2 (Livingstone, David). Edited, with an introduction by I. Schapera. DAVID LIVINGSTONE. FAMILY LETTERS 1841-1856. VOLUME TWO: 1849-1856.
Chatto & Windus, London, 1959, first edition.
320 pp, 8vo (8 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. VOLUME II ONLY. "David Livingstone's letters are the most important source of information about his activities, beliefs and opinions. The present collection, drawn chiefly from family archives, c overs not only the whole of his career as a missionary in Bechuanaland, but also his first great crossing of the continent from Loanda to Quilimane. Extracts from a few have appeared in various biographies, but the great majority have never b e e n p u blished before. Vivid and sometimes extremely outspoken, they contain much detail about his relations with fellow missionaries, Boers and Native chiefs, and about his own journeys into the interior; they afford new insights into his re li gi ou s o ut lo ok, conceptions of missionary enterprise, scientific and linguistic interests, and medical knowledge." Very small dint and tiny stain on top of text block, soft crease/wrinkle on pages 25 to 28, very small red ink dot on front fr ee end pap er , sli ght browning to edges of text block, light wrinkling at bottom of spine, one tiny corner bump. 7 Brayley, Martin. Series editor, Martin Windrow. THE BRITISH ARMY 1939-45 (1) NORTH-WEST EUROPE. OSPREY MEN-AT-ARMS SERIES 354. (I)
Oxford Osprey 2001 1841760528 / 9781841760520 First Edition Soft Cover Very Good Colour Plates By Mike Chappell.
48 pp, 9 3/4" H. B&w photographs, drawings, diagrams, map. 8 pages of colour uniform studies. "The Second World War was Britain's last as a world power; it was a citizen's war, in which most British men and women were mobilised. For a year it saw Britain standing alone aginst the fascist dictatorships; and winning it cost the sacrifice of the entire national wealth. This first title of three describes and explains the uniforms developed for European service. It traces the appearance of the 'Tommy' from pre-war mobilisation, through the years of defeat and endurance, to the final return to Europe on D-Day and the long fighting advance to northern Germany by the spring of 1945. Uniform information is supported by a campaign summary, infantry organisation tables, lists of arms and services, and basic specifications of a number of heavy weapons." Interior - small ghost sticker mark at top inside corner of front cover, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - crease down front cover near spine.

12 Cummings, Ray. EXPLORERS INTO INFINITY.
Avalon, New York, (1965), Ist edition.
192 pp, 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. "Size (matter), Space and Time were the great trinity around which Ray Cummings wrote his most famous novels, and the present story - which appeared as two short serial novels in 1927 and 1928, in Wierd Tales magazine - incorporates all three. The story is set in an indeterminate 'future' where interplanetary commerce is routine, as we see our narrator employed in communications involving the Martian mail. Among his friends is Brett Gryce, son of a famous scientist and inventor. Dr. Gryce has constructed what he calls a myrdoscope. There are, he says, normally invisible rays, akin to light, crossing Space, which this device makes visible. And these rays come from a super-universe, beyond the stars - a universe in which our own universe is but an atom!..." BRIDGES OF BATTLE: FAMOUS BATTLEFIELD ACTIONS AT BRIDGES AND RIVER CROSSINGS., Featherstone, Donald.
14 Featherstone, Donald. BRIDGES OF BATTLE: FAMOUS BATTLEFIELD ACTIONS AT BRIDGES AND RIVER CROSSINGS.
London Arms and Armour 1998 1854094491 / 9781854094490 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
256 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w plates. "From more than 2,000 years of military history, (the author) has selected some one hundred examples of battles centred on river crossings. They range in size fom small-scale actions such as the battle for Powick Bridge in the early months of the English Civil War to massive, army-scale operations including the final crossing of the Rhine at Remagen during the Second World War. One of the biggest battles during the Napoleonic Wars - indeed, the biggest battle to that date with more than 300,000 men in combat - was fought across the Danube in 1809, culminating in the battle of Wagram. Later, as Napoleon's fortunes began to ebb, there took place the desperate and tragic crossing of the Berezina in 1812 when Napoleon's depleted army, retreating from Moscow, fought to cross the freezing river to escape the pursuing and encirling Russians and the hell of a Russian winter. The American Civil War also provides many examples of battles for river crossings, such as First Bull Run, the opening engagement of the war, the fight for Burnside's Bridge at Antietam and the Battle of the Big Black River during the riverine campaign for Vicksburg. Other, often lesser-known, actions are also to be found in this book, including tales of desperate courage from the Indian Mutiny and other British colonial wars. The range of contributions, including expert analyses and eyewitness accounts often enables the reader to see both sides of the story - those of the defender and the attacker - and to compare battles fought in similar circumstances, but with very different weapons, across the centuries." A few faint scuffs on the front board. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, one small edge tear archivally taped.
