BABAYAGA., Barlow, Toby.
3 Barlow, Toby. BABAYAGA.
New York Farrar, Straus & Giroux 2013 0374107874 / 9780374107871 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good+ Dust jacket art by Matt Buck.
383 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). "Paris, 1959" The City of Light is the center of the universe. Expats flock to exercise their loftiest ambitions and most libertine fantasies, and maybe dabble in a bit of Cold War spycraft along the way. Refugees from the East - a few babayagas among them - arrive to start their lives anew. The world's greatest city is as cosmopolitan and alive as it's ever been. Will is just another young American seeking his fortune in Paris - except that the ad agency that employs him is a front for the CIA. He's been in the city a few years now and is beginning to sense that his time is up - and he still hasn't figured out Parisian girls. Zoya is a beautiful young woman wandering 'les boulevards', sad-eyed, coming off a bad breakup. In fact, she impaled her ex on a spike. Zoya, it turns out, has been a beautiful young woman for hundreds of years; she and her far more traditionally witchy companion, Elga, have been thriving unnoticed amid the bloody froth of Europe's wars. Inspector Vidot is a hardworking Paris police detective who cherishes quiet nights at home. But when he follows a lead from a grisly murder to the warren of a frightened old woman, he undergoes a radical transformation. Oliver is a patrician, fun-loving American who has come to Paris to start a literary journal with the help of some friends, who ask only a few discreet favors in return. When a few of his dodgier acquaintances start dropping dead, he realizes he's in well over his head, though he remains fairly confident that it's nothing a well-made cocktail can't fix. A few chance encounters, a bit of romantic chemistry, a chorus of angry ghosts, a strung-out jazzman or three, a weaponized LSD program, and a cache of rifles buried in the catacombs - those are approximately half the ingredients of 'Babayaga'. But then there's something even more unexpected that Toby Barlow has smuggled in, too: a daring, moving exploration of love and morality." Dust jacket has soft wrinkle at bottom of rear hinge, small blank label across barcode.

8 Greenway, John L. THE GOLDEN HORNS: MYTHIC IMAGINATION AND THE NORDIC PAST.
Athens University of Georgia Press 1977 0820303844 / 9780820303840 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
226 pp, 9 5/16" H. "As an introduction to modern myth, (this book) masterfully encompasses a wide circle of historical and literary materials. John Greenway examines first the nature of time in the mythic consciousness, then the role of the Nordic past as a myth of origins from the Renaissance through the romantics. Only in the various forms of myth can man find identity, the author argues, and he sees the varying images of the Viking past as unconscious attempts by northern nations to legitimize their own values. Central to (his) methodology is his discussion of the sacred in language not itself sacred and the failure of modern myth to make the primitive distinction between the sacred and the profane. The author establishes the theoretical base of his discussion by examining the nature of time in mythic consciousness in terms of Norse myth. After suggesting several ways in which the mythic apprehension of reality conditioned medieval Icelandic narrative, (he) elaborates on the dialectical relationship between myth and reason, using as an example the conversion of the Germanic tribes to Christianity. Maintaining that myth is neither true nor false but always either expressive or not, Greenway traces the origin, rise, and fall of two great modern myths of northern birth: Swedish Gothicism in the seventeenth century and the Ossianic craze of the eighteenth. Both myths, one social, the other literary, illustrate the singular tension in the modern mind between mythic imperatives and the impulse to de-mythologize. Finally, 'The Golden Horns' traces the romantic belief in a 'new mythology' which synthesizes myth and reason from its early acceptance through its eventual repudiation. In his conclusions about the state of myth in the modern world, Greenway postulates that we have inherited the romantic respect for myth as truth but lack the romantic faith in transcendence necessary to establish myth's reality. We are trapped in a physical and moral world which we, as romantics, recognize to be symbolic in its representations, but we lack a belief in the transcendental reality of these symbols." 193 pp, 7 1/8" H. Red covers with black lettering on front board. "Man undoubtedly posseses, in however rudimentary a form, certain supersensory powers. The unfoldment of such powers can be hastened by using 'Raja Yoga' as the chief means. If they are not present, the aspirant can diligently supply the necessary conditions for their unfoldment. The broadcast talks of the author included in this volume offer guidance in the management of human life and the development of character needed for such an unfoldment. However, we should remember, that the development of psychic powers is not man's supreme evolutionary attaiment. Spirituality is the goal and psychic powers are but the by-product of the process of obtaining spiritual vision and realization." 13 Isherwood, Christopher. A SINGLE MAN.
London Methuen 1964 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Cover art by Don Bachardy.
158 pp, 8vo (8 1/8" H). "(The subject of this novel) is the consciousness of one man, during one day in 1962, in and around Los Angeles. George, the 'single man' of the title, a middle-aged professor of English, has every reason to live in the past, but even the memory of his friend, Jim, killed in a car crash, does not prevent him from resolutely living in the present. From the first moment of waking consciousness the novel fans out over the day, taking in a hilariously funny lecture on a Huxley novel, and culminating in an unexpected meeting with Kenny, one of his students, in a bar on the seafront. Mr Isherwood has never been so mercilessly frank as here - though the frankness is tempered by his usual wit and compassion." TOOLS FOR TANTRA., Johari, Harish.
14 Johari, Harish. TOOLS FOR TANTRA.
Destiny, Rochester, Vermont, (1986).
136 pp, 4to (11" H), soft cover. B&w drawings, color plates. "Harish Johari, accomplished artist, sculptor, Tantric practitioner and scholar, travelled throughout India in search of ancient examples of the primordial yantras. In 'Tools for Tantra' he has re-created their exact colors and proportions along with step-by-step instructions for the accurate construction, coloring, and use of yantras. Traditional Hindu practices associated with yantras are also fully elaborated; among these are meditation and visualization techniques, as well as methods of attuning with bodily, seasonal, and astrological cycles. A physiological understanding of these disciplines and their effects on the central nervous system is discussed in detail, reaffirming the link between the Eastern Tantric explanation of phenomena and the evidence presented by Western scientific research. Johari also includes a full description of authentic Tantric ritual as a tool for attuning with the world of symbol and nature. The combined powers of ritual, yantras, and the other practices delineated by the author enable us to go beyond the normal framework of consciousness to an altered state in which the experience of Tantra can be realized." THE GRAIL LEGEND., Jung, Emma & Von Franz, Marie-Louise. Translator: Andrea Dykes.
15 Jung, Emma & Von Franz, Marie-Louise. Translator: Andrea Dykes. THE GRAIL LEGEND.
Boston Sigo Press 1986 093843408X / 9780938434085 Second Edition Soft Cover Very Good
452 pp, 9" H. B&w illustrations. "The Holy Grail and its quest is a legend which has had a powerful impact on our civilization and culture. The Grail itself is an ancient Celtic symbol of plenty as well as a Christian symbol of redemption and eternal life, the chalice which caught the blood of the crucified Christ. The story of the Grail sheds profound light on man's search for the supreme value of life, for that which makes life most meaningful. Writing in a clear and readable style, two leading women of the Jungian school of psychology present this legend as a living myth that is meaningful to modern life. We encounter such universal figures as the Fool (the naive young Perceval), the Wise Old Man (the Hermit Gornemanz), the Virgin Maiden (Blancheflor), the Loathly Damsel, and such important themes as the Waste Land, the Trinity, and the vessel of the Grail. Weaving together narrative and interpretation, the authors show us how the legend reflects not only fundamental human problems but also the dramatic psychic events which form the background of our Christian culture." Interior - one tiny corner crease, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - minor soiling on bottom of text block, tiny dent at top of spine, very faint creases on spine, one tiny corner crease.

268 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0195142950 "In this innovative and learned study, Dennis Kezar examines how Renaissance poets conceive the theme of killing as a specifically representational and interpretive form of v iolence. Closely reading both major poets and lesser known authors of the early modern period, Kezar explores the ethical self-consciousness and accountability that attend literary killing, paying particular attention to the ways in which t h i s r e f l ection indicates the poet's understanding of his audience. Among the many poems through which Kezar explores the concept of authorial guilt elicited by violent representation are Skelton's 'Phyllyp Sparrowe', Spencer's 'Faerie Quee n' , Sh ak e sp ea re 's 'Julius Caesar', the multi-authored 'Witch of Edmonton', and Milton's 'Samson Agonistes'. Each chapter places an incident of textual violence within the context of England's literary and social history. In each case, Keza r o ff ers an o rig ina l a cco unt of early modern depictions of violence that reflects on the poetic process and explores the ethical ramifications of literature for both author and audience. In emphasizing the social, literary, and historical cons equ ence s of 'k illi ng p oems ', t his volume further advances scholarship in historicist and speech-act theories of the early modern period.
