"The year is 1942. A small group of merchant ships escorted by two old destroyers, a corvette and two trawlers are ploughing through Arctic seas to northern Russia in the wake of the ill-fated convoy PQ17. For Ordinary Signalman Ludd - inevitably dubbed 'Lobby' - it is his first trip and li k e l y t o be a tough one. The convoy must run the gauntlet of U-boats, aircraft - there is even the threat that enemy battleships will put to sea; finally there is the other enemy - the bitterest weather, the cruelest seas in the world...Seen f ro m th e p er sp ectives of both wardroom and lower deck, (although a work of fiction, this book) gives an entirely authentic account of the experience of sailors on Arctic convoys during World War II. From the final shore leave in Liverpool to th e a rr iva l at an in hospitable Russian port, through tragedy and much suffering, the men in the cramped messdecks maintain their unflagging humour to the end. 12 Easton, Alan. Foreword by Rear-Admiral K.L. Dyer. 50 NORTH: AN ATLANTIC BATTLEGROUND. (CANADA'S ATLANTIC BATTLEGROUND.)
Toronto Ryerson Press 1963 First Edition. Hard Cover Very Good Fair Inscribed By Author
287 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H). Inscribed on front free endpaper: "Archie Whelan / This describes a very different / environment in which you / & I worked together, but I / hope you'll like reading about it. / Your old friend / Alan Easton. / March 1963." B&w illustrations. "In this exciting book, Lieutenant-Commander Alan Easton of the Royal Canadian Navy Reserve tells of his experiences during the Second World War. The first ship he commanded was a corvette with faulty engines. His second corvette saw convoy action and battled both German U-boats and bad weather. Then Easton was given command of a destroyer which saw action in the English Channel on the day of the Normandy invasion. Easton gives a thrilling and detailed account of this successful naval engagement. But '50 North' is as much concerned with everyday life on board small warships as it is with the Atlantic battle as a whole. For this reason (it) is the first Canadian book of its kind. Easton is able to portray with vividness the seamen under him, their minor quarrels as well as the more important problems which occasionally develop between the crew and the commanding officers." Very light browning to edges of text block, small bump to top of front hinge, minor erinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has old tape repairs for large and small tears with creases, a few small edge chips, light browning, rubbing and soiling - mainly on rear panel, now protected in a mylar sleeve.

Hodder and Stoughton, London, 1979, first edition.

It is the summer of 1917, Britain is losing the war against the U-boats and Commander David Cochrane Smith listens to the delirious mumbling of a dying U-baot c ommander: 'Swordbearer'. Smith believes it is the code name for an operation, a threat to Britain, but nobody will listen to him. The threat haunts him. He meets a wild, beautiful, tragic girl and she solves a tiny part of the mystery, en o u g h t o set a clock ticking, counting down. Smith has come home with a bloody victory to his credit but he is still under suspicion of being reckless, a wild man, at best just lucky. He believes the answer to the U-boat lies in convoys but h e is g iv e n a f lotilla 'to take offensive action against U-boats and bases'. The flotilla turns out to be one ancient destroyer, a turtle-back 'thirty-knotter' known as 'Bloody Mary'. It is backed up by a 'ship of force', but that is no more t ha n a mo nit or , ne ar -new and with fifteen-inch guns. Her engines are defective, she is slow and spends more time in the dockyard than at sea. The flotilla is a sick joke; the two ships are the lepers of the Dover Patrol. With them Smith has to take on shor e b at ter ies and bigger, faster enemy destroyers. He has to fight the hostility of his commanding officer and is plunged into the world of espionage behind the enemy lines. Through it all the mystery behind 'Schwerttrager' lure s h im on unt il he sta kes his car eer and his life in a desperate attempt to solve it." Faint cigarette odor. 20 Gough, Barry M. HMCS HAIDA: BATTLE ENSIGN FLYING.
St Catharines, Ontario Vanwell 2001 1551250586 / 9781551250588 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Near Fine Grant Macdonald.
255 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H). B&w photographs, reproductions of artwork by Grant Macdonald and others, maps/battle plans, colour plates. " 'HMCS Haida's story is an account of sharp-end war; of Canada's naval experience in Murmansk convoys and British Home Fleet protection; in English Channel operations, when Canadian and British naval units swept the German naval ensign from the seas; in the destruction of a U-boat, and in the liberation of Trondheim, Norway. Haida was always in on the action. She sank more enemy military tonnage than any other Canadian vessel. Haida's finest days were during the intense naval operations leading up to D-Day, when, with her sisters Huron and Iroquois and the ill-fated Athabaskan, with British and Polish men of war, she engaged German destroyers, torpedo boats, minesweepers and others - and never lost. She vigorously carried the war to the enemy at great risk. Her postwar career including two tours in the Korean theatre displays the same brave purpose in her officers and men, trained professionals and dedicated sailors. Barry Gough has written a new chapter in Canadian naval annals, showing that the best equipment brings forth the best results when good fortune and superb seamanship and weapons handling are matched in equal measure - Haida's illustrious story." Very minor edge wear at bottom of flap-folds, minor rubbing.
