MARCHING AS TO WAR: CANADA'S TURBULENT YEARS, 1899-1953., Berton, Pierre.
2 Berton, Pierre. MARCHING AS TO WAR: CANADA'S TURBULENT YEARS, 1899-1953.
Doubleday Canada 2001 0385257252 / 9780385257251 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine
632 pp, large 8vo (9 5/8" H). Pictorial endpapers, b&w maps. "The first war of the century, which took Canadian soldiers to South Africa, and the last, which sent them to Korea, bracket the tumultuous years of the (20th) century's first half like bookends on the shelf of history. They have a good deal in common, these two minor conflicts, whose chronicles pale when compared to the bloodbaths of the two world wars. Canada's wartime days are long past, and for many, the scars of war have healed. Vimy has been manicured clean, its pockmarked slopes softened by a green mantle of Canadian pines. Dieppe has reverted to a resort town, its beaches long since washed free of Canadian blood. Now a days, Canadians are proud of their role as Peacekeepers, from which they have gained a modicum of the international acclaim the nation has always craved, with precious little blood wasted in the process. In this monumental work, Pierre Berton brings Canadian history to life once again, relying on a host of sources, including newspaper accounts and first-hand reports, to tell the story of these four wars through the eyes of the privates in the trenches, the generals at the front, and the politicians and families back home. By profiling the interwar years, Berton traces how one war led to the next, and how the country was changed in the process. Illustrated with maps and line drawings, 'Marching as to War' describes how the experience of war helped to bind Canada together as a nation and chronicles the transformation of Canada's dependence upon Great Britain and its slow emergence as an independent nation caught in a love-hate relationship with the United States." Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling and very minor rubbing.

VIMY., Berton, Pierre.

Toronto McClelland and Stewart 1986 0771013396 / 9780771013393 First Printing Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
336 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). Pictorial endpapers, b&w maps. "On a chill Easter Monday in 1917, with a blizzard blowing in their faces, the four divisions of the Canadian Corps in France did what neither the British nor the French armies had been able to do in more than two years of fighting. They seized and held the best-defended German bastion on the Western Front - a muddy scarp known as the Vimy Ridge. The French, who had lost 150,000 men trying to take the ridge, didn't believe it could be done. Nor did the Germans; even the British were skeptical. But the Canadians triumphed. They went over the top at dawn; by lunch time, most of the ridge was in their hands - at a cost of only ten thousand casualties. How could an army of civilians from a nation without a military tradition secure the first enduring Imperial victory in thirty-two months of warfare? The answer, as Pierre Berton makes vividly clear in his haunting account, was precisely that these men were civilians, with flexible minds unfettered by military rules." Minor wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket is price clipped, has very light edgewear/wrinkling.

292 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). Map endpapers, b&w photographs. "The second battle of Ypres provided the First Canadian Division with its baptism of fire, and it could not have been worse. They were holding a salient, jutting out so that they were targets from three sides. The Germans, for the first time ever, used chlorine gas, which turned the Canadians' bayonets green and destroyed their lungs. Then they discovered that in combat conditions their Ross rifles jammed, as the waves of Germans hit their trenches. At the end John McCrae looked across the battleground where so many hundreds of his countrymen had fallen, and wrote 'In Flanders Fields'. Back in Canada, the war began in earnest the day the casualty lists were posted. Dust jacket has light wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing, faint line indentation on front panel.

552 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "For some, like the aging man-about-town Agar Adamson, and the promising politician Talbot Papineau, the war was both the climax and the denouement of their careers. For others, like Harold Innis, just off an Ontario farm, the horror of the trenches changed the direction and purpose of their lives. For Vancouver secretary Grace MacPherson, war was a great adventure; for Ottawa socialite Ethel Chadwick, it was a wave that pushed her aside and left her stranded for life. For Max Aitken, better known as Lord Beaverbrook, it was an opportunity to be exploited. For Newfoundlander Owen Steele, it was an heroic duty that ended in a rain of bullets at Beaumont-Hamel. Sandra Gwyn has woven the intimate threads of these lives into a composite portrait that is overwhelming in its power." Minor wrinkle at top of hinges.
