CHARIOT: THE ASTOUNDING RISE AND FALL OF THE WORLD'S FIRST WAR MACHINE., Cotterell, Arthur.
1 Cotterell, Arthur. CHARIOT: THE ASTOUNDING RISE AND FALL OF THE WORLD'S FIRST WAR MACHINE.
London Pimlico 2004 0712669426 / 9780712669429 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Near Fine
344 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, drawings, maps. "The chariot changed the face of ancient warfare. First in West Asia and Egypt, then in India and China, charioteers came to dominate the battlefield. In 1274 B.C. at Kadesh in present-day Syria - where the untried pharoah Ramesses II was nearly defeated by the Hittites - some 5,000 chariots were deployed in battle. Its use as a war machine is grapically recounted in Indian epics and Chinese chronicles. Homer's Illiad tells of the attack on Troy by Greek heroes who rode in chariots. In 325 B.C. Alexander the Great faced charioteers in northern India, while in 55 B.C., on a Kent beach, Julius Caesar was met by British chariots. This unique book traces the rise and fall of the chariot right across the Old World, from Britain to Korea." Includes a chapter titled 'Survivals, Ritual and Racing'. Book is Fine. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, very minor rubbing on spine.

A FOLK TALE JOURNEY THROUGH THE MARITIMES., Creighton, Helen. Edited with an introduction by Michael Taft and Ronald Caplan.
2 Creighton, Helen. Edited with an introduction by Michael Taft and Ronald Caplan. A FOLK TALE JOURNEY THROUGH THE MARITIMES.
Wreck Cove, Cape Breton Island Breton Books 1993 1895415284 / 9781895415285 Soft Cover Very Good
249 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs. "These are the folk tales from Dr. Helen Creighton's life journey through the Maritime Provinces, collecting songs and ghost stories and old cures - and folk tales. Helen serves as our guide, introducing us to storytellers, setting the scene of the telling - and then she lets the person tell it as they told it to her. The feel of the kitchen and the fish shed still cling to these stories. Some are long, really miraculous folk tales - miraculous in detail and in that they managed to survive. Others are the brief riddle or the tantalizing quick-telling that a folklorist can expect along the way. Helen kept it all. And read as a whole, the reality and intensity of those smaller pieces reveals their value in among the more finished, well-told tales. (This) is a Maritime treasure." Interior - crease at bottom corner of page leaf 89/90, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - slight bump at top of spine, minor rubbing, minor soft crease at top corner of rear cover.

176 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w illustrations. "Judaism, has flourished for millennia in a myriad of environments; each has contributed something to the Jewish tradition. Far from being a religion ossified in the world of the Bible; it has produced countless legends and stories, built up on Bible inspiration but reflecting the ideas of the cultures within which they emerged. (This book) explores the core of the Jewish faith by retelling the stories made up and told by Jews throughout the world. The author develops essential ideas of Judaism, including the creation of the universe, the history of man, the history of Israel and the future of Israel. He retells the familiar Biblical stories surrounding the great Biblical personalities such as Abraham, Moses and Elijah. He then goes on to show how their ideas and their characters were developed in the legends and folklore surrounding the Torah, and elaborated throughout the rabbinical tradition. With its great variety of stories told in clear and simple style, written for Jew and Gentile alike, (it) provides a fascinating insight into the wealth and vitality of Judaism." FATHER TO DAUGHTER: THE FAMILY LETTERS OF MAXWELL PERKINS., Perkins, Maxwell. Edited by Bertha Perkins Frothingham, Louise Perkins King, and Ruth King Porter.
5 Perkins, Maxwell. Edited by Bertha Perkins Frothingham, Louise Perkins King, and Ruth King Porter. FATHER TO DAUGHTER: THE FAMILY LETTERS OF MAXWELL PERKINS.
Kansas City Andews and McMeel 1995 0836204875 / 9780836204872 Hard Cover Fine Very Good+ Maxwell Perkins.
213 pp, large 8vo (9 3/16" H). B&w drawings by Maxwell Perkins, photographs. "Among book editors, none is quite so revered as Maxwell Perkins. During the years he worked in New York City's Charles Scribner's Sons, the legendary editor helped brilliant minds focus thoughts into literature, shaped manuscripts into classics, then championed writers into best-selling authors. F. Scott Fitzgerald, Thomas Wolfe, Ernest Hemingway, and Marcia Davenport were only a few authors who had Perkins to thank for at least some of their success. Behind the scenes, however, this literary genius was a devoted father to five daughters - Bertha, Elizabeth, Louise, Jane, and Nancy. Because he wanted the girls to know and love the family homestead in Windsor, Vermont he sent them there every summer and corresponded with them daily. From thoughts about the people he met to reminiscences of favorite family vacations, Perkins provided a vivid presence in his daughters' lives, whether he was with them or not. In (this book), the touching correspondence Perkins created for his daughters has been gathered into a memento of a great man. It is obvious that Maxwell Perkins was more than just a noted editor - he was a man with a deep and abiding love for his family." Dust jacket has soft crease along top edge of rear flap.
