We are scarcely aware of the effects of such scientific reseach and planning on our daily lives; yet their impact is incalculable. The National Research Council in Ottawa has been responsible not only for research conducted in its own laboratories, but also in universities and regional laboratories across the country. The history of the Council is enriched by strong personalities such as Dr. Henry Marshall Tory, its first President and early champion of federal research. It chronicles the frustration of bureaucratic haggling, and the battles for improved funding and facilities to carry on important projects. It is the dramatic account of wartime work for more effective weaponry, on gas masks, radar and atomic fission. And it details the equally significant, but less known work on wheat rust, the difficulties of construction in the Canadian environment and wind tunnel experiments to ensure aviation safety." 279 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). "1864. London is a city in transition. The Constantine Affliction - a strange malady that kills some of its victims and physically transforms others into the opposite sex - has spread scandal and upheaval through society. Scientific marvels and disasters, such as clockwork courtesans, the alchemical fires of Whitechapel, electric carriages, and acidic monsters lurking in the Thames, have forever altered the face of the city. Pembroke 'Pimm' Halliday is an aristocrat with an interest in criminology, who uses his keen powers of observation to assist the police or private individuals - at least when he's sober enough to do so. Ellie Skyler, who hides her gender behind the byline 'E. Skye', is an intrepid journalist driven by both passion and necessity to uncover the truth, no matter where it lies. When Pimm and Skye stumble onto a dark plot that links the city's most notorious criminal overlord with the Queen's new consort, famed scientist Sir Bertram Oswald, they soon find the forces of both high and low society arrayed against them. Can they save the city from the arcane machinations of one of history's most infamous monsters - and uncover the shocking origins of 'The Constantine Affliction'?" 18 Savage, Candace. Foreword by Adrian Forsyth. PEREGRINE FALCONS.
Vancouver Douglas & McIntyre 1992 1550540106 / 9781550540109 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
145 pp, 12 1/4" H. Beautifully illustrated with colour photographs of peregrine falcons, their habitats, nests, eggs, and young provided by 35 of the world's best-known wildlife photographers and falcon researchers. "(T)he peregrine's recent history holds a cautionary tale: in the 1950s and 1960s, these magnificent birds were nearly wiped out when their food chain was contaminated with pesticides, primarily DDT. (Fortunately) they were saved from extinction with the help of a multimillion dollar recovery program. The peregrine is on the wing again throughout much of its range. But as the author warns, we still have not roused ourselves to face the real enemy. DDT and other persistent pesticides continue to be manufactured and exported to the Third World, and the chemical compounds currently used in Western countries may be almost as deadly. We must change agricultural practices on a global scale, Savage argues; only then will we be heeding the message of hope the falcon has long been empowered to bring." Light wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

This flood of inventions and developments, coinciding as it did with rising levels of industrialization and unpre c e d e n t e d increases in population, ensured that a whole generation would be virtually wiped out before the guns were silenced....(In this book, Terraine) concentrates on the nuts and bolts, the technology of war. His study is set against the ba ck gr ou nd o f the strategy of the high commands, which proved tactically so difficult to implement; the armies of the western front grinding to a halt and digging in, contrasting starkly with the sweeping movements in the east; the desperate a tte mpt s t o b rea kou t of the deadlock by means both orthodox and unorthodox, using all the tricks that the new technology could offer; the fighting that wore down all the armies involved, and the final push that finally stopped the carnage...."
