In a wide variety of reminiscences the author reconstructs the matelot's life, whether in corvette, battleship or destroyer, or whether as Royal Navy, Reservist, RNVR or Hostilities Only; he writes both of the pleasures of shipboard life and of the often harsh discipline meted out for lapses from the strict naval code. There were happy ships and unhappy ships, lucky ships and unlucky ships, and he instances experiences from them. Throughout the book he links the experiences of the seamen to the great actions of the war taking place around them, which are thus seen not from the viewpoint of the captain or admiral but the men who fired the guns, the engineers, etc. Thus we get new perspectives on the Battle of the River Plate, Convoy PQ17, the invasion of Sicily, the Battle of Sirte, and many other actions." 6 Easton, Alan. Foreword by Rear-Admiral K.L. Dyer. 50 NORTH: AN ATLANTIC BATTLEGROUND. (CANADA'S ATLANTIC BATTLEGROUND.)
Toronto Ryerson Press 1963 First Edition. Hard Cover Very Good Fair Inscribed By Author
287 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H). Inscribed on front free endpaper: "Archie Whelan / This describes a very different / environment in which you / & I worked together, but I / hope you'll like reading about it. / Your old friend / Alan Easton. / March 1963." B&w illustrations. "In this exciting book, Lieutenant-Commander Alan Easton of the Royal Canadian Navy Reserve tells of his experiences during the Second World War. The first ship he commanded was a corvette with faulty engines. His second corvette saw convoy action and battled both German U-boats and bad weather. Then Easton was given command of a destroyer which saw action in the English Channel on the day of the Normandy invasion. Easton gives a thrilling and detailed account of this successful naval engagement. But '50 North' is as much concerned with everyday life on board small warships as it is with the Atlantic battle as a whole. For this reason (it) is the first Canadian book of its kind. Easton is able to portray with vividness the seamen under him, their minor quarrels as well as the more important problems which occasionally develop between the crew and the commanding officers." Very light browning to edges of text block, small bump to top of front hinge, minor erinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has old tape repairs for large and small tears with creases, a few small edge chips, light browning, rubbing and soiling - mainly on rear panel, now protected in a mylar sleeve.

VICTORY IN THE ST. LAWRENCE: CANADA'S UNKNOWN WAR., Essex, James W.
7 Essex, James W. VICTORY IN THE ST. LAWRENCE: CANADA'S UNKNOWN WAR.
Erin, Ontario Boston Mills Press 1984 0919822568 / 9780919822566 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
160 pp, 11 1/4" H. Map endpapers (showing locations of ships torpedoed in Gulf and River of St. Lawrence and Canada's Coastal Waters), b&w photographs, drawings. "The sailor next to me reached into his topcoat pocket and hurriedly proferred a crumpled photograph. I recognized it as the military funeral of 1942 at the tiny Anglican Church just down the road. It was the burial of a seaman from the HMCS 'Charlottetown', one of several who had been rescued, only to die of wounds later. He was killed in Canada by the Nazis. This book in a real sense, then, is his story and the story of hundreds of others who perished because of the German U-boats in the St. Lawrence. As Cmdr. George Bernard, Naval Officer in Command, Gaspe from 1943 to the war's end said in later years: 'In 1942, marauding U-Boats entered the Gulf of St. Lawrence and did a great deal of damage. They roamed the Gulf and River St. Lawrence at will and were seldom opposed. They sank Canadian warships and valuable merchant vessels almost with impunity.' According to Bernard, it was for this reason that Canadian authorities played down the episode. They were prepared to accept the consequences because warships which might have attacked the U-boats invading our inland waters were wanted more urgently elsewhere. This was 'Victory in the St. Lawrence' - initially for the German U-boat: Canada's turn would come next. But what happened to both remained locked in the memories of the participants only now being revealed long years after the war ended. This was 'Canada's Unknown War'." Minor wrinkle at top of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing.

12 Macintyre, Donald. THE BATTLE OF THE ATLANTIC. BRITISH BATTLE SERIES.
London B. T. Batsford 1961 First Edition Hard Cover Good+ Good-
208 pp, 8vo (8 15/16" H). "The momentous nature of the Battle of the Atlantic, a struggle whose outcome was in the balance for over three years, cannot be exaggerated. Had the Germans succeeded in establishing a decisive mastery in the Atlantic, Britain would have been deprived of the essential American supplies - above all, arms and food - on which she depended for the continuance of the war abroad and for her own day-to-day survival; nor, later could the Americans have given their vital support. The story of how, instead, the Germans were defeated in the Atlantic, is a complicated and exciting one which Captain Donald Macintyre, a naval historian who himself played an active part in the battle, is well qualified to tell. Not only does he analyse the strategic issues, above all the importance of the convoy system and of continuous air-cover, he also describes the battle from the viewpoint of the participants themselves. The long drawn-out duel between escort and U-boat is made vivid by quotations from the log-books of some of the ablest escort-commanders, such as Captain Walker and Lieutenant-Commander Gretton, and from the combat-reports of the German U-boat 'aces', Prien, Kretschmer and Schepke. Complementing these eyewitness accounts, nearly 50 unfamiliar photographs, drawn from German as well as British sources, make the courage and endurance of all those who fought in the Atlantic the more immediate; the strategic and tactical aspects of the battle are likewise clarified by the specially prepared maps and diagrams." Light to moderate edge wear to boards, very light browning to edges of boards, very small light stain on title page, very soft corner crease on first few pages, light erasure mark on rear pastedown. Dust jacket is price clipped, has light to moderate edge wear - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap folds, a few small scratches and scuffs, a few small edge tears with old tape repair, small waterstain on inside of spine, browning at edges, a few brown stains on inside.

Toronto Samuel Stevens, Hakkert, 1975 0888665660 / 9780888665669 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
116 pp, large 8vo (9 5/8" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "Canada provided the third largest allied navy in the Second World War. The Royal Canadian Navy, born amidst controversy over its very existence just before the First World War grew from small beginnings with the acquisition of the cruisers Rainbow and Niobe to radical expansion in the 1940's to fight the battle of the Atlantic. The RCN has always been a wartime service: its first submarines were bought, not by Ottawa, but by British Columbia, in the tumultuous days immediately preceding the outbreak of war in 1914. Its last aircraft carrier, the Bonaventure, left commission despite a costly refit as the tensions of the Cold War receded. (This) is the story of the ships of the RCN giving a brief history of their active service and presenting a visual account of Canada's Navy in dramatic pictures of Canada's own ships." Slight browning in margins of pages, light browning to edges of text block, light waviness to top/bottom edges of text block. Dust jacket has light edge wear, light rubbing to surfaces, a few small soft creases at edges.

Toronto University of Toronto Press 1994 0802005888 / 9780802005885 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
326 pp, 9 1/4" H. Map endpapers, b&w photographs. "(B)egins with a thorough re-evaluation of the RCN's role in the decisive Allied Atlantic victory over the U-boats in 1943. It presents some startling new conclusions about why the Canadians were marginalized in this the greatest of all anti-submarine offensives. Most studies of the Atlantic war end at this point, but 1943 is just the prologue to Milner's new book. Historians have ignored anti-submarine warfare in1944-5 because it was highly technical, undramatic and of no consequence to the outcome of the war itself. But the war against the U-boat was unrelenting. Schnorkels, improved batteries, radar detectors, and complex inshore water conditions made it difficult to find and sink late-war U-boats. By 1944 the Germans were building new, high-speed true submarines, against which the Allies had not effective countermeasures. This book is the story of how the RCN tackled these elusive enemies, how it fought to master the basics of modern anti-submarine warfare, and how its efforts fit into the larger Allied campaign." Minor edge wear to boards. Dust jacket has very light edge wear, light rubbing, light 2" scratch on rear panel.

186 pp, 9 1/4" H. Maps. "The corvette 'La Vaillante' was built in Bayonne in 1796, four years after the outbreak of the French Revolutionary Wars. In 1798, she was captured by Captain Sir Edward Pellew, renamed the 'Danae' and given a new young captain, Lord Proby. In March 1800, there was consternation in London when The Times reported the French recapture of the 'Danae' following a mutiny among her crew. Dudley Pope has pieced together the story of the mutiny from British documents and the French naval archives at Brest, where the file is labelled 'Le Diable Lui-meme' - The Devil Himself. How did the French regain possession of their captured corvette? Why did some of Lord Proby's crew risk hanging by staging a mutiny? What happened to the captain after the French took him prisoner? What became of the guilty men? What was the role of the Americans on board the ship? The whole curious story is told by an expert on the naval history of those brutal years."
