1 Axelrod, Alan, commentary. Arrangements by Dan Fox. SONGS OF THE WILD WEST.
New York Metropolitan Musem of Art / Simon & Schuster 1991 0671747754 / 9780671747756 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
128 pp, oblong large 8vo (9 1/2" H x 10 3/4" D). Decorated endpapers, profusely illustrated in color and b&w with photographs, reproductions. "Nothing captures the spirit of the Old West better than the jaunty tunes and classic ballads the cowboys and settlers sang, songs richly represented in this visually stunning volume. Panoramic in scope, the 45 songs, coupled with works of art from The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the Buffalo Bill Historical Center, Cody, Wyoming, chronicle the stirring saga of westward expansion and reflect every facet of life during one of the most exciting periods in our nation's history. The lore of the West intrigued many artists, and the works featured include paintings and sculpture by Frederic Remington, Charles M. Russell, and N.C. Wyeth, as well as a myriad of fascinating artifacts: saddles, spurs, guns, guitars, a stagecoach ticket, a Navajo blanket, and other objects that provide a vivid picture of life in the West. A lively and intriguing text further illuminates this bygone world, exploring the history of the songs, their lyrics, the accompanying art, and the development of the West. The music, arranged for beginning to intermediate musicians and accompanied by chords for the guitar or banjo, is suitable for piano, organ, violin, or recorder." "(C)hronicles the significant aeronautical events which took place in the Cumbria, Dumfries and Galloway region from 1825 to 1914. The uninformed reader glancing at the topographical map may wonder as to what possible level of pioneering aviation activity could be sustained in a predominantly mountainous region where man is grossly outnumbered by sheep - yet between these years it was to encapsulate almost all aspects of man's aeronautical endeavour, from ballooning, parachuting, gliding, aircraft and airship construction to aero engine production. Cumbria is the birthplace of both British naval and civil marine aviation and for the first time the full exciting story is told aided by many previously unpublished documents and photographs." 945 pp, 9 1/2" H. "This major effort of a large group of scholars working in the field of Canadian literature provides a comprehensive, up-to-date reference work on the English literary history of Canada. It will be invaluable as a source of information on authors, genres, and literary trends and influences. It is also a fascinating account, lively and well written, of the ways in which writers have over the centuries striven to record reactions to a powerful natural environment and to their society against the background of other literary traditions in English. This volume represents a positive attempt to give a history of Canada in terms of writings which deserve attention because of significant thought, form, and use of language; it also aims to contribute to criticism by offering reasons for singling out those works regarded as the best." 11 Oliver, Peter. G. HOWARD FERGUSON: ONTARIO TORY.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1977 0802033466 / 9780802033468 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Inscribed By Author
501 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. Inscribed on title page: "For John Watson, / with my very best wishes, / Peter Oliver". "As premier of Ontario from 1923 to 1930, G. Howard Ferguson was the most successful, the most colourful, and perhaps the ablest of Canadian politicians of his time. Largely as a result of his leadership, the Ontario Tories emerged from the debacle of their 1919 defeat to eliminate virtually all political opposition - and launch the Conservative dynasty in Ontario. Peter Oliver's study of Ferguson's life and times provides both a revealing picture of a political professional of driving ambition and rare talent and a commentary on a largely rural society dealing with the challenges of industrialization and urbanization." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine, previous owner's name stamp on free front endpaper, minor glue residue on endpapers, minor browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, light edge browning, one very small tear archivally taped some rubbing with color loss at bottom of spine.
