New York SMITHMARK 1996 0765197332 / 9780765197337 Very Good Near Fine Enrico Arno.
618 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w decorations by Enrico Arno, b&w photographs, musical notations. "(A) notable milestone in the collection and presentation of oral literature and traditions from black communities in the Western Hemisphere. It demonstrates the powerful cultural influence of Africa on this side of the Atlantic. (I)ncludes a wide array of orally transmitted traditions of the numerous, sometimes disparate, African-American cultures of the New World. Among these traditions are tales of scoundrels, heroes, rollicking adventures, friendship, and much more: songs, myths, myth-legends, epic-like narrations, and recollections of historical happenings. There are descriptions of cult life, around which many traditions and beliefs flow; of music and dance, which have an integral connection with traditional ways; and of the social scene in places where Africans and Europeans, or white and black ideas intermingled and became Afro-American. (This book) perceives the interconnections of cultural inheritances throughout the Afro-American region and the local divergences as well. Early sections of the book survey the traditions and oral literature of Spanish, French, and English-speaking islands of the Caribbean, and of areas of Central and South America inhabited by people of African descent. There follows an extensive section devoted to the tales, beliefs, recollections, songs, religious epics, and a wide variety of oral creations of blacks in the United States. The Appendixes include a number of African stories and descriptions that point up the impact of African traditions on the cultures of Afro-America. Very light browning to edges of text block, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

280 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs, drawings, reproductions, map. "During the Battle of the Atlantic, Dr. George Hendry had just finished performing two major surgical operations on board the destroyer HMCS Ottawa when his ship was ambushed by 13 German U-boats. Canadian warships like Ottawa had inadequate radar sets that were incapable of detecting submarines approaching in the dark. On September 13, 1942, U-91 stole in and torpedoed Ottawa, sinking her in 20 minutes. Utterly exhausted, Dr. Hendry was lost along with 113 of his shipmates. George Hendry was a much-loved man, a great university athlete, and a very good doctor. Unfortunately, he was also naive and too trusting. One night in January 1941, he committed a very foolish indiscretion. He would spend the rest of his tragically short life making amends for this mistake." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has some areas of very light edge wrinkling, very light rubbing.

Volumes 1-8 & 10 of the TimeWars Series, 6 7/8" H. The series revolves around a 27th century organization tasked with preventing time travellers from altering history. In the books, many people & events we consider fictional are real and vice versa and there are many references to famous literature and authors. 1. The Ivanhoe Gambit - 209 pp, 1984 first printing, ISBN 0441377629 - Sometimes Sergeant Major Lucas Priest wondered why he had enlisted in the U.S. Army Temporal Corps. Fighting in the Time Wars wasn't the easiest way to make a living. But a demented scheme to impersonate the King of England was threatening to change the course of history. Two army teams had already failed to intercept the madman. So Lucas and his men must clock back to the twelfth century to try and prevent an irreversible split in time." 2. The Timekeeper Conspiracy - 215 pp, 1984 second printing, ISBN 0441811361 - "Captain Lucas Priest, a seasoned veteran of the Temporal Corps, was dispatched to seventheenth century France. In the world of Cardinal Richelieu and the Three Musketeers, he must infiltrate the terrorist underground called the Timekeepers and put an end to their mad schemes forever." 3. The Pimpernel Plot - 211 pp, 1985 second printing, ISBN 0441664105 - Now Lucas is faced with the greatest challenge of his career: to readjust the events of the French Revolution and correct the blunder made by an agent of the Temporal Corps. Alex Corderro, in his first hitch in Minus Time, had caused the death of Sir Percy Blakeney, the English aristocrat who played a key role in saving French royalists from the guillotine. Someone had to impersonate Blakeney and carry out his task." 4. The Zenda Vendetta - 206 pp, 1985 first printing, ISBN 0441959156 - "In the kingdom of Ruritania, Prince Rudolf is about to be crowned king. Instead, due to the machinations of his half brother, he becomes the 'Prisoner of Zenda'. That was back in the 19th century. But history is about to repeat itself - with a twist. The Timekeepers, the terrorist underground from the 27th century, have traveled backward once again to try to sabotage the course of history." 5. The Nautilus Sanction - 196 pp, 1985 first printing, ISBN 0441565662 - "(T)he Nautilus, a Russian supersub armed with enough nuclear firepower to blow history apart at the seams, has been hijacked from the 27th century. Priest and his commandos clock back to pursue the sub, and come face-to-face with a man whose thirst for revenge is so great he would start the greatest war of all time - everywhere at once! To stop him, the Time Commandos have only the help of the Canadian fisherman, Ned Land, and a middle-aged French writer of voyages extraordinaires named Jules Verne - ." 6. The Khyber Connection - 195 pp, 1986 first printing, ISBN 04414375257 - "The year was 1897. The Khyber Pass echoed with the sounds of war. Soldiers from Britain, India, and Afghanistan were immersed in a bloody conflict. Enter the Time Commandos. Their mission: To foil a plot that has set timelines on a collision course. Only they can save the timestream from disruption - with a little help from a war correspondent named Winston Churchill - and a waterboy called Gunga Din." 7. The Argonaut Affair - 195 pp, 1987 first printing, ISBN 0441029116 - "A creature of Greek myth appears in the 27th century - proving that something is seriously wrong down the timeline! The Temporal Intelligence Agency fear an oncoming disaster of staggering proportions. Delaney, Cross, and their new partner Steiger clock back to the age of gods, monsters and heroes - into the heart of an epic quest. Lost in a legendary time and place, the future of two universes is in their hands!" 8. The Dracula Caper - 212 pp, 1988 first printing, ISBN 0441166164 - "A plague of vampires and werewolves falls on Victoria's England - but there's nothing supernatural about these creatures. They're genetically engineered monsters from the far future, dropped into the past as a devilish tactic in the Time Wars! It's a mystery more baffling than any penned by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle - a cosmic riddle to stagger the imagination of the great H.G. Wells. Soon the creators of Sherlock Holmes and 'The Time Machine' join forces with the Time Commandos to combat an ageless evil which strains the very fabric of the universe!". 10. The Hellfire Revolution - 192 pp, 1990 first printing, ISBN 0441812627 - "Boston, 1765. The freedom-fighting Sons of Liberty are under attack by a Tory secret society called the Hellfire Club. The club's leader - the headless horseman - is a ghostly creature seemingly invulnerable to blades and musket balls. His plot to assassinate Sam Adams, Ben Franklin and George Washington will detroy every dream of the Thirteen Colonies - and cancel the United States of America! Can the Time Commandos wage war against a phantom? And worse yet, can they stop a cosmic catastrophe that will make the Big Band look like a firecracker?" Interiors - light toning to pages in some volumes, volume 10 has a bookstore stamp on the first page, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. 291 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). "The 369th Infantry Regiment was the first African American regiment mustered to fight in World War I. In a war where the vast majority of black soldiers served in the Service of Supply, unloading ships and building roads and railroads, the men of the 369th trained and fought side by side with the French at the front (America's segregation policy prohibited them from serving together with white American soldiers) and ultimately spent more days in the trenches than any other American unit. They went to war in defense of a country afflicted by segregation, Jim Crow laws, lynchings, and racial violence, but a country they believed in all the same. Despite extraordinary odds, the 369th became one of the most successful - and feared - regiments of the war. The Harlem Hellfighters, as their enemies named them, showed extraordinary valor on the battlefield, with many soldiers winning the Croix de Guerre and the Legion of Honor, and were the first Allied unit to reach the Rhine River. A riveting depiction of both social triumph and battlefield heroism." Tiny bump at top of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, minor rubbing.

"Still segregated in World War I, the U.S. Army was reluctant to use its 93d Division of black soldiers in combat with its own units and instead assigned the division's three National Guard regiments and one draftee regiment to the French Army. The battlefield successes of these African Americans under the French at the height of the German offensives in 1918 turned white e x p e c t a t i ons of failure upside down. Their bravery and heroism gained the respect of the French and Germans alike and called into question the U.S. Army's policy of racially segregating its divisions. The full story of their accomplishmen ts i s to ld h er e fo r the first time. Written from the perspective of the enlisted men and their white and black officers, this book highlights the combat action of individuals as well as entire units of the 93d. Readers join Company C of the 37 0th I nfa ntr y u nde r hea vy fire as they capture artillery pieces, machine guns, and even a portion of a railroad track to become the first American unit to win the Croix de Guerre. They learn about the extraordinary bravery of Cpl. Freddie Sto wers , t he o nly Afri can Am eric an in the war to be nominated for - and seventy years later posthumously awarded - the Medal of Honor, and others who earned the Distinguished Service Cross and French awards for gallantry in combat. In all, some 3,500 men of t he 9 3d fe ll i n b attle with 591 of them buried in France next to their white comrades, the only equality that the U.S. Army then granted them. While acknowledging the many problems encountered by the 93d, he focuses on the many triumphs of these tenacious soldiers as they fought both the enemy and the preju dices of th eir fel low Am erica ns."
