134 pp, 11 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "The old-time Christmas concert is remembered almost unanimously by participants and onlookers alike as 'the biggest day of the year'. Every phase of the concert is featured in this wonderful book: from the first rehearsals to the unpredictably disastrous moments on concert night; from the welcome speech by a nervous preschooler to the climax of the program, the nativity pageant. The monologues and drills, costume songs and plays, gymnastics displays and minstrel acts are recalled vividly by participants in their own words and complemented by private photographs and treasured concert momentos. (This book) brings back the drama and excitement of the old-time school Christmas concert to all who miss it, to all who want to reminisce about it, and to all who wish to experience it for the first time." 369 pp, 8vo (8 7/16" H). Book club edition. "(S)howcases twenty beguiling tales for the child-that-was and the adult-that-is, penned by twenty of the most creative artists in contemporary American literature. Here dissected are the darker anatomies of the timeless, seemingly simple stories we have long loved. Here wonder and truth have serious bite. A lovelorn prince seeking his father's blessing concocts a fantastic tale of a witch, a tower, and lustrous long hair - A pair of accursed red boots punishes a beautiful dancer for her pride - A troll-killing, princess-rescuing warrior is compelled to consider events from his adversaries' point of view - In a blistering tell-all memoir, Goldilocks reveals the sordid truth about her brutal foster parent, Papa Bear - . Rich, surprising, funny, exotic, and unsettling, these twenty new yarns and poems offer exceptional new treasures - as they brilliantly reveal lusts and jealousies, foibles, hatreds, and dangerous obsessions, the things that slyly lurk in the midnight interior of oft-told tales." GIRLS GROWING UP IN LATE VICTORIAN AND EDWARDIAN ENGLAND., Dyhouse, Carol.
6 Dyhouse, Carol. GIRLS GROWING UP IN LATE VICTORIAN AND EDWARDIAN ENGLAND.
Routledge & Kegan Paul, London, 1981, first edition.
224 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 071000821X "Girls learn about 'femininity' from childhood onwards, first through their relationships with the family, and later from their teachers and peers. Using sources which vary from diaries to Inspector's reports, Carol Dyhouse studies the socialization of middle- and working-class girls in late-Victorian and early-Edwardian England. She traces the ways in which schooling at all social levels at this time tended to r e i n f o r c e lessons in the sexual division of labour and patterns of authority between men and women, which girls had already learned at home. In Elementary Schools, social anxieties about 'National Efficiency', high infant-mortality figures a nd a d ec li ni ng b i rth-rate helped to shape the curriculum offered to working-class girls through the period 1870-1920. The author then focuses on the emergence of a social psychology of adolescent girlhood in the early-twentieth century wit h i ts edu cat ion al imp lic at ions. Finally, she examines the relationship between feminism and girls' education through the period studied." Small faint area of soiling on fornt board. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bott om o f s pine and fla p-f olds , fa din g to spine color - lettering very legible, blank label on front flap, minor rubbing. 338 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). "Bella Fromm (a Jewish reporter) wrote a social column for a liberal Berlin newspaper. Attending luncheons, teas and dinners during the 1930's 'Frau Bella' met everybody of importance and gauged accurately what each person counted for in the developing storm. Among the many German leaders she knew wre General von Hindenberg, Franz von Papen, Goebbels, Goering, Himmler, filmaker Leni Riefenstahl and countless other political and social figures. In this secret journal, smuggled out piecemeal before she left Germany, Fromm describes her experiences and conversations with this cast of characters that would soon play shocking roles in Hitler's Third Reich. The gossip, dark secrets and Nazi maneuverings she discovered or intuited - but never reported in her column - appear here with startling immediacy." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of hinges. University of North Carolina Press, Chapel Hill, 1997.
283 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0807823341 B&w photographs, maps/battle plans, reproductions. "In the spring of 1864, in the vast scrub forest that spread south from Virginia's Rapidan and Rappahannock Rivers, Ulysse s S. Grant and Robert E. Lee met in battle for the first time. The Wilderness campaign of May 5-6 initiated an epic confrontation between these two commanders - one that would finally end, eleven months later, with Lee's surrender at Appomat t o x . T he contributors to this volume bring modern scholarship and fresh insight to bear on the issues and leaders of the Wilderness campaign. Their essays explore the campaign's background, for example, by training an often-revisionist lens on e xp ec ta t io ns among civilians in the North and South, morale among officers and soldiers in both armies, and the strategic plans of Lee and Grant. Other essays assess the shaky performance of Union cavalry leaders Philip H. Sheridan and Jame s H arr iso n W il s on, the controversial actions of Confederate corp commanders Richard S. Ewell and A.P.Hill, and the often overlooked service of Lewis A. Grant and his Vermont Brigade. Finally, two of the most famous elements of the fighting i n th e Wi lder ness - th e 'L ee to the Rear' episode and James Longstreet's flank attack - are reconstructed in impressive detail." MAYFAIR: A SOCIAL HISTORY., Kennedy, Carol.
17 Kennedy, Carol. MAYFAIR: A SOCIAL HISTORY.
Hutchinson, London, 1986, first edition.
300 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0091555906 B&w plates. "For more than 250 years Mayfair has been the best address in London - rivalled now by Belgravia but still a glamorous and desirable place in which to live and work. I n this century it has had a glittering image as the playground of high society, and Mayfair is still shorthand for a moneyed way of life, though these days the money comes mainly from expense accounts and Middle East oil wells. And the des i r a b l e p roperties in the glossy ads in 'Country Life' and 'Tatler' are more likely to be offices than private homes. From its raffish Restoration origins this has been an area which boasted an extraordinary mixture of residents, from member s of C ha rl es II ' s court to Clive of India, Beau Brummell, Mrs Fitzherbert (who secretly married the Prince Regent in the drawing-room of a house in Park Street), through eminent Victorians like Disraeli and Florence Nightingale to plutocrats l ike Ba rne y B arn a to an d J.P. Morgan, and leaders of pre-war society like the Mountbattens and Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. Until the late nineteenth century it was also a village of all the talents, a cross-section of society where aristocrats and art isan s li ved back t o b ack a nd their neighbours included politicans, playwrights, poets and craftsmen. Finally, in this fascinating social history, Carol Kennedy looks hard at post-war Mayfair; at what happens on the real-life Monopol y bo ard w hen t he le ases fall in ."
