2 Bartlett, C.P.O., Squadron Leader. Edited by his son, Nick Bartlett. IN THE TEETH OF THE WIND: THE STORY OF A NAVAL PILOT ON THE WESTERN FRONT, 1916-1918.
Leo Cooper, London, 1994, revised edition.
159 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0850523184 B&w photographs, diagram, map. "Philip Bartlett's account is a unique and fascinating record of a pilot's life in the dawn of aerial warfare and, as a history, of the first use of the bomber in war, strangely, by the Navy's aircraft. Flying by day and night alone, without navigational aids, the author moves from attacks on the U-boat bases to bombing the German Gothas as they prepared to raid London, and then to the s upport of Haig's drive to the coast which ended in the mud of Passchendaele. The climax in March, 1918, is reached when the author's squadron finds itself directly in the path of Ludendorff's massive thrust, which broke the British Vth Ar m y a n d n e a rly decided the War. Attacked by Richthofen's aces, No 5 Squadron RNAS flew continuous desperate missions against the advancing troops from aerodromes which were over-run time after time. At a time when the life of a pilot was re ck on e d in w e ek s, t he author flew 101 missions, enduring the rigours of flying without heat or oxygen, with hesitant engines, no parachutes and the attention of German fighters. Yet there is continual evidence of the pure joy of flying and won der a t the sh ee r b eau ty of the sky." Light browning to top edge of textblock, slight waviness to top/bottom edges of textblock. 247 pp, 9 1/4" H. "In 1921, a 'little band' of disparate activists formed the Communist Party of Canada. Civil authorities across the country reacted with fear, even though R.C.M.P. officers described the party as 'a handful of ineffective English-speaking leaders, a negligible French-speaking element, an isolated Jewish element, with the agitators drawn from the Finnish and Ukrainian immigrants, whose benevolent societies paid for the Party's maintenance'. (This book) documents the ensuing clashes between the Canadian communists and Canada's political and legal establishments, from 1928 to 1932. Dr. Betcherman skillfully recreates the excitement of street fights and court cases, culminating in the spectacular trial of communist Tim Buck. (She) interviewed Communist Party members, Crown attorneys and Defence lawyers of the period, and was granted access to rare transcripts of trials, appeals and correspondence in compiling this, the first detailed and thoroughly entertaining history of these events." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, three very small corner bumps. Dust hacket has very light edge wear and wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, tiny dent on rear hinge, tiny scuffs on rear flap-fold.

The first seven books of the Vlad Taltos Series, plus volume nine (8 books in total), 6 7/8" H. **Please note, volume 8 - Dragon - is not included in this grouping.** 1. Jhereg - 239 pp, Ace 1983 16th printing, ISBN 0441385540. "There are many ways for a young man with quick wits and a quick sword to advance in the world. Vlad Taltos chose the route of the assassin. To his other qualifications he added two things: The first was a smattering of witchcraft - badly thought of on Dragaera, but only a fool refuses such a weapon. The second was his constant companion, a young jhereg, its leathery wings and poisonous teeth always at Vlad's command, its alien mind psionically linked with his own. Vlad has never regretted the sorcerous bargain he made with his jhereg's mother: 'I offer your egg long life and fresh, red meat without struggle, and I offer it my friendship. I ask for aid in my endeavors. I ask for its wisdom, and I ask for its friendship'." 2. Yendi - 209 pp, Ace 1984 1st printing, ISBN 0441944566. "Back when I bargained for the wise-mouthed reptilian who sits perched on my shoulder, his mother wished me: 'Long life and good hunting'. I told her I was not a hunter. She said: 'You will be - .' She was right. My name is Vlad Taltos. I am an assassin. And this is the story of my early days in the House of Jhereg, of how I found myself in a Jhereg war, and how I fell in love with the woman who killed me." 3. Teckla - 214 pp, Ace 1987 Ist printing, ISBN 0441799779. "I'd always known they were. Teckla were lazy, stupid, cowardly peasants. Revolting. Old joke. But now they were revolting against the Empire. New joke. And a Jhereg crimelord, feeling the pinch, was popping the rebels. No joke. But the real joke? I was protecting them. Me. Lord Vlad Taltos - loyal grandson, loving husband. Jhereg. Sorcerer. Assassin. Everything the rabble hated. Not that I craved wet-nursing a mob of slogan-slobbering, doomed radical loonies, all of whom wanted me dead. Particularly since my royal peers, all of House Jhereg, also wanted me dead." 4. Taltos - 181 pp, Ace 1988 1st printing, ISBN 0441182003. "Journey to the Land of the Dead. All Expenses Paid! Not my idea of an ideal vacation, but this was work. After all, even an assassin has to earn a living. The trouble is, everyone knows that a living human cannot walk the Paths of the Dead, and return, alive, to the land of men. But being an Eastener is not exactly like being human, by Dragaeran standards anyways. Thus, the rule doesn't apply to me - I hope." 5. Phoenix - 245 pp, Ace 1990 1st printing, ISBN 0441662250. "In Gods we trust. All other pay cash. Always a good rule if you're in my line of work, but who'd think a god would take me up on it? There I was, facing certain death, when the Demon Goddess answered my prayers for rescue. Strange she should take an interest in me, considering I'm an assassin. Stranger that the Demon Goddess needs to offer me work. Well, my patron deity wants a favor, and who is Vlad Taltos to say no." 6. Athyra - 243 pp, Ace 1993 1st printing, ISBN 0441033423. "The Magnificent Seven - ? A bit of an overstatement. Minus six, actually. Which leaves one. Me - Vlad Taltos, sorcerer (sometime witch) and (ex-)assassin. Plus my two faithful jhereg. Which makes three, sort of. But even we can have a hard time when we take on the biggest hitters of the House of Jhereg. Here I thought I could retire in peace - ." 7. Orca - 290 pp, Ace 1996 1st printing, ISBN 0441001963. "Granted, walking around with two jhereg on your shoulders is not the best disguise for an ex-assassin wanted all over the Empire. But a young boy saved my life and now he needs my help. And Vlad Taltos always pays his debts. Even if it means uncovering a financial scandal big enough to bring down the House of Orca - and, if I'm lucky, the entire Empire." 9. Issola - 255 pp, TOR 2002 1st printing, ISBN 0812589173. "Okay, so maybe I've been living in the woods too long, where you can't even get a decent cup of klava first thing in the morning. So who should turn up but Lady Teldra, the courtly servant of my old friend the Dragonlord Morrolan? Teldra wants my help, because Morrolan and Aliera have disappeared, and according to Sethra Lavode, it looks like they may be in the hand of the Jenoine. Do I want to mess with them? The guys who made this place? And I thought I had problems before - . Oh, well, what's a little cosmic battle with beings who control time and space?" Interiors - two books with light to mderate browning on insideof covers, light toning to light browning to most pages, otherwise clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Terrail, Paris, 1995.
223 pp, 4to (11 13/16" H), soft cover with self-flaps. ISBN 287939080X 164 colour reproductions. "Gauguin, the leading figure of the Pont-Even group, inspired the Nabis through his influence on the young painter Paul Serusier. In the Breton vill age where they spent the summer of 1888, Serusier, under Gauguin's direction, painted a landscape in pure colours that verged on the abstract. When they returned to Paris and showed the picture to their friends, Maurice Denis, Vallotton, Vuilla r d a nd Bonnard, the effect was so magical that it became known as 'The Talisman'. The painting was at odds with the academic teaching of the time and they saw it as a veritable revelation; hence the name 'Nabis' from 'Nebiim', Hebrew for prophet . ( T hi s book) traces the genesis of this revelation in the context of a survey of the intellectual and artistic climate in Paris at the turn of the century, a period that also embraced Symbolism, Japonism, and the originality of a group of artis ts wh os e c ommon characteristic was the will to apply the modernist ideal in every art form, including poster design, theatre programmes and stage sets." HANCOCK., Hancock, Freddie and Nathan, David.
9 Hancock, Freddie and Nathan, David. HANCOCK.
Kimber, London, 1969.
191 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs. "(Tony Hancock) led a life fragmented by laughter and despair as he ceaselessly sought an unattainable truth in comedy until it ended in a dreary room in Australia with one final drink, one last handful of pills. But before that happened he created more laughter for more people than any other man of his generation. The search for the truth about this extraordinarily complex clown involves drawing on the memories and perceptions of writers like Alan Simpson and Ray Galton, who, in a sense, hewed the Half Hour Hancock out of the whole man, J.B. Priestley who put him, thinly disguised, into a novel, Phillip Oakes, who wrote him a screenplay, and Denis Norden who w rote material he convulsed audiences with for years. There are, too, the writer/performers like John Osborne, Spike Milligan and Eric Sykes, the comedians who knew him or worked with him like Harry Secombe, Joan Turner, Kenneth Williams and Grah a m Stark; showman Bernard Delfont; actress Sylvia Syms, his radio and television directors Dennis Main Wilson and Duncan Wood and scores of others of lesser fame but crucial importance in Hancock's life." 668 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "The OPP came into existence (in 1909) with a total strength of fifty-one men, of whom forty-four were constables deployed across the vast province. By the end of World War I in 1918, only twenty-six constables were still serving with the force, but returning veterans were sought for enlistment with the provincials and the force grew, assuming every-increasing responsibilities for policing the province. Liquor law enforcement during the rumrunning days of the 1920s, and the creation of a highway patrol in 1930 played major parts in the evolution of the provincial police. The story of the OPP includes tales of murder, sabotage, corruption, and political influences. There were relief expeditions to the north in the wake of devastating forest fires, and confrontations with hoboes, harvesters, and loafers. Violent crimes, jail-breaks, war services, and industrial disputes all had to be contended with, and not a few members of the provincial police were killed in the performance of their duties over the years. 'Hepburn's Private Army' and 'Drew's Gestapo' gave rise to much criticism of the provincials, and embarrassing Royal Commissions did little to enhance the image or the morale of Ontario's finest. Despite the challenges to its continued existence, the OPP has emerged today as one of the finest, best equipped, and most brilliantly led police forces in the world." 276 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), black covers with gold lettering on spine. B&w photographs, reproductions. "This book is mainly concerned with certain British propaganda activities during the Second World War which were classified as 'black'. The BBC's broadcasts to Germany and enemy-occupied Europe, also leaflets bearing the imprint of HM Government and dropped by the RAF, were all 'white'. Black operations, however, never indicated their British origin. Various clandestine broadcasting stations, all of them outside the control of the BBC, sought, sometimes with surprising success, to give the impression that they were actually operating inside Germany or elsewhere in Europe. Great pains were taken to disguise the fact that a strangely variegated range of black printed matter had not, in spite of its convincing appearance and, where necessary, bogus imprints, been produced in Germany, France, Belgium, etc. Indeed, it was all manufactered in London. Little of it was disseminated by the RAF since other and far more covert methods were performed." "For one hundred and fifty years the Gurkhas have been coming down from their mountain homes of Nepal to join the British Army. I n that time they have carved a reputation as the toughest, bravest and most lovable fighting troops in the world. Certainly they are the best known. (This book) tellls their exciting, humorous and moving story. The vast canvas ranges from t h e f o r mation of the first Gurkha Regiments on April 24, 1815, to their steadfastness during the Indian Mutiny, through the fierce nineteenth century wars on India's turbulent frontiers, into World War I in France, Mesopotamia, and Gallipoli. W e jo i n th em as they add further glory to their reputation during World War II in North Africa, Italy and the jungles of Burma. The post-war period tells of their activities in Malaya and Borneo, and of their last-ditch actions against the Ch ine se on t he co ld, bare mountains of India's disputed northern frontier. It is a story of great endurance, courage far beyond the call of duty, and of staunch loyalty to the British Crown. The Gurkhas suffered 45,000 casualties in the two W orld Wa rs. Th ey have won twelve VCs and countless other decorations for gallantry." "The Boer War of 1899-1902 symbolized Britain's towering Imperial status and at the same tim e exposed potentially crippling weaknesses in her military machine. It marked both the apotheosis of her late-nineteenth-century Imperial expansion, and also its collapse. Like all wars, it promoted legends and convenient national myths a n d p a i d s cant respect to the truth....In his sensitive and scholarly account, Denis Judd is not concerned with partisanship. He recognizes the extraordinary courage and resourcefullness of the stoic Afrikaner farming community who, against al l od d s, c ar ri e d on an eighteen-month guerrilla campaign after the war seemed to be over. Dr. Judd above all deals clearly and vividly with the complex issues, stirring events and varied personalities that go to make up the Boer War." 207 pp, large 8vo (9 11/16" H). "(T)ells the public and private story of an unusual 'rake's progress'. For the first sixty years of his life Edward had fought against respectability and - in so doing - confirmed the low opinion of him held by his mother, Queen Victoria. Yet, by the time of his death in 1910 only nine years after succeeding to the throne, he had become the symbol of security to a society which was uncertain and deeply divided within itself. Kept in ignorance of State affairs by his mother, Edward spent his life as Prince of Wales pursuing pleasure and freely indulging his passions for the chase. Horses, yachts, cars and spas were among his favorite pastimes, while scandalous liaisons with 'professional beauties' nearly proved his undoing. Succinctly and entertainingly, with the aid of 250 photographs, prints and drawings, (the author) describes the life and reign of one of England's most flamboyant kings. In private life Edward VII was a devoted husband to Alexandra and an excellent father to their children (the future George V called him 'my best friend and the best of fathers'), and once he was in office his conviviality and natural gift for diplomacy proved invaluable in ending Britain's policy of 'splendid isolation'. It was only fitting that he should give his name to an era." 356 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "When the Edmonton Oilers won their first Stanley Cup in 1984, Albertans rejoiced. They had waited 91 years for just this moment. When they won it again in 1985, a new era in hockey was born: The Edmonton Era. Just six years after being incorporated into the National Hockey League, the Oilers had won back-to-back Stanley Cups and rewritten half the record book. In these few years they had grown from a cocky, immature team into a championship team with character and charisma. Kevin Lowe describes all of this and more. In particular, he talks about his teammates - the magnificent Mark Messier, the Flying Finns, the unbeatable Grant Fuhr, Boy Wonder Wayne Gretzky and, of course, the controversial Glen Sather. (This) is the complete, dynamic chronicle of the team that Gretzky helped to propel to greatness, told from the point of view of (his) roommate and teammate Kevin Lowe." The Sourcebook shows you how to adapt your current world or create a new one of your very own. There's even a solo adventure so you can start playing the basic game when you open this book. Later, you can add as many optional rules as you want. This is a game that you will grow with, but never grow out of. The 'Hero System' is a series of games that work alone or together. Characters from any game can be played in all the others...." Interior - previous owners name and light water stain (at gutter) on inside of front cover, small water stain in inside rear gutter, otherwise tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - light to moderate edge wear, three small corner creases and one larger, spine flat and uncreased. Good sound copy.
