3 "A Wanderer". Introduction by Admiral E.M. Eller. (Noah Johnson.) JOURNALS OF TWO CRUISES ABOARD THE AMERICAN PRIVATEER YANKEE.
New York Macmillan 1967 First Edition Very Good+ Very Good-
156 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). B&w reproductions, map. "Written by a young, ardently romantic ship's clerk who signs himself 'A Wanderer' (almost certainly Noah Johnson, these journals) record the heady adventures of the American privateer 'Yankee' on her first two voyages during the War of 1812. Only recently discovered among the possessions of a New England family, they are printed here for the first time. These historic journals bring vividly to life sea voyages that epitomized Yankee daring and skill, dedication to freedom, and Christian charity in dealing with conquered enemies. What life was like aboard a privateer and how these warships were manned, sailed, and deployed against the enemy is nowhere better illustrated than in these superb firsthand accounts." Very light browning on fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket has very light edge wear - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, scattered small/tiny scuffs, very light soiling, light browning - mainly on spine and flap-folds.

Michael Joseph, London, 1981, first edtion.
206 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0718120396 Charming b&w illustrations. "There is a growing need for the 'quiet fields' in this noisy, restless world. Mercifully, they can still be found by the country-lover and naturalist . This book tells of a year spent deep in the countryside, beginning when the year is young, when trees and hedges are bare to the winter winds, and on through the spring, summer and autumn, to winter once again. Whatever the season of t h e y e a r t h ere is always something to see in the countryside, even when the 'quiet fields' are sheeted with snow. There are the winter migrants - the wildfowl of the wet places, the delicate fieldfares and redwings - who come to Britain to e sc ap e t he b it t er t emperatures of their native lands. 'BB' also describes the advent of the spring migrants, which bring such intense joy to the naturalist that he even had to surrender his studio to a swallow family, which honoured him wi th a v is it and tw o l us ty bro ods of young. And the arrival of frogs at his Big Pond, the first for years, was a red-letter day in his calendar. There is still magic and a sense of peace in Britain's woods and fields. This book sets out to p rov e it , a nd the illu stra tio ns by D .J. Watkins-Pitchford echo exactly the spirit of the writing...." First established in 1897 in Stoney Creek, Ontario, the WI set out to improve the conditions of life for rural women through the promotion of domestic science education. That mandate soon expanded to include self-improvement, government lobbying, and community betterment. At the same time the organization spread geographically, with branches forming in virtually every rural community in Ontario, then across the country and around the world. Tracing that growth, this history concentrates on the activities of members in their own communities, and explains the enduring popularlity of the Women's Institutes...based on extensive research in provincial records, local Institute sources from across the province, and oral history interviews with dozens of members..." 13 Arnup, John D. MIDDLETON: THE BELOVED JUDGE.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1988 0771007959 First Edition Very Good Very Good
202 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "(T)he story of one of Ontario's and Canada's greatest judges, William Edward Middleton (1860-1948), who served as a justice of the Supreme Court of Ontario for thirty-three years, twenty-two of them as an appellate judge. At a time when a number of Supreme Court justices were belligerent to counsel and irascible toward their brother judges, Mr. Justice Middleton set a high standard of courtesy and civility that has carried on to the present day. Because (he) never sought attention or encouraged controversy, his contributions have been known heretofore only in legal circles. Yet here is a man whose written judgments are still cited fifty, sixty, even seventy years later, the judge who sat on 'the Great Stork Derby' case of the 1930s, and who decided which of the two litigious Kellogg brothers could sell his corn flakes in Canada. In addition, Middleton was a renowned botanist and legal scholar. The prison inmates of his Bible class knew him better and appreciated his exemplary character far more than the average citizen. (This book) is rich with anecdotage and presents important legal cases in a manner the general reader can understand and appreciate." Minor old tape residue at top/bottom edges of free endpapers, small corner crease on page 7, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, small ink mark on bottomm edge of both boards. Maura and Patrick O'Connell, fifteen- and twelve-year-old Irish peasants, seek to escape a country destroyed by famine and the greed of English landlords. Their emigration is a search for life itself. For Sir Laurence Kirkle, eleven and son of one such English lord, America holds the promise of justice, though he steal s a f o r tune from his fath er to get there. Colorful characters, young and old, pop up everywhere - Mr. Pickler, investigator, actor Horatio Drabble, and Fred No-name and Sergeant Rumpkin of the Lime Street Runners Association. And there are Mr . C le m sp oo l and Toby Grout, the Reverend Bartholomew, Ralph Toggs and the vile Mrs. Sonderbye. Are they helping the children or stealing from them? For Maura, Patrick and Laurence,it is often hard to know until it's too late. Indeed, how th e O' Con ne lls an d young Laurence come to share a common fate in the English city of Liverpool - embarkation port for America - makes for an adventure alive with ironic coincidence and surprise. Inspired by the Victorian novels published in seri al fo rm, whi ch w ith ev ery installment pres ented new and diverting answers to the question 'What will happen next?', (this book) offers more twists and turns of story than a nineteenth-century back alley. (The first volume) ends on a spectacul ar clif f-ha nger . Mo re s usp enseful fun awaits in 'Book Two: Lord Kirkle's Money'." Fine/Fine

128 pp, oblong large 8vo (9 1/2" H x 10 3/4" D). Decorated endpapers, profusely illustrated in color and b&w with photographs, reproductions. "Nothing captures the spirit of the Old West better than the jaunty tunes and classic ballads the cowboys and settlers sang, songs richly represented in this visually stunning volume. Panoramic in scope, the 45 songs, coupled with works of art from The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the Buffalo Bill Historical Center, Cody, Wyoming, chronicle the stirring saga of westward expansion and reflect every facet of life during one of the most exciting periods in our nation's history. The lore of the West intrigued many artists, and the works featured include paintings and sculpture by Frederic Remington, Charles M. Russell, and N.C. Wyeth, as well as a myriad of fascinating artifacts: saddles, spurs, guns, guitars, a stagecoach ticket, a Navajo blanket, and other objects that provide a vivid picture of life in the West. A lively and intriguing text further illuminates this bygone world, exploring the history of the songs, their lyrics, the accompanying art, and the development of the West. The music, arranged for beginning to intermediate musicians and accompanied by chords for the guitar or banjo, is suitable for piano, organ, violin, or recorder."
