2 Crane, Walter. OF THE DECORATIVE ILLUSTRATION OF BOOKS OLD AND NEW.
London Bracken 1984 0946495416 / 9780946495412 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good
243 pp, 8vo (8" H). B&w illustrations. "Originally published in 1896, this survey of book illustration is both a comprehensive guide to many facets of early work in the field and important evidence of Victorian taste and the influences which shaped it. Walter Crane, as a leading designer and illustrator, was exceptionally well placed to survey the subject - indeed, some of the finest pieces among over 100 drawings reproduced here are those by Crane himself. Crane begins by describing the artist's role in producing manuscripts and early printed books up to the end of the sixteenth century, giving an account of Italian, French and (particularly) German work. He then moves to the beginning of 'modern illustration', which he dates from the work of Blake, and takes in most of the major Victorian exponents of the art, with examples from such men as Rossetti, Selwyn Image, Arthur Hughes, Laurence Housman, Howard Pyle and Will H. Bradley. The result is a book which has delighted the collector for many years, and is now in increasing demand among art historians and typographers." Faint erased pencil mark on front free endpaper, light browning in margins of pages and to edges of text block, light wrinkling at fore-edge of pages 32 to 44 with two very small tears on fore-edge of pages 37 to 40 that are archivally taped. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

WALTER CRANE AS A BOOK ILLUSTRATOR., Engen, Rodney K.
5 Engen, Rodney K. WALTER CRANE AS A BOOK ILLUSTRATOR.
New York St. Martin's Press 1975 85670170X First American Edition Soft Cover Very Good Walter Crane.
105 pp, 11 1/2" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour reproductions. "Walter Crane, artist of Kensington, was a man of many talents, but possibly best known for his original and charmingly executed designs which made him the leading illustrator of children's books of the Aesthetic Movement period. In the face of the commercial vulgarity and ugliness of Victorian industrialised society, he created a delicate and escapist fairy world which, with its emphasis on spontaneity and mobility of line, and its clever use of background and colour, popularised a completely new style of tasteful book designs, and brought them within the reach of everyone. The influence of Crane's work and his highly novel theories of design make him an important figure in nineteenth century art history. (The author) discusses Crane's style and ideas in a study delightfully arranged after Crane's own rules and book design. He includes nearly 100 illustrations, ranging from nursery rhymes and fairytales to tailpieces and borders, mostly full page as Crane designed them, and 16 in the full colour he helped to pioneer. The extensive annotated catalogue is an invaluable aid for both student and specialist." Previous owner's bookplate on half title page. Interior - previous owner's bookplate on half-title page, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - minor corner wear, small area of delamination at bottom front corner.

TWO TALES. RIP VAN WINKLE AND THE LEGEND OF SLEEPY HOLLOW., Irving, Washington. Introduction by Alexander Eliot.
10 Irving, Washington. Introduction by Alexander Eliot. TWO TALES. RIP VAN WINKLE AND THE LEGEND OF SLEEPY HOLLOW.
San Diego Harcourt Brace Jovanovich 1984 0151922802 / 9780151922802 First Printing Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Barry Moser.
54 pp + b&w plates and "Notes on the Prints", 11" H. "Washington Irving's two tales, 'The Legend of Sleepy Hollow' and 'Rip Van Winkle' have remained a permanent feature on the American literary landscape long after the bulk of his twenty-four volume work has faded into scholarly obscurity. Present-day readers can be grateful that Irving forsook the study of law for literature on the basis of these two works alone. Edgar Allen Poe called him 'the most deservedly eminent among all the pioneers of American literature', and he was accepted as a peer by contemporaries Sir Walter Scott and Lord Byron. Irving kept a sketchbook of his travels, and his painter's eye has attracted such master illustrators as Barry Moser, whose wood engravings were created especially for this volume and who also designed the text." A few tiny minor scuffs to top edge of boards, remainder mark on bottom of text block. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, small ghost sticker mark on fornt panel, tiny scuff and a tiny white dot in title on front panel, minor soiling on rear panel.

Here they will learn, just as th e little boy John did, that airplanes are a lot like birds and a lot like fish too, and they will see how planes are built in a factory. John and his constant companion, the little dog Pogo, were allowed to visit a great airplane plant. T h e i r f r i e nd Mr. Brown let them spend the day there, seeing how a plane grows from a skeleton to its finished state. They rode in the big electric crane that moved high over the factory floor, picking up and delivering plane parts to workm en . T he y w at ch ed t he riveters making everything secure. They found out why an enormously heavy engine can lift a plane into the air and give it the power to fly faster than any bird. Best of all, John and Pogo were invited to ride in a ne w p la ne by th e tes t p ilo t. Inside the cockpit they saw the instrument panel and learned what it was for. It was a grand sky ride, over all too soon. But when they alighted at the factory, Pogo slipped away and got lost - a bad ending for a perf ect da y! Ho w Pogo was fin all y found is the climax of the story which is told as graphically in pictures as in words...." Tiny light mark on page 7, very light edge wear. WALTER CRANE., Spencer, Isobel.
18 Spencer, Isobel. WALTER CRANE.
New York Macmillan 1975 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Walter Crane.
208 pp, 11 1/8" H. B&w and colour illustrations. "More than any other artist of the time Walter Crane appears at the center of the great surge of interest in the decorative arts in the late nineteenth century. He was the driving force behind the Arts and Crafts movement, a children's book illustrator, designer of textiles, tiles, stained glass and ceramics, and a painter who enjoyed a reputation on the Continent as the most popular of the Pre-Raphaelites. Long before his name came to be associated with Kate Greenaway and Randolph Caldecott as the outstanding artists for the nursery, his brightly colored series of Toy Books ensured him a wide reputation. His fame led to commissions for nursery wallpaper, and from there to fabrics, ceramics, mosaic, stained glass, and gesso relief. As President of the Art Workers' Guild Exhibition Society he was a more strenuous advocate of the Arts and Crafts movement than his friend, William Morris, and traveled abroad with his work, specifically helping the formation of an American Arts and Crafts movement. Crane's early paintings embody the romantic medievalism of Rossetti and Burne-Jones, but he soon used poetry and painting as a means to express his growing interest in new philosophical ideas. Ultimately he was converted to socialism - a cause he embraced wholeheartedly, becoming a member of the Social Democratic Federation, the Fabians, and Morris's Socialist League. He gladly made his art servant to his beliefs, producing political cartoons and trade union banners. This is the first major study of Crane's life and work to be published since his death in 1915. Isobel Spencer, a past lecturer in the history of art at Glasgow College of Art, includes in her scholarly study of the man and his work the full range of Crane's many artistic activities." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, small bump at top corners of boards, tiny dent on bottom edge of rear board. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light browning at top inside edge.

WHERE STORIES GROW. A TOPELIUS COLLECTION FROM FINLAND., Sperry, Margaret, translator & adaptor. (Zacharias Topelius.)
19 Sperry, Margaret, translator & adaptor. (Zacharias Topelius.) WHERE STORIES GROW. A TOPELIUS COLLECTION FROM FINLAND.
New York Crane Russak 1977 0844811009 / 9780844811000 First American Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good- Maija Karma.
94 pp, 9 3/8" H. B&w illustrations. "In this collection, (Zacharias) Topelius (1818-1898) reveals to us the wide horizons of his fantasy and his deep concern with the ethical principles which guide a sound life, whether it be personal or public. In 'Tikka The Tailor', (he) plays havoc with personal and community class prejudice. 'Little Genius' reveals the immortal spirit of creativity through a series of comic-tragic episodes. In 'Stars On The Snow' our hearts are moved by the absurd ugliness of race prejudice, our minds uplifted by the beauty of the Finnish Winter. 'Where Stories Grow' pokes delicious fun at class snobbishness and ignorance contrasted with the trusting, searching naivete of a young lad. 'The Ice King' (another name for Sampo the Little Lapp) has become one of the most precious tales of Scandinavia. The Arctic landscape with its fierce inhabitants fills the reader with a chill of excitement. 'Butterfly Lover' tells in seemingly simple terms the heartbreak of real and faithful love versus vanity and infidelity. 'Adventures of Sikku' presents a melodramatic description of Cossack warfare and supernatural intervention. 'Lisalill' is a sensitive tale of mystical nature which has deep roots in modern psychiatry, with special reference to Jungian interpretation of dreams. 'Fisherman's Dream', a comic tale, shows the hazards of greed." Very light edge wear to boards. Dust jacket has light edge wear, a few tiny to small edge tears (archivally taped) - one with soft crease, light rubbing and a few tiny scuffs, light browning on spine and flap-folds, very light browning on rear panel.

London Bracken 1986 0946495793 / 9780946495795 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Kate Greenaway.
301 pp, 9" H. Kate Greenaway "studied art at South Kensington and the Slade, where her fellow students were Lady Butler and Helen Allingham. To start with, she worked as an illustrator and drew Valentine and Christmas cards, as well as black and white pictures for various books. Her great breakthrough came in 1877 when she met Edmund Evans and showed him the collection of drawings and poems that she had assembled. These were published by Evans as 'Under the Window', which was a runaway success and was followed by the many childrens books for which she is best known. Among these are 'Mother Goose', 'The Language of Flowers', 'Marigold Garden', 'A Apple Pie' and 'The Pied Piper of Hamelin', to name but a few. This biography, written by her friends M.H.
