THE FIRST GREAT AIR WAR., Bickers, Richard Townshend.
1 Bickers, Richard Townshend. THE FIRST GREAT AIR WAR.
London Hodder & Stoughton 1988 0340263792 / 9780340263792 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
277 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H). B&w photographs. "(T)he story of air operations during the First World War, 1914-1918, mainly on the Western Front. It was only eleven years after the Wright Brothers' first flight that the Royal Flying Corps set off for France and every aspect of air-fighting had to be discovered for the first time. Richard Townshend Bickers gives a fresh and challenging view of the men involved, their aircraft and the conditions of war. The pilots and observers of all the combatant nations tended to be young courageous individuals, filled with a love of flying and of adventure. Their aircraft were fragile and unreliable and casualties were appallingly heavy. It was a period of great technical advances when aerial warfare and tactical teamwork were transformed. (The author gives an account of) Lieutenant General Sir David Henderson's leading role in the formation and development of the Royal Flying Corps (and while not neglecting the 'aces', he) also gives due recognition to the less famous pilots, to the usually overlooked air observers and gunners who flew in two-seater fighters, and to the crews who carried out the less glamorous but equally important reconnaissance and bombing sorties." Very light browning to edges of textblock, tiny speck on top of textblock, minor edge wear. Dust jacket has very minor wrinkling at top of spine, very minor rubbing.

Here, then, is the story of these men - not just the famous 'aces' such as Bishop, Barker, and Collishaw (though they are here too) - but of the other fighter pilots, the men who flew bombers, the Zeppelin and U-boat hunters, the indispensible observation aircraft pilots, and their observers." How an individual commands and exercises leadership speaks more to the character and personality of the respective in dividual than it does to the concepts of command or leadership themselves. (This book) takes an intimate look at a number of Canada's finest military commanders and leaders during the crucible of war. Collectively, the chapters in this volum e o f f e r valuable insights into different command and leadership approaches, behaviours, and styles. They also reinforce the timeless truth that the character and presence of courageous leaders are critical to military outcomes, particularly du ri n g ti me s of ambiguity, undertainty, and chaos." 10 Phelan, Joseph A. Foreword by Sir Thomas Sopwith. HEROES & AEROPLANES OF THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918.
New York Grosset & Dunlap 1970 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Joseph A. Phelan.
128 pp, 4to (12 1/8" H). Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w drawings. "(A) vivid pictorial presentation of (aerial) warfare from the first use of aircraft in war - Italian reconnaissance against the Ottoman Empire in 1912 - to the Armistice in 1918. In striking color the great individual battles of the aces come alive: Immelman, von Richthofen, Voss and Boelcke; Bishop, Collishaw, McCudden, Ball and Beauchamp-Proctor; Rickenbacker; Guynemer, Nungesser and Garros. And the dogfights and sorties; Bloody April and the Fokker Scourge; the Lafayette Escadrille, the Storks, the Flying Circuses; the bombing raids; the balloon busters. The trials of combat and endurance and the men and aero-planes that made it all possible, changing the world's thinking about the methods of war. J.A. Phelan has created more than 400 superb paintings and drawings - executed with the drama and the meticu-lous detail of the artist who takes delight in his subject - for this richly illustrated book. The various aircraft of the Allies and Central Powers are shown in detail (top and side views, camouflage, national markings and pilots' decorations, engines, armament and structure) and in combat as they were flown by the aces. This volume presents an unduplicated view of the 1914-1918 war in the air, when man first captured control of the sky in order to control the ground." A few tiny tape marks from previous protective sleeve at corners of endpapers, scattered tiny light foxing marks on top of text block, one slight corner bump. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, tiny dent on rear hinge.

CANADIAN AIRMEN AND THE FIRST WORLD WAR. THE OFFICIAL HISTORY OF THE ROYAL CANADIAN AIR FORCE. VOLUME I. (1 - ONE), Wise, S.F.
11 Wise, S.F. CANADIAN AIRMEN AND THE FIRST WORLD WAR. THE OFFICIAL HISTORY OF THE ROYAL CANADIAN AIR FORCE. VOLUME I. (1 - ONE)
University of Toronto Press, Toronto, 1980.
771 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers. ISBN 0802023797 Profusely illustrated with photographs and maps (some fold-out). "....provides the definitive story of Canadian airmen in World War I and, moreover, a revisi onist account of the war in the air. Organized topically, this volume begins with an overview of military aviation in Canada prior to 1914, as successful aircraft experiments like Baldwin's and McCurdy's 'Silver Dart' are set against Defenc e M i n i s t er Sam Hughes' rejection of any government air policy. Financial timidity and political uncertainty subsequently decreed that the 20,000 Canadians who trained for, or fought in, history's first air war would have no air force of thei r o wn b ut w ou ld fly in the British flying services. The sections which follow show that Canadians excelled in every aspect of the air war. Indeed, athough the First World War never saw an exclusively Canadian squadron in action and no Canad ia n ros e t o a co mma nd above Group level, Professor Wise has been able to write a full account of the war in the air from the Canadian perspective. Recruitment and training, the maritime air war, the strategic bombing of Germany and the defenc e o f Grea t Br itai n, a s we ll as action on the Western Front, in Italy, and in Macedonia, are all covered in depth. Each section reveals the complexity of air operations, as tactics, strategy, and aircraft evolved with astonishing speed. The e xplo it s of remar kable figh ter a ces such as Billy Bishop, Raymond Collishaw, D.R. MacLaren and W.G. Barker, and of bomber leaders like R.H. Mulock, are set in the context of the air war and the many thousands of Canadians who served with them. In his conc lusion Wise traces the d evel opment of Canadian government air policy to the year 1920, during which time the first Canadian air force was born and quickly died. In analysing this major step in Canada's entry into the air age he l ays t he f oundat ion for postw ar civi l expan sion and the formation of the RCAF. Illustrated with specially prepared colour and sketch maps and over 200 photographs, many of them published here for the first time, this book should prove invalua ble to the militar y histor ian and of wide appeal to th e aviation enthusiast and general reader alike." A heavy volume which may require extra postage. Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, very light edge wear to boards, small bump at botto m corne r of both boa rds. Dus t jacket has ligh t edge w rinkli ng, light fading to spine color, one small closed tear with crease, light rubbing, light browning at top edge of flaps. Very Good+/Very Good-
