Since that time about twenty thousand individuals belonging to every race and every generation have been canonized; they have become saints with a captial S. In this book you will find brief biographies and selections from the writings of twenty-eight Saints who have become widely known or who represent the characteristic mentalities of various bands of Christian brot h e r s . T h e se famous saints are all strikingly individual. They differ in temperament, race and education. But among the things they have in common is that they are teachers par excellence. So we may turn to them for wisdom, for illuminatio n of t he p r ob le ms we face today, and for mental and spiritual resources infinitely more significant than bigger and better bombs and bank accounts."
