SOPWITH SNIPE. WINDSOCK DATAFILE 46., Bruce, J.M. Foreword by R.L. Rimell. Drawings by C.A. Owers.
3 Bruce, J.M. Foreword by R.L. Rimell. Drawings by C.A. Owers. SOPWITH SNIPE. WINDSOCK DATAFILE 46.
Albatros, Berkhamsted, 1994.
36 pp, 11 5/8" H, soft cover (stapled in wraps). ISBN 0948414618 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, technical drawings/plans, colour profiles. "The Sopwith Snipe is firmly lodged in the minds of most WWI aeroplane enthusiasts due to the epic one-sided combat fought by Major William Barker on October 27 1918 in which he brought down four Fokker D.VIIs, an action that resulted in a well-earned Victoria Cross for the Canadian pilot. The Snipe had few other opportunities for glory; No .43 Squadron was the first unit to be equipped and made its first Snipe patrol on September 23 1918. Within five weeks nearly 100 Snipes were in France and No.208's Camels were in the process of being replaced by Snipes as the Armistice was dec l a r e d. In the immediate post-war period Snipes served with a dozen RAF Squadrons, 532 being recorded on charge by 1921, and the type soldiered on until 1928 when it was officially declared obsolete. Despite its necessarily limited role in the fi rs t ai r war the Snipe has been a popular choice for modellers and subject of at least two previous monographs and a nubmer of magazine articles. The 46th DATAFILE, however, offers the most comprehensive selection of illustrations on the type y et pub li she d in one volume and contains a great deal of information hitherto unrecorded." Interior - small soft bump at top/bottom corners of text block, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - small soft crease at c orn ers of cove rs. Very Good

STRIKE FROM THE SEA: A SURVEY OF BRITISH NAVAL AIR OPERATIONS, 1909-69., Jackson, Robert.
9 Jackson, Robert. STRIKE FROM THE SEA: A SURVEY OF BRITISH NAVAL AIR OPERATIONS, 1909-69.
Arthur Barker, London, 1970.
234 pp, 8vo 8 3/4" H, hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs. "On 19 July 1918, six Sopwith Camels took off from the flight deck of the aircraft carrier 'Furious' off the Schleswig coast. Their mission - to bomb the German Zeppelin sheds at Tondern. It was the first time in history that a force of aircraft had been launched against an enemy objective from an aircraft carrier: the first ever strike from the sea. In the half century that has elapsed since that historic day, the Royal Navy's airmen have carved out a reputation of courage and skill that is second to none. This is their story - a story of men and courage, of crews, aircraft and ships often hurled into battle against hopeless odds. The author has covered every major operation involving the Fleet Air Arm and its predecessor, the RNAS, including Korea, Suez, Malaya and forgotten 'backyard wars' such as the British naval operations against the Bolsheviks in the Baltic in 1919, when the Navy's airmen bombed the Red Fleet in Kronstadt. The Second World War is covered in detail, from the hunt for the 'Graf Spee' to the final assault on Japan and Kamikaze attacks on the carriers of the British Pacific Fleet." Water mark on top corner of text block with some small areas of dye migration into top corner of a few pages, minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has very light edge wear/wrinkling, light browning on spine, two small edge tears with old tape. Good+/Good+

11 Kirkby, Bruce. Foreword by Sir Wilfred Thesiger. SAND DANCE: BY CAMEL ACROSS ARABIA'S GREAT SOUTHERN DESERT.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 2000 0771095643 / 9780771095641 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
219 pp + glossary, selected bibliography& acknowledgements, 10" H. B&w map, colour photographs. "For forty days and forty nights during the winter of 1999, three Canadians along with three Omani Bedu, travelled by camel across Arabia's great southern desert - the legendary Empty Quarter. Journeying from Salala in Oman on the Arabian Sea, they headed north and east for 1,200 kilometres across remote and largely unexplored desert wilderness, where ranges of sand dunes tower to over three hundred metres in height. When they finally reached Abu Dhabi on the Persian Gulf, they were received as heroes. Theirs was the first camel crossing of the Empty Quarter in over fifty years. During the desert crossing the team was determined to travel and live as authentically as possible, on camels, taking Arabic names and wearing traditional clothing, drinking their water from rank goatskins and eating mainly unleavened bread and dried camel meat. The cultural insights they were afforded are constantly fascinating - but so are the cultural clashes, since the party was often followed by Land Cruisers full of well-meaning supporters who threatened to destroy the spirit of the journey. Now Bruce Kirkby has written a thoughtful and deeply felt account of this challenging expedition - and has illustrated it with twenty-four pages of his stunning colour photographs." Very slight small bump on fore-edge of rear board, very slight lean to spine, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wear, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing.

12 Klose, Fritz, Ex-Legionary. Translated by Claud W. Sykes. THE LEGION MARCHES: THE WOES AND WRONGS OF THE FOREIGN LEGION.
London John Hamilton Hard Cover Good-
287 pp, 8 3/4" H. No date, but 1935 has been pencilled on the title page under the translator's name. Red cloth with gilt lettering on spine and front board. 20 b&w plates (29 b&w photographs) - collated. "On every possible occasion France boasts of being a loving mother to her adopted children - whom she has rescued from hunger and misery to lead along the paths of glory and fame. Court-martials, brutal treatment, heavy sentences for trifling offences, callous doctors, and unspeakable sanitary conditons, all combine to tell a different tale. 'Marche ou creve!' Give your last ounce of strength or break down! 'Honneur, valeur et discipline!' are also embroidered in gold and silver letters on the Legion's banners - at least on those of the original regiments. The word 'discipline' has now acquired such a notorious significance in the Legion that on the standards of newly-formed regiments it is replaced by 'fidelite'. But when the Legion goes on active service the old principle of 'marche ou creve' still holds good. The following chapters will prove the truth of my assertions that 'la grande nation' rewards the superhuman efforts of her legionaries with the basest ingratitude." From the Preface. Previous owner's small name stamp on front pastedown, book is cracked at two places - pages are holding firmly, light to moderate edge wear with wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, slight fading to spine color, various size water marks on boards and spine, splashes of dye from board cloth on fore edge of text block, slight corner bumps.

Toronto McClelland and Stewart 1963 0771047053 / 9780771047053 Reprint Soft Cover Good+
239 pp, 8" H. "In the 1960s, Margaret Laurence set out for Somaliland in Africa with her engineer husband in the hope that friendliness and a liberal outlook would suffice to bridge the differences between East and West. But she soon began to discover the complexity and difficulty in any attempted communication between peoples of widely different cultures, religions, and ways of looking at life. Living out in camp, the author gradually came to know something of the life of the nomadic camel-herding Somalis, and to have a deep regard for these desert people who must struggle incessantly for survival in their barren land, but who manage also to produce many skilled orators, poets, and storytellers. Of all this, Mrs. Laurence writes delightfully; with humour, keen observation and humanity, with vivid descriptions of the country and the Somalis she met." Interior - tiny tear to bottom edge of bibliography page (archivally taped), otherwise clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - light edgewear, soft crease down front cover near hinge, soft crease at rear bottom corner, spine flat and uncreased.
