2 Bennett, Ethel Hume. A TREASURE SHIP OF OLD QUEBEC.
Toronto Macmillan Company of Canada 1936 First Edition Hard Cover Good Hazel Boswell. Inscribed By Author
266 pp, 8 1/2" H. Blue cloth with black lettering on spine. Pictorial endpapers, b&w illustrations. Most of the front panel of the dust jacket has been laid in the front of the book, but the rest is missing. Signed on title page: "Ethel Hume Bennett, / Christmas 1936 / Toronto." "Good story of a group of young people who succeed in solving the mystery of the disappearance of a model ship, a seal, a miniature and a deed -- all keys to the future happiness of one of the group. Perhaps luck is with them to a surprising degree, but, none the less, the following down of clues is well developed and less left to chance than in the average juvenile mystery yarns. The period is today -- the place Quebec and environs, but a great deal of history is made an essential part of the unravelling of the mystery." Kirkus Review. Book is very slightly cocked, soft crease down spine, light fading/toning to spine and some edges of boards, light edge wear - a little heavier at top/bottom of spine and at corners, light browning to edges of text block, wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, small crease at top corner of pages 1to 6, small tear at bottom of page 3, several very small tears at bottom of page 1 and illustration list page - all tears are archivally taped.

48 pp + 24 colour plates (reproductions of illustrations from the 1875 edition, printed on one side of leaf only), 9 1/2" H. "By the 1870s, Patience was already a popular pastime, and it is surprising to learn that Lady Adelaide's compilation was the first on the subject to appear in the English language. (It) became, and remained, a best seller. It has been reprinted many times, but without the elegant and colourful plates that made it 'the' coffe-table book of London society during the latter half of Queen Victoria's reign and throughout that of Edward VII. The book delighted me so much that I decided to republish it, if it could be exactly reproduced. The generosity of Mrs Meredith and the skill of the printers have now made that possible." from the Preface. 431 pp, 8 5/8" H. Burgundy cloth with gilt lettering/banding on spine and front board - one of the Coles Canadian Collection.B&w illustrations. A facsimile of the edition published by John Winston Co., Philadelphia, 1913 - with a new introduction for the Coles Canadiana Collection. "After establishing the physical setting of French Canada and its natural splendor, Hopkins examines and describes the types - religious, social, psychological - who were responsible for the creation of French Canada, and French Canadian society. As themes, Hopkins emphsizes the discoverers Cartier and Champlain, the explorers - fur traders Lasalle, and LaVerendrye, the roles of the Church, the martyrs, the early government administrators. Hopkins' views and sentiments reflected the philosophies of many of his contemporaries, including John A. Macdonald, Wilfrid Laurier and Sir Thomas Chapais. Despite the strong and steady current of Imperial sentiment prevailing, an incipient Canadian nationalism was emerging, fostered by the creation of national heroes, villains and saints." 72 pp, 10 3/4" H. Colour illustrations. "In words and pictures of rare imaginative power, this book tells the story of a very special year in the life of a medieval priory - the year when the mysterious Blemyahs (beings with their faces on their chests) came. Working by night, unseen by the Brothers, the Blemyahs carved the misericords under the seats in the Quire stalls - images of Adam and Eve, Noah, the Three Kings and many others, which came to life as they were carved. And all through the year there was trouble, caused by the youngest Blemyah's most knotty creation - the cheeky, ever-meddlesome imp, Ruffin - who was finally cured of his naughtiness by the touch of a new-born Baby's hand." Very light edge wear - mainly on bottom edge of boards, slight lean to spine. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

12 O'Flaherty, Patrick. THE ROCK OBSERVED: STUDIES IN THE LITERATURE OF NEWFOUNDLAND.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1979 0802023517 / 9780802023513 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
222 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, reproductions, maps. "(A) study of how Newfoundland has been pereceived over the centuries by the islanders themselves and by outsiders. (This book) offers an integrated survey of Newfoundland literature, culture, and history. It illustrates the forces that have made Newfoundland a special place and Newfoundlanders a special people, 'a breed apart'. Against a background of political, economic, and cultural history, Patrick O'Flaherty submits the conflicting literary impressions of his island to a searching critical analysis. He finds the writings of explorers, missionaries, settlers, adventurers, novelists, and poets to be limited, or enlivened, by their own characters and preconceptions. There emerges a sympathetic but unsentimental picture of Newfoundland and its people, informed throughout by O'Flaherty's keen awarenes, based on an outport upbringing, of what Newfoundland has been and is." Faint erased pencil marks and two small light ink stains on front free endpaper. Dust jacket has very light browning on rear panel and on flaps.

13 Richardson, C.S. THE EMPEROR OF PARIS.
Doubleday Canada 2012 0385670907 / 9780385670906 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Near Fine
278 pp, 8vo (8 1/8" H). "An intricate and graceful story of the beginnings of an unlikely romance between an illiterate Parisian baker and a woman hiding in a world of books and art. Octavio Notre-Dame comes from a long line of bakers. Working the ovens of the eighth-district establishment known throughout the neighbourhood as the cake-slice, he produces baguettes and brioches with timeless perfection. Nutured by his father, Octavio discovers his imagination in stories, but like generations of Notre-Dame men before him, Octavio bears the shame of being unable to read. Isabeau Normande is born to parents devoted to appearance, to the beauty that shimmers on the surface of things. As a child she suffers a disfiguring accident. As a young woman she finds solace in the basement of the Louvre, restoring great works of art to their original glory. She loses herself in the faces of others while covering the scars that mark her own. But Isabeau's deepest comfort comes from books. Set in motion by an endearing cast of misfits - an impoverished painter, a near-blind watchmaker, a jazz-playing veteran of the trenches of World War I and a lonely bookseller - this is a story of the happenstance and fateful twists that can propel two would-be lovers into each other's paths."

ISBN 0802067689 "With an amazing knowledge of his subject (and also of related matters, e.g. mythology and Jungian psychology) the author here discusses witchcraft and diabolism in a way that arouses admiration for his exact and critical aptitude. The central theme is the historical origins (and, as a sidetrack, the psychological functions) of some forms of witchcraft. The question whether these should be regarded as survivals of the ancient pagan cults, or whether they should be supposed to be linked to Christedom as heresy, is given extensive treatment." (B)ridges the gap between the fur trading and logging eras, and the settlement of Temiskaming. Of equal interest is the mention in the diary of pioneers in the area, such as C.C. London Oxford University Press 1959 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Jennifer Miles.
187 pp, small 8vo (7 7/8" H). B&w illustrations by Jennifer Miles, dust jacket design by William Stobbs. First printing of this title in the Oxford Children's Library series. "Richard was only eight when news came that his father had been slain and that he, though so young, was now the Duke of Normandy. He had many loyal friends among his father's supporters, but they were unable to protect him when the King of France, vowing friendship, treacherously carried him away to France. Though often self-willed, the boy Duke had great courage, and this, together with his friendship with the king's gentle and pathetic son Carloman, helped him to endure the hard days of captivity, and carried him through the exciting adventures of his escape and return home.
