1 Ashe, Geoffrey. FROM CAESAR TO ARTHUR.
London Collins 1960 First Edition Hard Cover Good+ Good-
320 p, 8 1/2" H. "(A) study of the life and career of the historical King Arthur in so far as it can be traced through early documents and remains. (The author) begins with the decay of Roman power and its slow disappearance from Britain, while invasion, anarchy and warring small kingdoms take its place. Then comes a reversal of fortune without parallel in the dissolving Empire, when a western Christian military chieftain stems the Saxon tide and imposes a long truce. In this unique recovery, it is suggested, lies a previously unnoticed clue to the whole development of the British monarchy. The kingdom finally created by Alfred the Great and his successors turns out to have been decisively affected by the earlier achievement of Arthur and the failure of the first Saxon attempt at conquest. Piecing together his fragments of history to form the most vivid possible whole, Mr. Ashe explains how the great tradition of Arthur flowed into the Arthurian Legend, and shows how that legend, fantastic and romantic as it is, nevertheless embodies a profound historical insight." Very light edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, moderate browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling, a few tiny and small edge tears, a few tiny scuffs on spine, minor edge browning, protected in a mylar sleeve.

2 Bennett, Geoffrey. Preface by Rodney M. Bennett. NAVAL BATTLES OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR.
London Penguin 2001 0141390875 / 9780141390871 Reprint Soft Cover Very Good -
310 pp, 8vo (8 7/16" H). B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "With the call to action stations of August 1914, the Royal Navy faced its greatest test since the time of Nelson. Geoffrey Bennett's classic history of the Great War at sea combines graphic and stirring accounts of all the principal naval engagements - battles overseas, in home waters and, for the first time, under the sea - with analysis of the strategy and tactics of both sides. He brings these sea battles dramatically to life, and confirms the Allied navies' vital contribution to victory. In his words, 'Though the titantic struggle on the Western Front dominated the strategy of the Allies, it was their Navies, of which the British was immeasurably the strongest, that in the end brought Germany to her knees.' Illustrated with maps, plans and contemporary photographs, this detailed, immaculately researched account is the authoritative history of an often overlooked but hugely important aspect of the First World War." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very light edge wear, one crease down spine, very tiny crease at top corner of covers, small soft crease and multiple small line indentations at bottom corner of rear cover, minor rubbing/indentation on covers.

4 Blake, Steve and Lloyd, Scott. With John Baldock. THE KEYS TO AVALON: THE TRUE LOCATION OF ARTHUR'S KINGDOM REVEALED.
Shaftesbury, Dorset Element 2000 1862047359 / 9781862047358 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
302 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w maps, family trees, decorations, colour and b&w photographs. "(The authors) unearth the truth about King Arthur and the magical realm of Avalon. They reveal how, through their investigations, they traced original key documents which had lain neglected for centuries. By combining the ancient sources with an intimate knowledge of the British landscape, they have managed to cast new light on the Dark Ages. Every piece of the puzzle they have put together fits - perfectly. The authors prove that the stories about Arthur and Avalon are rooted firmly within historical events which took place within a precise geographical setting in Wales; they also expose how and to what ends Arthurian legend has been hijacked for political gain throughout the ages. By establishing the historical facts about Arthur, his knights and the exact location of Avalon, (they) rip away the tissue of fabrication and fairy-tale that has shrouded the true origins of the British people and of anyone claiming ancestry from these isles." Book is very slightly cocked. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very minor edge wear, minor browning at inside edges, minor rubbing.

THE CELTIC LEGEND OF THE BEYOND., Braz, Anatole Le. Translated by Derek Bryce.
6 Braz, Anatole Le. Translated by Derek Bryce. THE CELTIC LEGEND OF THE BEYOND.
Llanerch, Felinfach, 1991, reprint.
108 pp, 8vo (8 1/16" H), soft cover. ISBN 0947992065 "This unusual and fascinating book includes stories of premonitions, omens, magic books, strange rites, wakes, ghosts and exorcisms. Many of the stories are based on events which took place, in cluding personal experiences. Other stories are second hand or further removed, and the storytellers have given them an archaic and legendary quality. Many of the beliefs and customs described in this book once existed in identical or an a l o g o u s f o rm in Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Cornwall and the Isle of Man, but the Celtic cult of the dead survived into modern times in its most complete form in Armorican Brittany. Anatole Le Braz assembled a vast collection of this materia l on t he s ub je c t in to a logical and coherent whole entitled 'La Legende de la Mort....' In making an abridged translation, Dr Bryce has avoided much of the repetition that occurred inthe original work." London Victor Gollancz 1975 0575019689 / 9780575019683 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
192 pp, 8" H. Red boards with gilt lettering on spine. "When Cedric Tremain is charged with murder-ing his father, by booby-trapping his fishing boat, all the locals agree that this wouldn't be his sort of crime. But the case against him is strong: he has the motive, the opportunity, the know-how; and there's some hard circumstantial evidence against him. So he is arrested. But there are things about the case which Chief Superintendent Wycliffe doesn't like. So he keeps nosing around. And his investigations lead him into the details of another murder case, one that is now twenty years old. Is it possible that there is some relationship between the two cases, and if so what? As Wycliffe, that most unorthodox of detectives, probes into the present and the past, our own suspicions and assumptions are being constantly challenged." Faint tanning to pastedowns and half of each free endpaper, four page leaves are slightly roughly opened at top edge - page leaf 85/86 has a few very small and tiny edge tears and tiny chips in top margin only. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has minor wrinkling at top edge of rear flap, minor tanning on inside of flaps.

WYCLIFFE AND THE SCHOOLGIRLS., Burley, W.J.
8 Burley, W.J. WYCLIFFE AND THE SCHOOLGIRLS.
London Victor Gollancz 1976 0575020482 / 9780575020481 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
191 pp, 8" H. Red boards with gilt lettering on spine. "Debbie Joyce, a young cabaret singer, is found strangled. A week later, in the same city, Elaine Bennett, a nurse, is similarly murdered. Immediately the press raise the alarm that a psychopathic killer is on the loose. But Chief Superintendent Wycliffe is not convinced that this is the answer. While police precautions are greatly increased, he quietly goes his own way, probing into the possibility, however remote, that there is some logical connection - logical at least to the murderer - between the two deaths. His absorbing investigation takes him into the past of the dead women, and finally to a 'community holiday' which a group of schoolgirls spent together. And nasty little beasts some of them were, playing a cruel trick on the teacher in charge and on one of the other girls. Can this remote escapade have triggered murder in the present? And if so, why and how? And are there other murders to come? Wycliffe learns a lot about the strangeness of human nature during his exploration of the world of the schoolgirls, and the narrative builds up to a tense climax." Faint tanning to pastedowns and half of each free endpaper, two very tiny edge tears at top corner of page leaf 37/38. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has some minor edge wrinkling, minor tanning on inside of flaps and at top inside edge.

THE CANAL BUILDERS., Burton, Anthony.
9 Burton, Anthony. THE CANAL BUILDERS.
London Eyre Methuen 1972 413284107 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good+
230 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w photographs, reproductions, maps. "(T)he story of the men who, in little more than half a century from 1760, created a network of canals that revolutionised transport and represent-ed the greatest achievement in civil engineering in Britain since the Romans. In those few years between the opening of the Bridgewater Canal in 1761 and the coming of the railways early in the nine-teenth century, tens of thousands of men were involved in canal construction. They came from all classes of society - from aristocratic promoters like the Duke of Bridgewater to Irish peasants who came to dig. This book is the first to deal exclusively with the canal builders and to try to place them in the context of the social, economic, and political world of the eighteenth century, and draws skilfuly on contemporary documents, newspapers, pamphlets, and letters." Burton follows the story through the promoters (like Josiah Wedgwood) and the financiers, to the engineers (including Brindley, Telford, Rennie, Jessop & Smeaton) and the 'navvies' who actually did the digging, "from Cornwall to the Highlands of Scotland". Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, very light edge wear, a few very light rub lines on front board. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has very light edge wear/wrinkling, fading to spine color (title is still dark and legible), two small edge tears archivally taped, minor browning to inside top/bottom edges.

"Southern Branch Lines were some of the most picturesque in the British Isles, passing over woodlands, over downs and to holiday se aside resorts. In spite of the Southern Railway's electrification policy, the Southern Branch line was the one place where steam could be seen with a variety of motive power before the coming of the diesel multiple units. Green was the p r o m i n e n t c olour of the Southern, on the stations, the coaches, the locomotive and even in the countryside around. Many Southern Branch Line trains were steam hauled long into the '50s and early '60s and the scenes in this book show this in t he f in al y ea rs of steam power." Leo Cooper, London, 1970, first edition.
122 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0850520363 B&w photographs, reproductions. "In (this volume) we have a regiment that began life as Marines at the time when the Royal Navy first penetrated into the Mediterranean; we have an other regiment, quite separate at that time from the first, taking part as the only complete unit in the otherwise best forgotten foray into the Highlands after Bonny Prince Charlie that ended disastrously at Prestonpans; and we have the crow n i n g g l ory of the defence of the Residency at Lucknow during the Indian Mutiny. This in addition to participation in the American War of Independence, a reminder of which is still worn by all light infantrymen in their cap badge; the Peninsul ar W ar a n d Wa terloo and the wars in the Crimea, in Egypt and in South Africa. The story goes into two world wars and in the exploits here recorded it was west country men who, particularly in the second of them, provided the backbone of the D .C. L.I .'s ba tt al ion s. A regimental history would be a dull affair were it not for the records and diaries that past members have left behind them. The D.C.L.I. is particularly fortunate in its 'other rank' chroniclers and Privates Waterfiel d an d Me tcal fe, Cor por al R yder and Sergeant Philip are a quartet the interest and pungency of whose anecdotes it would be hard to beat...." Includes the music and lyrics for the Regimental March 'One and All' and lyrics for 'Trelawny'. Fain t cig arett e odo r, l ight wri nkli ng at top/bottom of spine, browning to edges of text block. ECCENTRIC BRITAIN: A GUIDE TO BRITAIN'S BIZARRE BUILDINGS, PECULIAR PLACES AND OFFBEAT EVENTS., Hannigan, Des.
16 Hannigan, Des. ECCENTRIC BRITAIN: A GUIDE TO BRITAIN'S BIZARRE BUILDINGS, PECULIAR PLACES AND OFFBEAT EVENTS.
London New Holland 2004 1843307316 / 9781843307310 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+ Chris Coe, photography.
160 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H). Profusely illustrated with colour photographs, maps. "The British have always held the franchise on eccentricity. Throughout this fascinating offshore and off-centre island - from Cornwall's spectacular Land's End to Scotland's lonely northern outpost of John o' Groats - the dramatic and magnificent story of Britain has always been punctuated by the quirky, the irreverent and the downright dotty. (This book) explores every quirky corner of the nation from the outrageous expose of Dorset's Cerne Abbas giant, outlined in chalk on a green hillside in all its rude glory, to chasing cheeses down helter-skelter hillsides in Cambridgeshire. Farther north things may get colder, but they're still crazy with it. There's the highest pub in England at Yorkshire's Tan Hill and a Lake District lighthouse that is miles from the sea. Wales and Scotland are not far behind either when it comes to mad-hattery. Where else would you find people eager to submerge themselves for fun in a freezing Welsh bog? And how about Scotland, with a pineapple-shaped house and the world's best worst poet? Organized by area with maps that show the location of every bizarre building, peculiar place and offbeat event and illustrated throughout with superb specially commissioned photography, this book will entertain, enlighten and more than often raise the odd eyebrow." Light edge wear at top/bottom of spine and at corners, small bump on fore-edge of both boards. Hutchison, London, 1951, first edition.
232 pp, 8vo (8 1/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "....the most exciting, most illuminating and probably the most profound study of post-war England yet published. A journey through the country - westwards to Cornwall, north to Lancashire and Yor kshire - has been used as a framework for the real theme of the book: the social-economic revolution of England. Every single social group is presented and few people know them better than the author, who combines the precision of the tra i n e d s o c i o logist with the insight of the born novelist. He employs a contrast technique full of surprise and excitement. From an aristocratic mansion he leads us to a London slum; from the emotional life of the debutante to the emotional li fe o f t he y ou ng d ock-worker; from the problems of the new Oxford undergraduate to the problems of the new coal-miner; from the struggles of provincial youth to the struggles of the Displaced Person in our midst; from the open doubts of th e m idd le cl as s t o t he tra gic secret of many a new writer....presents a valuable, and at the same time vastly entertaining picture of the new England." Toronto Queen's Printer 1984 0774389648 / 9780774389648 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
668 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "The OPP came into existence (in 1909) with a total strength of fifty-one men, of whom forty-four were constables deployed across the vast province. By the end of World War I in 1918, only twenty-six constables were still serving with the force, but returning veterans were sought for enlistment with the provincials and the force grew, assuming every-increasing responsibilities for policing the province. Liquor law enforcement during the rumrunning days of the 1920s, and the creation of a highway patrol in 1930 played major parts in the evolution of the provincial police. The story of the OPP includes tales of murder, sabotage, corruption, and political influences. There were relief expeditions to the north in the wake of devastating forest fires, and confrontations with hoboes, harvesters, and loafers. Violent crimes, jail-breaks, war services, and industrial disputes all had to be contended with, and not a few members of the provincial police were killed in the performance of their duties over the years. 'Hepburn's Private Army' and 'Drew's Gestapo' gave rise to much criticism of the provincials, and embarrassing Royal Commissions did little to enhance the image or the morale of Ontario's finest. Despite the challenges to its continued existence, the OPP has emerged today as one of the finest, best equipped, and most brilliantly led police forces in the world." Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top edge..

Ottawa University of Ottawa Pres 1989 0776602772 / 9780776602776 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good+
237 pp, oblong (9 1/4" H x 12 1/4" D). Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour photographs, repro-ductions. "The viceregal residences of the Canadian provinces mirror the idiosyncrasies of their inhabitants, and the tastes and talents of the architects, builders, gardeners, furniture makers and decorators who created them. In 'Ample Mansions' you will see the finest - and sometimes the worst - of Canadian style. There's no shortage of pomp in our viceregal history, but Dr. Hubbard's scholarly and sprightly text goes behind the scenes too, where there's plenty of room for rot and mildew, plugged drains and erratic staff. There are ample mansions crumbling from neglect, ample mansions consumed in conflagrations, ample mansions falling victim to political spats - and ample mansions rising in new splendour." Fine book. Dust jacket has three small areas of minor rubbing on rear panel.

London Gollancz 1975 0575019565 / 9780575019560 First British Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
207 pp, 8vo (8" H). "(A) brilliant collection of Michael Innes short stories about the varied adventures of his great detective, Sir John Appleby, Commissioner of Metropolitan Police (and, later, retired). Appleby has to cope with many diabolically ingenious modes of crime: a faked poltergeist; an exploding antique; a balloon to remove a weapon; an arrow to obliterate a trail. Many of the clues that lead to solutions are equally remarkable: a shubunkin in a pocket; the overpainting of a portrait; photocopies that have stuck together; a broken wine-glass; a coat worn inside-out; a London taxi-cab on the Simplon Pass. And the plots involve elaborate double bluffs: suicides designed to look like murders; X disguised as Y disguised as X; and in 'The Memorial Service' the tangle of impersonation develops into a triple - or is it a quadruple? - bluff." Contents: The Appleby File: The Ascham; Poltergeist; The Fishermen; The Conversation Piece; Death By Water; A Question of Confidence; The Memorial Service.
