Toronto HarperCollins / Phyllis Bruce 2005 0002007894 / 9780002007894 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
384 pp, 9 1/4" H. "The lives of two dazzling aristocratic sisters, Lucy and Dorothy Percy, present a perfect window into the world of political unrest and social intrigue of seventeenth-century English society. Their breeding, beauty, and cunning made them among the most influential women of their time. Born during the reign of Elizabeth I, the Percy sisters came to prominence at the court of Charles I. Lucy, the Countess of Carlisle - the 'court lady' - dominated the royal scene thanks to her position at the center of power. Her beauty, captured in magnificent Van Dyck portraits, and her political skill attracted prominent lovers, and her charm and talents as a gossip ensured her inclusion in the Queen's inner circle. Then, her machinations during the Civil WAr led to her imprisonment in the Tower of London. Her sister, Dorothy, Countess of Leicester - the 'country wife' - had twelve surviving children and managed the family estates while her husband traveled abroad or immersed himself in books. As a diplomat's wife, she was brilliant, with a keen eye and special purview of European politics. This early ancestor of Princess Diana's family was also a shrewish wife who bossed her mate for more than thirty-seven years before he rebelled publicly, causing a scandal. (This book) brilliantly depicts the position of upper-class women in seventeenth-century Britain and illuminates a grand and turbulent era." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has some very light edge wrinkling.

4 Boissery, Beverley. A DEEP SENSE OF WRONG: THE TREASON, TRIALS, AND TRANSPORTATION TO NEW SOUTH WALES OF LOWER CANADIAN REBELS AFTER THE 1838 REBELLION.
Toronto Dundurn 1995 1550022423 / 9781550022421 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
367 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w maps, illustrations. "In 1839 fifty-eight men left Montreal for the penal colony of New South Wales. They were unimportant men outside their own parishes, ordinary people who had been caught up in the political whirlwind of the 1838 rebellion. Even though they were all civilians, they had been tried by court martial. Convicted of treason, their properties forfeited to the crown, they paid a heavy price for rebellion. And as convicts in Australia, they were considered the lowest of a bad lot. During their years there, however, they earned the respect of Sydney's citizens. (This) is an intimate, grass-roots history, based largely on surviving legal records and on the writings of some of the individuals who lived the story. We follow the men from the confusion of battle, to the court martial, and then to lonely exile in a land half a world away. Their anguish and dignity will resonate today." Light waviness to top/bottom of text block. Dust jacket has light rubbing, a few small areas of light edge wrinkling.

The vast conflict, which involved almost all the European powers and their empires, is the subject of (this book). (It) provides a highly readable narrative of a complex period that fundamentally shaped the European state system. ENGLISH COURT LIFE, FROM HENRY VII TO GEORGE II., Dutton, Ralph.
10 Dutton, Ralph. ENGLISH COURT LIFE, FROM HENRY VII TO GEORGE II.
London B.T. Batsford 1963 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
232 pp, 9" H. B&w illustrations. "The atmosphere of a Court is enclosed and artificial. The monarch has in the past enjoyed a wide degree of power without a corresponding sense of obligation or responsibility; and for the courtiers, whose position depended on their agreeableness, flattery has always been at a premium just as frankness has been inhibited. How do men and women react in circumstances where normal standards of behaviour are inapplicable? This is the question which, by implication, Ralph Dutton answers in this book. Since his survey covers the three centuries from Henry VII to George VII it is natural that, in so many different courts and under the reign of so various a series of kings and queens, Court Life should appear in most of its possible forms. But in the moral forcing house of the Court a constant element, from 1485 to 1760, has been the tendency for personal virtues and defects of character to become exaggerated to an extent seldom met with in the prosaic outside world. As to the Courts themselves: the Coronations, Drawing-rooms, Progresses, Births and Funerals; the favourites, mistresses and politicians, and the palaces in which they met, intrigued and lived: as to all these, they provide Mr. Dutton with a rich topic on which to exercise his accustomed gifts for description, quotation and deprecatory comment." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, very light edge and corner wear, bump at top corner of front board - migrates as a small bump at top corner of pages up to approx. page 40, small store label at bottom of front pastedown. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor browning at top edge of flaps, small crease at bottom corner of rear flap.

A facsimile of the edition published by John Winston Co., Philadelphia, 1913 - with a new introduction for the Coles Canadiana Collection. "After establishing the physical setting of French Canada and its natural splendor, Hopkins examines and describes the types - religious, social, psychological - who were responsible for the creation of French Canada, and French Canadian society. As themes, Hopkins emphsizes the discoverers Cartier and Champlain, the explorers - fur traders Lasalle, and LaVerendrye, the roles of the Church, the martyrs, the early government administrators. Hopkins' views and sentiments reflected the philosophies of many of his contemporaries, including John A. Macdonald, Wilfrid Laurier and Sir Thomas Chapais. Despite the strong and steady current of Imperial sentiment prevailing, an incipient Canadian nationalism was emerging, fostered by the creation of national heroes, villains and saints." 248 pp, large 8vo (9" H). B&w photographs, reproductions, drawings. "Steamboats carrying passengers from Hamilton to Montreal via the rapids of the St. Lawrence were a popular sight in the latter half of the nineteenth century. In 1855, the 'Kingston', an iron steamboat built for John Hamilton, appeared on the Great Lakes. When the Prince of Wales (later Edward VII) toured British North America in 1860, the 'Kingston' became his floating palace for much of his time between Quebec and Toronto. While many steamboats claimed to be floating palaces, the 'Kingston' truly was one. The 'Kingston' was wrecked many times and survived spectacular fires in 1872 and 1873. Late in her career, she was converted into a salvage vessel and renamed the 'Cornwall'. In 1930 she was finally taken out and sunk near one of Kingston's ship graveyards. There she remained until diver Rick Neilson discovered her in 1989. Today, the once-palatial 'Kingston' is a popular dive site and tourist attraction."
