only in terms of clothes but also performance on state occasions and overseas travel and, i n d e ed, at all the crucial moments of the Royal Year. His own outstanding drawings, as well as a marvellous selection of photographs, illustrate and enlarge on the story. Colin McDowell's meticulous research, and his privileged access to designe rs , su ppliers and other sources closely involved in the creation and maintenance of royal style bring a very special authority to this fascinating and detailed survey. (It) concentrates on the style of four Queens, each of whom has or had a disti nct a nd individual style that epitomized the monarchy of her day. Two other ladies of remarkable style are added to complete the picture: one, Wallis Simpson, who became Duchess of Windsor, and who might have been Queen....but who, it can be argu ed, was un suitable exactly because of her style; and another, who all trust in due course will be Queen: Princess Diana, whose own style so happily does so much to glamorize and popularize the monarchy of today."
