4 Chapman, Eddie. Foreword by Frank Owen. THE REAL EDDIE CHAPMAN STORY.
London Tandem Mass Market Paperback Good
253 pp, 7 1/8" H. c1966. In 1940, safecracker Eddie Chapman offered his services to the German High Command as a spy. His first mission was to blow up the de Havilland works in Hatfield. "What is now revealed for the first time is that Chapman had immediately upon landing made contact with senior officials of the Air Ministry who listened with stunned silence to his story. Shortly after, a German reconnaissance plane which was allowed over to photograph the results of his mssion, reported that the buildings were in ruins and smoke was still rising. At Hatfield, the camouflage experts quietly congratulated themselves on having made it look as though an explosives expert had been at work! Chapman was working for his own country at the risk of his life. Soon after he was shipped back to Germany through Lisbon, where Hitler, grateful for the blow struck against England, awarded him the Iron Cross. For two years, Chapman, behaving like a hero of the Third Reich, spied on the Germans and constantly fed information back to British Intelligence, before being parachuted in for a second time to report on the range of the V-bombs. His true story makes incredible reading." Rear cover advertises the movie "Triple Cross", starring Christopher Plummer as Eddie Chapman and Yul Brynner as Colonel von Grunen. Interior - very light browning to pages, tiny bump to top corner of pages 1 to 75, tiny crease at top vorner of page leaf 167/168, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. "Of more than 600 Victoria Crosses awarded to British and Empire servicemen during the First World War, nineteen were awarded to airmen of the newly formed Royal Flying Corps and Royal Naval Air Service. Of these, four were posthumous awards and all but one of the total were for officers. Some of these valorous airmen were from humble backgrounds and with limited education, others were collegiate men from wealthy families, but in the words of one senior officer they all had in common 'the guts of a lion'. (This book provides fascinating insights into the lives of these bravest of the brave, and of the circumstances in which they won their country's highest award for valour." Clean bright copy.

CANADIAN IMPRESSIONISM., Duval, Paul.
7 Duval, Paul. CANADIAN IMPRESSIONISM.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1990 0771029650 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good
166 pp, square 4to (11 3/4" H). "This beautiful volume, full of the light and colour that characterize most Impressionist art, is a thoroughly enjoyable guide to Canadian Impressionist painting from roughly 1885 to 1920. It brings together, for the first time in book form, the Canadian representatives of the world's most popular and accessible school of painting, offering a totally fresh look at a now-vanished society, and presenting a strong contrast to the isolated, unpopulated vision of the country usually portrayed by the Group of Seven - although members of that group are represented in their earlier, more intimate styles. 'Canadian Impressionism' conveys a vivid cross-section of the subject, including many paintings that have never before been reproduced. The work of neglected artists such as Helen McNicoll, Frank Armington, John S. Gordon, John Russell, and William Clapp is featured among the seventy full-colour plates, alongside the more familiar talents of J.W. Morrice, Paul Peel, Lawren Harris, Maurice Cullen, and A.Y. Jackson. (A) revelation and a delight, showing as it does a charming side of Canadian art that has not, until now, received the attention that it deserves." Light toning to edges of pages/text block, waviness to top/bottom edges of text block, several very small dents at bottom edge of boards, a few small shallow dents on fore-edge of boards, several very light stains on boards. Dust jacket has minor waviness at top/bottom edges, very light toning at top/bottom inside edges, sharp crease down rear hinge

Swan Hill, Shrewsbury, 1998, first edition.
160 pp, large 8vo (9 11/16" H), soft cover with self-flaps. ISBN 1853108529 "This book is written for the amateur one-horse owner to assist in mastering the basic skills which should lead to effective and enjoyable riding for both members of the p artnership. The improved level of performance may allow the pair to compete creditably in a variety of events at, or perhaps beyond, a good local level. The book provides the indispensable guidelines; it fills the inevitable gaps and helps t o c l a r ify and fix the details of technique. Very importantly, it enlarges on the theory that underpins the rational movements and practice of correct and successful riding and so contributes to a wider, deeper understanding of the whole. Th e bo o k is c op iously illustrated in colour and the horses have been selected to demonstrate the schooling movements and exercises that are typical of those that would be within reach of the amateur rider who aspires to take part in club-level co mp eti ti on at a goo d medium standard." CHIEF ENGINEER: LIFE OF A NATION BUILDER - SANFORD FLEMING., Green, Lorne.
11 Green, Lorne. CHIEF ENGINEER: LIFE OF A NATION BUILDER - SANFORD FLEMING.
Dundurn, Toronto, 1993.
191 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1550021958 B&w photographs. "(T)he story of one of the most creative, adventurous, and yet too-often overlooked giants of the Industrial Age - Canada's Sandford Fleming. His influence spanned the North American continent and beyond. As chief engineer of the Intercolonial and Canadian Pacific railways, he shaped and steered the greatest engineering challenge of his day: the laying of the ribbons of railway steel that bound together a fledgling country. He can be credited as well with the telegraph cables that began to criss-cross the globe. Few are aware that it was Fleming who gave us the system of universal time. He also designed the first Canadian adhesive postage stamp, which was issued in 1851. Sandford Fleming's triumphs are all the greater considering the natural and human adversities obstructing every step of his way. Jealousies, back-stabbing, pork-barrel politics, and bureaucratic ineptitude were as intrinsic to mega-projects then as they are now. Fleming's life story constitutes a compelling and universal drama." Previous owner's name/date in ink on free front endpaper. Dust jacket has corner crease on front flap. Very Good+/Very Good +

MAYFAIR: A SOCIAL HISTORY., Kennedy, Carol.
12 Kennedy, Carol. MAYFAIR: A SOCIAL HISTORY.
Hutchinson, London, 1986, first edition.
300 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0091555906 B&w plates. "For more than 250 years Mayfair has been the best address in London - rivalled now by Belgravia but still a glamorous and desirable place in which to live and work. I n this century it has had a glittering image as the playground of high society, and Mayfair is still shorthand for a moneyed way of life, though these days the money comes mainly from expense accounts and Middle East oil wells. And the des i r a b l e p roperties in the glossy ads in 'Country Life' and 'Tatler' are more likely to be offices than private homes. From its raffish Restoration origins this has been an area which boasted an extraordinary mixture of residents, from member s of C ha rl es II ' s court to Clive of India, Beau Brummell, Mrs Fitzherbert (who secretly married the Prince Regent in the drawing-room of a house in Park Street), through eminent Victorians like Disraeli and Florence Nightingale to plutocrats l ike Ba rne y B arn a to an d J.P. Morgan, and leaders of pre-war society like the Mountbattens and Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. Until the late nineteenth century it was also a village of all the talents, a cross-section of society where aristocrats and art isan s li ved back t o b ack a nd their neighbours included politicans, playwrights, poets and craftsmen. Finally, in this fascinating social history, Carol Kennedy looks hard at post-war Mayfair; at what happens on the real-life Monopol y bo ard w hen t he le ases fall in ."
