3 Arnup, John D. MIDDLETON: THE BELOVED JUDGE.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1988 0771007959 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
202 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "(T)he story of one of Ontario's and Canada's greatest judges, William Edward Middleton (1860-1948), who served as a justice of the Supreme Court of Ontario for thirty-three years, twenty-two of them as an appellate judge. At a time when a number of Supreme Court justices were belligerent to counsel and irascible toward their brother judges, Mr. Justice Middleton set a high standard of courtesy and civility that has carried on to the present day. Because (he) never sought attention or encouraged controversy, his contributions have been known heretofore only in legal circles. Yet here is a man whose written judgments are still cited fifty, sixty, even seventy years later, the judge who sat on 'the Great Stork Derby' case of the 1930s, and who decided which of the two litigious Kellogg brothers could sell his corn flakes in Canada. In addition, Middleton was a renowned botanist and legal scholar. The prison inmates of his Bible class knew him better and appreciated his exemplary character far more than the average citizen. (This book) is rich with anecdotage and presents important legal cases in a manner the general reader can understand and appreciate." Minor old tape residue at top/bottom edges of free endpapers, small corner crease on page 7, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, small ink mark on bottomm edge of both boards. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, one or two very tiny edge tears, minor rubbing.

HMS SHEFFIELD: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF 'OLD SHINY'., Bassett, Ronald.
5 Bassett, Ronald. HMS SHEFFIELD: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF 'OLD SHINY'.
London Arms and Armour 1988 0853689113 / 9780853689119 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Good+
224 pp, large 8vo (9 15/16" H). B&w maps and photographs. "The first HMS Sheffield was launched in 1936 to serve her flag bravely for thirty years. During World War Two, the cruiser became one of the most illustrious warships of all time, achieving twelve honours. In 1940, she fought in the action off Cape Spartivento; in the following year she shared in the audacious bombardment of Genoa, exchanged salvoes with Bismarck and sank one of that battleship's supply tankers, Friedrich Breme. In the Arctic a mine blew a 22-foot hole in her stern, but in an Icelandic fjord her crew fashioned a makeshift timber patch before steaming her back to Britain to fight again. In 1942, in the Barents Sea, Sheffield was in action against the 'pocket battleships' Admiral Hipper and Lutzow, and sank the German destroyer Friedrich Eckoldt. In 1943 she shared in the destruction of the battlecruiser Scharnhorst off North Cape and later supported carrier attacks upon Tirpitz. These, however, were but the highlights of this distinguished ship's wartime service. This book tells the story of her entire life and of her crews before, during and after World War Two - not from the detached perspective of an 'armchair historian', but from that of a writer who served at that time in a similar cruiser. Ronald Bassett was entrusted with research material accumulated over many years by an officer of Sheffield who died before those records could be turned into a book. Hundreds of her crew members, including several of her commanding officers, have contributed to this chronicle by means of their memoirs, diaries, letters, newspaper cuttings and photographs, enabling (the author) to paint an accurate and powerfully evocative portrait of a famous ship." Slight bump at bottom of spine, slight waviness to edges of text block, previous owner's label on free front endpaper, book cracked in several places but page signatures are holding firmly. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling, several small edge tears (two taped) and chips, light rubbing with some slight colour loss on rear panel.

Each found a way through the maze of courses, cases, debates and exams. Then they fanned out across the country to careers as diverse as their beginnings. 1991. BIRTH OF THE BATTLESHIP: BRITISH CAPITAL SHIP DESIGN 1870-1881., Beeler, John.
7 Beeler, John. BIRTH OF THE BATTLESHIP: BRITISH CAPITAL SHIP DESIGN 1870-1881.
Caxton, London, 2003, reprint.
224 pp, 4to (11 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1840675349 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, drawings, diagrams, plans. "The 1870s and 1880s have traditionally been seen as the 'Dark Ages' of British warship design, where techn ological conservatism and a lack of any definite design policy produced a confusing mix of ship types, with armament and machinery which were outmoded before the ships were even completed. This new book, however, is a powerful refutation of t h a t v i ew, expanding the scope of its study of the ships of this period beyond the narrowly technological to reveal the full range of strategic, logistical and administrative factors which influenced warship development, arguing that it is her e th at t h e or igins of the modern battleship can be found. The author gives an insight into the difficulties faced by warship designers in an age of rapid technological change, and sets out the valid strategic and technical reasons that lay beh in d s uch se em in gly 'reactionary' policies as the fitting of sails in cruising ironclads, and the Navy's retention of muzzle-loading guns well into the 1880s. Far from having no plan, it is shown that the warship designers of this period had a v ery clea r id ea of the types of ship required to meet the range of roles the Royal Navy was called upon to fulfill in defence of a global empire, and that the problems that the ships of this period had owed more to political, financial and admi nist rati ve pr essur es tha n an y lack of competance on the part of their designers." Eva's account of her transition from housewife to eccentric is the basis for this warm and delightful novel which, in a surprising way, turns out to be a love story. MADAME TUSSAUD: A LIFE IN WAX., Berridge, Kate.
9 Berridge, Kate. MADAME TUSSAUD: A LIFE IN WAX.
Toronto HarperCollins 2006 0002008122 / 9780002008129 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
352 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w illustrations. "When she died in London at the age of ninety, a survivor of one of the most tumultuous epochs in history, Madame Tussaud had travelled far from her inauspicious beginnings in Strasbourg as the daughter of a common soldier and a housekeeper. Moving to Paris as a child, Marie climbed through the ranks of French society as the protegee of charmismatic showman artist Philippe Curtius, and witnessed the French Revolution in all its grisly detail. She survived the Terror and moved to London, where she struggled to find a foothold amidst the desperate competition of showmen from all over Europe. Her touring years were studded with drama and danger, and twice she nearly lost her life and livelihood - first in a shipwreck and then at the hands of a rampaging mob in the Reform riots of 1831. The core of her exhibition was Revolutionary relics given extra potency by her victim survivor status and the famous claims that she was forced to cast the death masks of Marie Antoinette and other members of the royal family, whom she had known personally when employed to teach modelling at Versailles. But did her desire to make a compelling and commercial spectacle of the events unfolding around her extend to moulding her own dramatic story? The story of a business empire sculpted out of the ashes of one of history's most turbulent periods reveal a woman who - in exploiting the human fascination with the rich, the famous and the infamous - was far ahead of her time." Very small bump at bottom corner of both boards, wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very light rubbing.

THE SMUG MINORITY., Berton, Pierre.
10 Berton, Pierre. THE SMUG MINORITY.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1968 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good-
160 pp, 8 3/4" H. "This is a book about freedom - and the lack of it - in Canada: freedom from useless and often degrading toil; freedom from want and freedom from ignorance. It is Berton's thesis, documented by public statments made over the past generation, that a smug minority of business and political leaders has conspired to inhibit that freedom. The author indicts his fellow countrymen for failing to invest in human beings in the same way that they invest in power plants, highways, and gold mines. His researches into poverty in Canada and into the inequalities of the education system will shock a good many readers just as his theories on work and leisure will enrage others raised in the Calvinist ethic. The book ranges over a wide variety of topics: the hippie movement in Toronto's Yorkville village - the author's personal experiences in a Yukon mining camp - the future of educational television in Canada - and the Chamber of Commerce's abortive 'Operation Freedom' campaign. But always Berton hammers on his central theme - that the nation has been held back by an inbred power-elite: 'Selfish, narrow, short-sighted men unable to grasp the vision of the future, imprisoned by a bookkeeping attitude to life, creeping silently and blindly along at the tag end of the parade of progress'." Small stamp mark on free front endpaper. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top of spine, light to moderate rubbing - mostly on rear panel, one small edge tear archivally taped.

Toronto HarperCollins / Phyllis Bruce 2005 0002007894 / 9780002007894 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
384 pp, 9 1/4" H. "The lives of two dazzling aristocratic sisters, Lucy and Dorothy Percy, present a perfect window into the world of political unrest and social intrigue of seventeenth-century English society. Their breeding, beauty, and cunning made them among the most influential women of their time. Born during the reign of Elizabeth I, the Percy sisters came to prominence at the court of Charles I. Lucy, the Countess of Carlisle - the 'court lady' - dominated the royal scene thanks to her position at the center of power. Her beauty, captured in magnificent Van Dyck portraits, and her political skill attracted prominent lovers, and her charm and talents as a gossip ensured her inclusion in the Queen's inner circle. Then, her machinations during the Civil WAr led to her imprisonment in the Tower of London. Her sister, Dorothy, Countess of Leicester - the 'country wife' - had twelve surviving children and managed the family estates while her husband traveled abroad or immersed himself in books. As a diplomat's wife, she was brilliant, with a keen eye and special purview of European politics. This early ancestor of Princess Diana's family was also a shrewish wife who bossed her mate for more than thirty-seven years before he rebelled publicly, causing a scandal. (This book) brilliantly depicts the position of upper-class women in seventeenth-century Britain and illuminates a grand and turbulent era." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has some very light edge wrinkling.
