THE ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS SOCIAL HISTORY OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR., Bishop, James. Foreword by Lord Blake.
5 Bishop, James. Foreword by Lord Blake. THE ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS SOCIAL HISTORY OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR.
London Angus & Robertson 1982 0207148260 / 9780207148262 First Edition Very Good Very Good-
144 pp, 10 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w reproductions of photographs, drawings, advertisements. "The First World War, which claimed the lives of so many men on the battlefields of the Western Front, also profoundly affected the character and everyday life of the nation at home. It was the first 'total war' and the whole country contributed to the war effort. The unrelenting demands of the trenches eventually forced the Government to introduce conscription while, for those left behind, the state intervened more and more in the lives of its citizens. Hardships increased: food and fuel were in very short supply and rationing had to be imposed in 1916. The civilian population was also directly involved in the hostilities with the bombing raids of zeppelins and aeroplanes. But the war did bring some changes for the better. The salaried classes grew, working conditions improved and the war also helped liberate women who replaced men in factories and public services, and joined the armed forces. When the armistice finally came, in November 1918, Lloyd George promised 'a fit country for heroes to live in' - though the reality proved to be less Utopian. The Illustrated London News continued to publish throughout the First World War and was supplemented by The Illustrated War News. These magazines provided a vivid pictorial chronicle of contemporary events and enable us, today, to enter into the spirit of a bygone era. (The author) has written a fascinating and fully-documented account of these momentous years, complemented by over 200 pictures from the original issues." Light edge wear to boards. Dust jacket has one tiny edge tear, light foxing at top & bottom inside edges, very light edge wrinkling, a few tiny dents and faint line indentations on front panel.

427 pp, 8vo (9 1/4" H). "Through war, depression, and social upheaval, the first half of the twentieth century was a period of unprecedented turbulence in Canada. In this lively and perhaps contentious survey, (the authors) explore the political and economic forces that shaped this era of change. Beginning at the turn of the century, they consider the status of Canada in the empire and the world, the burgeoning growth of its economy, and the development of social and labour problems, up to the eruption of war in 1914. They discuss the political currents running through Canada during two wars, the interwar economic boom and depression, and the plans for post-war reconstruction, and assess the impact of these and other events on Canada's political, economic, social, and cultural institutions." By the end of the Liberal regime in 1957 the country had undergone immense growth in human and material resources. The experience of the Second World War had been followed by participation in the Korean War and ten years of the Cold War. The Great Depression had given way to a boom which had continued through the exchange crisis, serious inflation and minor recessions. In addition, new life had been generated in the arts. "Magic bright and dark swept through the land of Zelharri, claiming the Duke's life in a pool of Hell-Light. Now his son Aletto and daughter Lialla fear for the future of their people. Their murderous uncle has married their mother to steal the throne from Aletto. His only hope to reclaim it is by gathering powerful allies through the magic of the Night-Threads. A magic his sister barely controls. Three ordinary people have been summoned from a place called Earth, in a land known as California: Jennifer, a hard-working junior lawyer who doesn't believe in magic - Robyn, her hard-drinking, hard-living sister - and Robyn's son, Chris, a high school senior with a level head and a smart mouth. These three have been chosen to fight in a dangerous battle of unbelievable magic. A magic they must believe in - or die." 2. The Two in Hiding - 294 pp, 1991, ISBN 0441580866. "Strange and wondrous rumors spread through the kingdom of Rhadaz concerning the young duke Aletto and his sister Lialla, fled from the household of their uncle Jadek, who had ruled the land of Zelharri since the suspicious death of his brother years before. They traveled, it was said, with three outlanders who claimed to be from a place called Earth: a beautiful woman named Jennifer, who had become apprentice to Lialla in the use of the magic of the Night-Threads; the young man known as Chris, who was teaching the weakling Aletto odd but effective ways of fighting. And, it was whispered, the third was an older woman who had the gift of shapeshifting. A talent rare - and dangerous." 3. One Land, One Duke - 324 pp, 1992, ISBN 0441580874. "Whispers of magic and intrigue reached Podhru, grand capital of Rhadaz. It was said that Aletto, rightful duke of Zelharri, sought to reclaim the throne stolen from him. And that the warrior Dahven had escaped the doom prepared for him by his treacherous brothers. For too long has the Emperor stood apart from the conflict, but now the people cry out for 'One Land, One Duke'. The time for hiding is over. At last, the healing power of the Night-Threads stands against demonic Hell-Light while the destiny of all who live hangs in the balance. And three ordinary visitors from Earth must use their newfound talents - as sorceress, shapeshifter, and soldier - to rescue a world that is now even their own. 4. The Craft of Light - 280 pp, 1993, ISBN 0441580882. "Four years have passed, and the three (visitors from Earth) have settled into a comfortable routine. 132 pp, 10" H. "(Describes) the deveopment and careers of the last of the fighting biplanes, the little Gloster Gladiator, which carried something of the First World War into that second epic struggle; that indomitable trio of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps fighters, the Wildcat, Hellcat and Corsair, which destroyed the myth of Japanese aerial invincibility founded by the Zero-Sen; the fighter versions of the Junkers Ju 88 whose nocturnal depredations in the R.A.F.'s bomber stream over the Third Reich were so impressive at one period of the War that the abandoning of large-scale night attacks on German targets was seriously considered; the highly manoeuvrable Macchi C.202 Folgore with its beautifully co-ordianted controls - a pilot's aeroplane in every respect; the Japanese Army's equivalent of the Zero-Sen, the Nakamima Ki.43 Hayabusa, and its successor, the Ki.84 Hayate which could out-climb and out-manoeuvre the most advanced versions of the Mustang and Thunderbolt; Heinkel's superlative He 219 night fighter which, but for ministerial muddle and confusion, would have provided the Allies with some serious headaches. IN FOR A PENNY, IN FOR A POUND: THE ADVENTURES AND MISADVENTURE OF A WIRELESS OPERATOR IN BOMBER COMMAND., Hewer, Howard. Foreword by Group Captain Kenneth McDonald. Introduction by Flight Lieutenant William H. Dixon.
15 Hewer, Howard. Foreword by Group Captain Kenneth McDonald. Introduction by Flight Lieutenant William H. Dixon. IN FOR A PENNY, IN FOR A POUND: THE ADVENTURES AND MISADVENTURE OF A WIRELESS OPERATOR IN BOMBER COMMAND.
Stoddart, Toronto, 2000.
272 pp, large 8vo (9 5/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 077373273X B&w photographs, maps. "In 1940, 19-year-old Howard Hewer dreamed of being the next Billy Bishop, of piloting Spitfires or Hurricanes over Europe. His dream was shattered when he was selected instead for a career as a wireless operator. But his thirst for adventure would certainly be satisfied. He was not to be a pilot, but he would play a vital role in air operations in World War II over Europe and the Mediterrane an. Hewer's life in Bomber Command was never dull, and almost always bittersweet. During training, he fell out of a Fairey Battle, and held on by only one foot high over Lake Erie. In London, he survived a run-in with the infamous 'Piccad i l l y C o m mandos', then dug for victims of an air raid in the rubble of a dance hall. But Hewer found life in the belly of Wellington, or 'Wimpy', bombers the most hazardous of all. He and his crew of 218 and 148 Squadrons flew important nigh t op er at i on s ov er Germany and North Africa, dropping their deadly payloads while dodging enemy flak. All the while, Hewer was busy at the radio controls identifying his Wimpy's position and detecting false codes from Axis operators, who were al way s o n t he pr ow l t o lure unsuspecting Allied bombers into landing on enemy airfields. On perhaps his bravest mission of the war, as a driver for the RAF in North Africa, Hewer drove deep behind enemy lines, where he exchanged fire with I tal ian troo ps. An othe r t ime, in Suez, he became bored while on medical leave, and joined on as a wireless operator on another operation. Soon after takeoff, the plane took flak and crash landed on the desert floor. Hewer was trapped, his le gs c rush ed ag ains t hi s rad io, the e ngines of the plane threatening to explode. At times comical, at others tragic, Howard Hewer's stirring story will leave a lasting imprint on the memory of its readers." Dust jacket has minor rubbing. Nea r Fin e/Nea r Fine
