THE REAL FIGARO: THE EXTRAORDINARY CAREER OF CARON DE BEAUMARCHAIS., Cox, Cynthia.
4 Cox, Cynthia. THE REAL FIGARO: THE EXTRAORDINARY CAREER OF CARON DE BEAUMARCHAIS.
New York Coward-McCann 1963 First American Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
212 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w plates. "(A) biography of a brilliant and impudent man living in eighteenth-century France: Caron de Beaumarchais. It was a life of fantastic adventure. Inventor, secret agent, politician, courtier, publisher and supplier of arms to the American colonies, Beaumarchais also wrote plays. Music lovers enchanted by Mozart's 'The Marriage of Figaro" and Rossini's 'The Barber of Seville' remember that they are based on the brilliant comedies of Beaumarchais. Born Pierre Caron in 1732, Beaumarchais was the son of a prosperous Parisian clockmaker. As a child, he was apprenticed to his father, became fairly famous in the field of watchmaking and invented several new and complicated devices. He soon found wider scope by buying an appointment at the Court of Louis XV, where he swiftly rose to the highest favor. The King sent him on a secret mission to Madrid, and he returned to find himself accused of forgery and embezzlement. He became emeshed in a series of legal actions in which he fought vigorously to maintain his honor. Louis XV, meanwhile, sent him secretly to London to stop a blackmailer from publishing scandal about the royal mistress, Madame du Barry. The next King, Louis XVI, gave him two similar missions; the first, to smother a scurrilous attempt to libel Marie-Antoinette, took him to London, Amsterdam and Vienna; the second, to recover some papers of the late King which were of explosive importance, involved him in London with the extraordinary Chevalier d'Eon, a secret agent who, on occasion, wore female dress and was widely (but wrongly) believed to be a woman. While in England, Beaumarchais allied himself with the cause of the American colonies; and when Louis XVI refused to aid the rebels openly, (he) organized a private firm to supply them with arms and munitions as well as ships, with astonishing results. Meanwhile, his play 'The Barber of Seville' had been acclaimed and its sequel, 'The Marriage of Figaro', so audaciously mocked the Government that for five years the King forbade its performance. But when public readings spread its fame, and when the ban was reluctantly lifted, all Paris fought to see it. When the Revolution broke out, Beaumarchais witnessed the storming of the Bastille. In 1792 false rumors caused an hysterical mob to invade his ostentatious mansion; he escaped to a friend's house. Later he was arrested, released through influence of a woman, and after further adventures he found himself a proscribed refugee in Hamburg. He returned to France in 1796 and died there three years later." A few small faint foxing marks on free endpapers, light wrinkling at top/ bottom of spine, very small dint at top edge of front board, tiny foxing marks at edges of illustration pages. Dust jacket has been price clipped, has light edge wear/wrinkling/creasing - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, tiny closed tears at bottom of spine and on rear hinge, minor foxing on edges of flaps.

THEIR DARKEST DAY: THE TRAGEDY OF PAN AM 103 AND ITS LEGACY OF HOPE., Cox, Matthew and Foster, Tom.
5 Cox, Matthew and Foster, Tom. THEIR DARKEST DAY: THE TRAGEDY OF PAN AM 103 AND ITS LEGACY OF HOPE.
Grove Weidenfeld, New York, 1992, first edition.
233 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0802113825 B&w photographs, map, plan. "On December 21, 1988, a small block of plastic explosive tore apart a New York-bound Boeing 747, killing 259 passengers and crew and taking the lives of 11 residents of the tiny Scottish village of Lockerbie. The world followed in horrified fascination as a tale of international terrorism, airline ineptitude, and political gamesmanship unfolded. But another story was lost among the headli nes. Making use of more than three years of research and interviews, (the authors) present the whole picture of the disaster, including the story behind this tragic event: that of the people who died and the family members - who were left to d e a l w ith the devastating aftermath of the explosion. (This) is the shocking tale of the bombing, told through the family members' personal experiences: housewives who became adroit at handling the media; a doctor who became an authority on ex pl os iv es ; a real estate saleswoman who became an expert on terrorist groups; and the many others who sacrificed careers and futures in order to reform airline security and bring the terrorists to justice. The authors trace the history of the Pan Am 10 3 b om bin g, starting with the incidents that incited terrorists to attack and culminating with the indictment of two Libyans in November of 1991." Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top of flap-folds and spine, very light rubbing. Ne ar F ine/ Very Goo d+

6 Cox, Peter A. Foreword by Professor D.M. Henderson. Colour illustrations by Margaret Stones and Rosemary Wise. THE SMALLER RHODODENDRONS.
Timber Press, Beaverton, OR, 1985, first American edition.
271 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0881920142 B&w photographs, maps, drawings, colour illustrations. "The author surveys smaller rhododendrons in their natural habitat, their distribution, ecology and introduction into cultivation, and then moves on to garden cultivation, examining shelter, shade, climate, hardiness and plant associations. The chapter on planting and maintenance covers soil preparation, planting, feeding, pruning, diseases and pests. One of Pete r Cox's strengths is the personal experience he brings to the subject, and this is reflected in a description of the climate and conditions at Glendoik, Perth, where a large percentage of the plants mentioned in the book have been grown with s o m e s u ccess. Personal experience shows also in the detailed species descriptions, the largest part of the book, in which cultivation history, botanical characteristics, and garden value are assessed in great detail. There is of course a cla ss if ic at i on o f the species. Hybrids and hybridization are described more fully than before (the author gives some pointers for future efforts here), and there is an account of propagation techniques. With its list of recommended species and hy bri ds, ga rd ens , n urseries and societies, (this book) offers an immense amount of detailed, up-to-date information, its value enhanced by the practicality readers have come to expect of this author." They could not be tracked: they travelled too high and too fast to be shot down. These were the rocket 'Vengeance Weapons', launched in addition to the flying bombs in retaliation for British and American bombing raids on German cities. Damage inflicted upon London was considerable: 198 were killed by a flying bomb in the Aldwych, hundreds died at New Cross, and over one hundred civilians lost their lives in Smithfield Market. (The author) examines the effects of the V-1 flying bombs and V-2 rockets on a capital still showing the scars of the 1940-41 blitz. 203 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, maps. "The full story of the year Hitler's guided missiles fell on London. Only five minutes from launch to impact - not even enough time to sound an air raid alert. They could not be tracked and they traveled too high and too fast to be shot down. - This is no scenario of World War III, but the story of the development of the Nazi's secret weapons and the devastation they wrought that, given a little more time, might have turned the tide of World War II. Seen through the eyes of the Germans who devised and launched these weapons, as well as the people on the receiving end, here is an unprecedented 'you are there' reconstruction of those times when the death throes of the Nazi empire claimed tens of thousands of Allied civilian casualties. 18 McDonough, James Lee and Connelly, Thomas L. FIVE TRAGIC HOURS: THE BATTLE OF FRANKLIN.
University of Tennessee Press, Knoxville, 1983.
215 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0870493965 B&w photographs, maps. "On a November afternoon in 1864, the weary Gen. John Bell Hood surveyed the army waiting to attack the Federals at Franklin, Tennessee. He gave the signal almost at dusk, and the Confederates rushed forward to utter devastation. This book describes the events and causes of the five-hour battle in gripping detail, particularly focusing on the reasons for such slaughter at a time when the outcom e of the war had already been decided. The genesis of the senseless tragedy, according to (the authors), lay in the appointment of Hood to command the Army of Tennessee. It was his decision to throw a total force of some 20,000 men into an i l l - a d v ised frontal assault against the Union troops. ROAD TO RESISTANCE: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY., Millar, George.

London Bodley Head 1979 0370302052 / 9780370302058 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
412 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w photographs, map. "In this remarkable autobiography, one of the universally recognised and most individual heroes of the Second World War retravels the course of the first thirty-four years of his life, a road that led from his childhood amid two wealthy Scottish families to his war-time exploits as an escaper and as a terrorist in the Resistance. Just as the war came to an end George Millar wrote two books about his experiences, 'Maquis' and 'Horned Pigeon'. Both were best-sellers, but both were bridled by the Official Secrets Act. It is only now that his full story can be told. 'Josh' Millar's real education was accomplished on the hunting field, in France, and at his London base in Jermyn Street, the Cavendish, under the kindly eye of Rosa Lewis. He trained as an architect at Cambridge but then joined the merchant navy as an ordinary seaman. Persuaded to try his hand at journalism, he engineered a scoop aboard the 'Nahlin' and joined the 'Express', where he became one of 'Lord Beaverbrook's young men'. The outbreak of war found him as a member of an elite Paris 'Express' team that included Alan Moorehead, Geoffrey Cox and Sefton Delmer. Evacuated after the fall of France, he joined the Rifle Brigade, was captured in the Western Desert and interned in an Italian POW camp. After many escape attempts he jumped a prison train, spent months being passed secretly from contact to contact within France and finally got away via Gibraltar. Joining the SOE, he parachuted back into Eastern France just before D-Day, his instructions being to organise local Resistance groups and to sabotage German communications. It proved to be, in personal terms, one of the happiest periods of his life." Book slightly cocked, a few minor light foxing marks and minor browning on edges of text block. THE VAGABOND FLEET: A CHRONICLE OF THE NORTH PACIFIC SEALING SCHOONER TRADE., Murray, Peter.
20 Murray, Peter. THE VAGABOND FLEET: A CHRONICLE OF THE NORTH PACIFIC SEALING SCHOONER TRADE.
Victoria, B.C. Sono Nis Press 1988 1550390007 / 9781550390001 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good Maurice Chadwick.
260 pp, 9 1/4" H. Map endpapers. Sepiatone photographs, colour ship portraits. "This gripping history of Canada's unknown seal hunt is a saga of greed and subterfuge, of bumbling diplomatic intrigue that almost led to war. At the same time it is the story of brave men who battled stormy seas in aging ships, many of which had seen better days. Countless lives were lost. Many of the victims were native Indians recruited with their canoes and spears from villages along the west coast of Vancouver Island. The effect of these tragedies on the Indian population and the economic impact of the fur seal hunt on their way of life is examined here for the first time. Threaded throughout the book are stories of the colourful characters who skippered and manned the sealing schooners. After years of acrimonious negotiations, a four-nation treaty was finally signed in 1911 which saved the fur seals from extinction. It was a landmark agreement in the conservation of marine life which set the pattern for a number of other international treaties over the years." Dust jacket has small wrinkle at top edge of rear flap, very light rubbing/soiling on rear panel.
