THE HIGH WORLD., Bemelmans, Ludwig.
3 Bemelmans, Ludwig. THE HIGH WORLD.
New York Harper & Brothers 1954 Hard Cover Very Good - Good- Ludwig Bemelmans.
113 pp, 9 1/4" H. Orange/brown cloth with white lettering on spine, blue illustration on front board. Blue & white pictorial endpapers, b&w drawings, colour plates. By the author/illustrator of the Madeline books. "High in the mountains of the Austrian Tyrol lived the Amrainer family. They lived in a cabin wedged in among the boulders, and their life was simple and happy. But one day the Amrainers' peaceful existence was disrupted. They had gone down to the little village to spend Christmas with their relatives, the Maybocks, who kept the inn - but as the two families were sitting down to enjoy their goose dinner, an imposing-looking gentleman arrived and began demanding their attention and ordering them about. Before many days the Amrainers learned why the official had come to the little village and they realized that his mission would destroy the tranquillity of their lives. It took a near catastrophe to make the Oberministerialrat change, but change for the better he did - his heart became warm and even the expression on his face changed - and once a man starts to have love for his fellow creatures and does good, he can but continue to do so." "The incidents revolving around the avalanche in (this book) are true and are based on an account of it told to Mr. Bemelmans by an officer of the Tyrolean Gendarmerie who took part in the rescue." Small Christmas gift inscription on verso of front free endpaper, light browning on inside hinges, light toning in margins of pages, slight fading to colour on spine and at board edges, very small worn area at top of spine, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. "Alan Cooper writes about an operation which at the time and ever since has captured the imagination of the world - the attack on the German dams in May 1943. This account includes the whole lead up to the final mission; the development of the bouncing bomb, the f o r m i ng of 617 Squadron and the intense course of training carried out to make the operation a success. And it was FitzGibbon who, despite being vastly outnumbered, obtained an American surrender two days later. After the war, FitzGibbon was twice promoted and helped supress the Rebellion of 1837. 8 Heming, Arthur. THE DRAMA OF THE FORESTS: ROMANCE AND ADVENTURE.
Toronto S.B. Gundy 1924 First Canadian Edition. Hard Cover Good+ No Jacket Arthur Heming.
324 pp, 7 3/4" H. 14 colour plates, including frontispiece (collated). "(I) travelled twenty-three times through various parts of the vast northern woods, between Maine and Alaska, and covered thousands upon thousands of miles by canoe, pack-train, snowshoes, bateau, dog-train, buck-board, timber-raft, prairie-schooner, lumber-wagon, and 'alligator'. (B)ack again I went at all seasons of the year to encamp in that great timber-land that sweeps from the Atlantic to the Pacific. thus it has taken me thirty-three years to gather the information this volume contains - (but) I wish to explain that in compliance with the wishes of the leading actors - who actually lived their parts of this story - fictitious names have been given to the principal characters and to the principal trading posts, lakes, and rivers herein depicted. Furthermore, in order to give the reader a more interesting, complete, and faithful description of the daily and the yearly life of the forest dwellers as I have observed it, I have taken the liberty of weaving together the more interesting facts I have gathered - both first- and second-hand - into one continuous narrative as though it all happened in a single year. And in order to retain all the primitive local colour, the unique costumes, and the fascinating romance of the fur-trade days as I witnessed them in my twenties - though much of the life has already passed away - the scene is set to represent a certain year in the early (1890s)." Separation between some page gatherings (mainly at illustration locations) - pages are firm in binding, very slight bump at top corner of boards, wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor shelf soiling on bottom of text block, three very small stains on top of text block, minor rubbing on boards. Book is protected in a stiff mylar sleeve.

Harmondsworth Viking 1985 0670801372 / 9780670801374 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
804 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w photographs, map. "Bomber Command's campaign started on the very first day of the Second World War and ended within a few hours of the final victory in Europe five and a half years later. It was an attempt to win a war in Europe by strategic bombing on such an enormous scale that historians are only now beginning to piece together the finer details of the individual raids. There have been many books about Bomber Command, but Martin Middlebrook, the aviation historian, and his research colleague Chris Everitt are the first to compile the full story of this fascinating campaign in reference form. They undertook the gargantuan task not only of documenting every Bomber Command operation but also of obtaining information from local archives in Germany, Italy and the occupied countries on the effects of the raids. Little of this material has been published previously, and never before have the two sides of Bomber Command's war been brought together in this way. (It) is sure to become the standard work of reference on this extraordinary campaign." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, one pade with small wrinkle at bottom edge. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling.

PAUL BUNYAN: THE WORK GIANT., Turney, Ida Virginia.
20 Turney, Ida Virginia. PAUL BUNYAN: THE WORK GIANT.
Portland, Oregon Binfords and Mort 1941 First Edition Hard Cover Good Fair Norma Madge Lyon & Harold L. Price.
Unpaginated (approx. 80 pp), 10 7/8" H. From the Colophon: "The first edition consists of three thousand copies, the initial 500 of which are numbered, and this is number _____." No number is inserted. Pictorial map endpapers, color illustrations throughout. "Paul Bunyan is America's very own folk character. He did not spring from the legends of our English ancestors, nor from the Indian myths, but like America herself - of which he is a symbol - he just grew. Paul, like our countrymen, started on the East coast - in the Maine woods to be exact. As the nation grew, so did Paul and Babe, his faithful Blue Ox. Their first westward move was to the land of Hiawatha and the Great Lakes. Paul in his enthusiasm thought the great White Pine forests of Michigan and Wisconsin would last forever; but alas, they were soon exhausted, due to fire and wasteful exploitation. More careful this time, but still filled with a mighty urge for Logging - Paul went south into the Long Pine country. He even made the Mississippi his own private waterway, but again he and Babe got the wanderlust. This time they headed for the great Douglas Fir forest of the Pacific Northwest.
