BEYOND WORDS: MYSTICAL FANCY IN CHILDREN'S LITERATURE., Higgins, James E.
6 Higgins, James E. BEYOND WORDS: MYSTICAL FANCY IN CHILDREN'S LITERATURE.
Teachers College Press, New York, 1971, second printing.
112 pp, 7 3/16" H, soft cover. "The art of creativity in children's literature is evaluated according to a different set of criteria and standards from that applied to adult literature - namely, the writer's ability to show respect for the 'innate rights' of the child and to write with a sensitive feeling for the integrity of childhood. Like Coleridge, James E. Higgins defines art, in concepts 'beyond words', as the fusion of new identities through the extraordinary functions of the imaginat ion. Classically known fairy tales and books of mystical fancy appeal directly to the 'inner child', an aspect of childhood that grownups, teachers, and writers for children can get to know it they look through the child's looking glass wi t h o u t t h e adult's perception. In this discussion of children's literature, ranging from the works of W.H. Hudson and George MacDonald through 'The Hobbit' of J.R.R. Tolkien and 'The Little Prince' of Antoine de Saint-Exupery, Professor Higg in s co nt in u al ly e mphasizes the importance of things that are not seen as essential to the development of the child's spirit of security in today's educational society, which often tends to relinquish the concentration on things of wonder and fa it h f or mor e rel eva nt everyday identities." New York Portfolio / Penguin 2013 1591846161 / 9781591846161 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
275 pp, 9 1/4" H. Colour photographs. "(Tamara) Mellon's business savvy, creative eye, and flair for design built Jimmy Choo into a premier name in the competitive fashion industry. Over time, Mellon grew Jimmy Choo into a billion-dollar brand. She became the British prime minister's trade envoy and was honored by the Queen with the Order of the British Empire - yet it's her personal glamour that keeps her an object of global media fascination. 'Vogue' photographed her weddig. 'Vanity Fair' covered her divorce and the criminal trial that followed. 'Harper's Bazaar' toured her London town house and her New York mansion, right down to the closets. In creating the shoes that became a fixture on 'Sex and the City' and red carpets around the world, Mellon relied on her own impeccable sense of what the customer wanted - because she 'was' that customer. What she didn't know at the time was that success would come at a high price - after struggles with an obstinate business partner, a conniving first CEO, a turbulent marriage, and a mother who tried to steal her hard-earned cash. Now Mellon shares the whole larger-than-life story, with shocking details that have never been presented before." THE NATURAL SUPERIORITY OF WOMEN., Montagu, Ashley.
10 Montagu, Ashley. THE NATURAL SUPERIORITY OF WOMEN.
George Allen & Unwin, London, 1954, first edition.
205 pp, 8vo (8 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "The author develops his highly provocative theme - that women have always been subjected by men - in a sober argument backed by considerable evidence. He maintains that only physical strength has enabled men to domineer for so long, but that in constitution, resistance to disease and size of brain, women are far superior. Fewer women go insane or commit suicide; the legend of emotional instability is easily disproved; women are jus t a s g o o d as men at business. The traditional view of many points Dr Montagu cuts down with sharp, incisive wit. He is satisfied that where women, in history or today, fall short of men in their achievements, it is because that is where men ha v e co n ti nu ed deliberately and out of fear, to keep them down. The author's pungent and reasoned arguments will arouse considerable controversy. But at the same time his lively approach has resulted in a most important and entertaining boo k." Ve ry li ght br own ing to pages - light on endpapers and edges of text block, minor bump at top of spine. Grange, Hoo, Rochester, 2000.
304 pp, folio (14 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1840133732 Profusely illustrated in colour. "Built to astonish and to celebrate the magnificence of the most powerful families in the world, royal palaces and houses are the consequences of an age in which the splendor and opulence of a prince or a people could be measured by the decor of a salon, by the grandeur of a building or the originality of a fountain. Suspended between the sky and the earth, as occurred in the Far East, or solidly rooted to the ground, as was the norm in Europe, the house of the monarch has alwys been the meeting point of two minds: that of the master, who saw in his house the expression of his power and creativity, and that of the architect a n d t e a m s of craftsmen who built it for him, often creating a noble monument rather than a place to live....This book tells of the mysteries and legends of the buildings and the official and secret versions of the history of their occupants. T he t e xt i s co mplemented by a series of splendid photographs that together offer the reader a visit through space and time to the most famous palaces of the world where the lives of royal families and their courts burned bright and where bea uty mi xed w ith po we r." University of Illinois Press, Urbana, 1966, second printing.
237 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "This first book-length intellectual biography and assessment of the career of Edmund Wilson not only is revealing about one of our most eminent men of letters but also a contribution to our literary and cultural history....Literary critic, social reporter, travel writer, poet, playwright, short story writer, novelist, chronicler and historican - (Wilson) perhaps is the last of the great professionals, the genuine 'litterateurs'. Sherm an Paul traces Wilson's life, work, and role in the three cultural phases of recent American history: 1912-29, the 1930's, and the 1940's to the present time....Paul reveals what and who influenced Wilson and vice versa....He also extracts t h e e n d u ring themes from Wilson's works, such as his feeling for human motivation and the common good, his moral touchstone of decency, his psychological approach to history, his notion of creativity and the individual, and his long, but rec e nt ly b i tt er l ov e affair with the United States....Edmund Wilson is an important and interesting figure in our literary history. WHERE STORIES GROW. A TOPELIUS COLLECTION FROM FINLAND., Sperry, Margaret, translator & adaptor. (Zacharias Topelius.)
13 Sperry, Margaret, translator & adaptor. (Zacharias Topelius.) WHERE STORIES GROW. A TOPELIUS COLLECTION FROM FINLAND.
New York Crane Russak 1977 0844811009 / 9780844811000 First American Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good- Maija Karma.
94 pp, 9 3/8" H. B&w illustrations. "In this collection, (Zacharias) Topelius (1818-1898) reveals to us the wide horizons of his fantasy and his deep concern with the ethical principles which guide a sound life, whether it be personal or public. In 'Tikka The Tailor', (he) plays havoc with personal and community class prejudice. 'Little Genius' reveals the immortal spirit of creativity through a series of comic-tragic episodes. In 'Stars On The Snow' our hearts are moved by the absurd ugliness of race prejudice, our minds uplifted by the beauty of the Finnish Winter. 'Where Stories Grow' pokes delicious fun at class snobbishness and ignorance contrasted with the trusting, searching naivete of a young lad. 'The Ice King' (another name for Sampo the Little Lapp) has become one of the most precious tales of Scandinavia. The Arctic landscape with its fierce inhabitants fills the reader with a chill of excitement. 'Butterfly Lover' tells in seemingly simple terms the heartbreak of real and faithful love versus vanity and infidelity. 'Adventures of Sikku' presents a melodramatic description of Cossack warfare and supernatural intervention. 'Lisalill' is a sensitive tale of mystical nature which has deep roots in modern psychiatry, with special reference to Jungian interpretation of dreams. 'Fisherman's Dream', a comic tale, shows the hazards of greed." Very light edge wear to boards. Dust jacket has light edge wear, a few tiny to small edge tears (archivally taped) - one with soft crease, light rubbing and a few tiny scuffs, light browning on spine and flap-folds, very light browning on rear panel.

160 pp, 4to (12" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w and color photographs. "(T)he first comprehensive exploration of Blumenfeld's work, (this book) forms a uniquely detailed study of her development. Dividing her sculpture into eight themed chapters, it concentrates on the major ideas and technical concerns that have preoccupied the artist from the beginning: Two Sides of a Woman; Creation; Metamorphosis; Options; Shadow Figures; Dreams; Souls; and, finally, Mythology. Early and recent works are illustrated side by side, highlighting the aesthetic and conceptual growth which has earned her respect from critics and collectors throughout Europe and the United States. (Upson's) text illuminates Blumenfeld's intense working methods and reveals how her life - divided between Italy, where she works, England, where she now lives, and the United States, where she was born - contributes to her creativity. Each chapter provides an introduction to the individual pieces, a review of Blumenfeld's contribution to twentieth-century sculpture, and concludes with Blumenfeld's own thought-provoking comments on her work." Overlook Press, Woodstock, New York, 1996, first edition.
158 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0879516666 "Taking as his point of departure the sexual obsessions and initiation of the poet John Milton, Paul West elucidates the psychology of an artist who would come to create the most e nduring and compelling work of Western civilization on the subject of Original Sin. But that all comes later. Now young Milton is a Cambridge student, a virgin, intoxicated by the power of words and the stories of myth - and especially th e m y t h o f Amaryllis, the shepherdess in Virgil. When he meets her on a crowded London street, and is led mutely to her odd dwelling, hung with the dripping animals skins and shared with a philosophizing, castrated expert on plague remedies, he en co un te r s a living myth so powerful as to make his earlier learning - his religion, really - pale by comparison. Is she a prostitute? A witch? A myth sprung to life? All that and more, as she invites Milton to use her as his Muse. Bri lli a nt, co nfo und in g, a llegorical, and entertaining, (this book) holds the reader in thrall throughout with both its heady prose and astounding story." Dust jacket has very minor rubbing.
