6 Ferguson, John. With Stan & Shirley Fischler. THUNDER AND LIGHTNING.
Scarborough, Ontario Prentice-Hall 1989 0139206469 / 9780139206467 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
334 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "If the Montreal Canadiens had a weakness in the early 1960s it was size. Too often, small Canadiens were being battered against the boards and checked out of action. In 1963, that problem was solved, and a big part of the solutions was John Ferguson. Chosen out of the American Hockey Leauge by Frank Selke, Ferguson showed up in training camp with a reputation as a good hockey player, and one who hadn't lost a fight in the AHL. He lived up to his reputation during his first game in Boston. At the opening faceoff, he got into a fight with Ted Green, which he won. Not only that, Ferguson proceeded to score twice in that game, which ended in a 4-4 tie. John Ferguson played for the Canadiens for eight years, until he retired in 1971. During those years, he shared in five Stanley Cups, played five hundred games, scored 145 goals and 158 assists, and spent 1214 minutes in the penalty box. An extremely aggressive forward, he acted as the club's policeman and extended his dislike of opposing players off the ice. Ferguson retired from the Canadiens in 1971 to begin a new career as a businessman. He came back to hockey as Coach and General Manager of the New York Rangers in 1976, then as General Manager of the Winnipeg Jets, and finally as General Manager of Team Canada. Having retired once more from hockey, (he) will dedicate himself to his second great sporting love, as President of The Windsor Raceway." Minor wrinkling to top/bottom of text block, tiny dent to top edge of front board. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing, minor edge browning light crease down front flap.

Unpaginated (approx 96 pp), hard cover in dust jacket. 166 photographs + photographic frontispiece, b&w route maps. "Southern Branch Lines were some of the most picturesque in the British Isles, passing over woodlands, over downs and to holiday se aside resorts. In spite of the Southern Railway's electrification policy, the Southern Branch line was the one place where steam could be seen with a variety of motive power before the coming of the diesel multiple units. Green was the p r o m i n e n t c olour of the Southern, on the stations, the coaches, the locomotive and even in the countryside around. Many Southern Branch Line trains were steam hauled long into the '50s and early '60s and the scenes in this book show this in t he f in al y ea rs of steam power." THE STORY OF CANADIAN ROADS., Guillet, Edwin C.
8 Guillet, Edwin C. THE STORY OF CANADIAN ROADS.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1968 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
246 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions, maps, drawings. "From portage trails snaking their way through the wilderness to superhighways carrying the raw materials and produce of an industrial nation, Canada's roads have had a romantic but long-neglected history. The problems which Canada has faced in seeking to connect two oceans by road would have been formidable even in a land more densely populated. Early builders found their way blocked by forest and swamp, rivers, rocks, vast areas of grassland, mountains, and muskeg. Their gradual success is recounted from the woodland trail cleared by Champlain in Acadia on through the early construction by corvee in New France; the Temiscouta Trail between the Atlantic Provinces and the Canadas; the infamous corduroy roads and bridges which jolted passengers unmercifully and lamed their horses; the plank roads, Canada's first contribution to road-building science; the cart tracks cut into the virgin prairies by Metis buffalo hunters; the Cariboo Road, build through sheer canyons and over mountain passes to the gold fields fo the Upper Fraser; and the vehicles which travelled these routes - the wonderul assortment of sleighs, caleches, buckboards, Red River carts, wagons, and stage-coaches of the nineteenth century. Then came the automobile, and with it an unprecedented personal mobility. Today Canada's roads are one of her principal resources. The Trans-Canada Highway, a dream for most of a century, has forged a new tie of asphalt and concrete, unifying the country." Dust jacket has very light edge wear, tiny dent on front hinge.

11 Lowe, Kevin. With Stan and Shirley Fischler. CHAMPIONS: THE MAKING OF THE EDMONTON OILERS.
Scarborough, Ontario Prentice-Hall 1988 0132356236 / 9780132356237 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
356 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "When the Edmonton Oilers won their first Stanley Cup in 1984, Albertans rejoiced. They had waited 91 years for just this moment. When they won it again in 1985, a new era in hockey was born: The Edmonton Era. Just six years after being incorporated into the National Hockey League, the Oilers had won back-to-back Stanley Cups and rewritten half the record book. In these few years they had grown from a cocky, immature team into a championship team with character and charisma. Kevin Lowe describes all of this and more. In particular, he talks about his teammates - the magnificent Mark Messier, the Flying Finns, the unbeatable Grant Fuhr, Boy Wonder Wayne Gretzky and, of course, the controversial Glen Sather. (This) is the complete, dynamic chronicle of the team that Gretzky helped to propel to greatness, told from the point of view of (his) roommate and teammate Kevin Lowe." Slight wrinkle at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has soft wrinkling at bottom of spine and bottom of rear flap, very light rubbing on rear panel.

LONDON BUSES 1929-1939., Martin, Gavin.
12 Martin, Gavin. LONDON BUSES 1929-1939.
Ian Allan, London, 1990.
144 pp, 4to (11 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0711018804 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "....1929 was marked by a great leap forward in London bus design which followed the appointment of George John Rackham as Chief Engin eer at AEC. The following year saw the introduction of the Green Line coach services working across London from what were then sleepy country towns 30 or more miles distant from the fringes of the London General Omnibus Co's empire. The y e a r 1 9 3 0 also saw the first hesitant appearance of the diesel engine, quickly to be followed by the fluid flywheel, Wilson gearbox and hydraulic brakes. By the summer of 1932, a year before the formation of London Transport, some of the Ge ne ra l' s f am ou s Bl u ebird buses had these features in combination. London Transport quickly got to work replacing obsolete and non-standard buses and coaches. By the end of 1937 the General's NS type had all gone and by the summer of 1939 on ly a h and fu l of the v ehi cl es inherited from independent operators remained. The famous 10T10 type had replaced the first-generation Green Line coaches. New bus and coach designs of unorthodox layout - the TF type with the engine under the flo or, the CR ty pe with th e en gin e at the rear - were already in service. The side-engined AEC Q-type had come and gone as a production model, even though most of London Transport's 200 examples were to last until the 1950s. The incomparable RT type dou ble -de cke r whi ch w as to dom inate the London bus scene for nearly 40 years also appeared in 1939....takes the reader through these developments as they occurred, explaining their significance in language he or she will understand ." Faint ciga rett e od or, slight wavi ness t o edg es of texblock. Dust jacket has areas of light edge wrinkling. VG+/VG+

223 pp, 8 3/4" H. "Using the same liberating techniques that drew Diane Keaton, James Earl Jones, and Madeline Kahn to his famous drama workshop, Warren Robertson now reveals his program to help you star in the longest-running show in town - your own life. 'Free to Act' presents a revolutionary new method of using body, mind, and emotion to break out of habitual behavior and self-defeating attitudes. (His) technique is about acting - the fine art of taking actions in the world. He maintains there is no more reason for a person to be limited to a confining role in life than there is for an actor to play a single part for an entire career. His program is designed to enable you to bring all of yourself, in the most complete, animated way, to every moment of your life." 192 pp, oblong 8vo (8 11/16" H x 10 5/8" D), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0370313453 Profusely illustrated in colour. "The Royal Mews behind Buckingham Palace is the department of the Royal Household responsible for the horse-drawn and motor travel arrangements of Her Majesty the Queen and members of the Royal Family. Its buildings form a hidden village of stables, workshops, homes, offices and garages, and the Mews community, despite modernisation, flourishes on customs and traditions that have been handed down over nine reigns. The Queen's regular use of horses and carriages has provided essential patronage for the skills of the craftsmen who also work there and are involved in their upkeep. The international media co v e r a g e t hat is given to many domestic and ceremonial occasions throughout the Royal year means that Her Majesty's carriages and cars are very much in the public eye. But whether seen on the streets, the television screen or the printed page, t he re i s li t tl e time for the spectator to absorb the wealth of historic detail that is on view in any royal procession. In their new book, Mary Stewart-Wilson and David Cripps present an unrivalled account of the carriages, horses, harness, li ver y a nd ca rs of th e Royal Mews. What they have done is to stop the procession to allow a closer look at two and a half centuries of regal splendour and service to the Crown."
