THE DIARY OF A STAFF OFFICER (AIR INTELLIGENCE LIAISON OFFICER) AT ADVANCED HEADQUARTERS, NORTH B.A.F.F. 1940.
1 THE DIARY OF A STAFF OFFICER (AIR INTELLIGENCE LIAISON OFFICER) AT ADVANCED HEADQUARTERS, NORTH B.A.F.F. 1940.
London Methuen 1941 Sixth Editiion Good- Fair
79 pp, small 8vo (7 1/2" H). B&w maps. "This diary is reproduced exactly as written at the time of the events it records in France, with the exception of some omissions and a few minor alterations necessary in the interests of security. Its sole interest rests in the simple sequence of entries that accumulate and combine finally to illustrate the immeasurable complications and infinite reactions of the short campaign in France as jotted down by an independent witness. The diary may, perhaps, help readers grasp even more clearly than they do already from following events in the Press, the accumulation of weight, both political and military, that piled up during the first phase of this universal warfare to handicap the commanders of the British Expeditionary Force and the British Air Forces in France." Previous owner's name in ink on front free endpaper; very light browning to pages; browning to endpapers, edges of text block and boards; one page with a dog-ear crease; a few pages with either pen underlining and/or marginalia; one small corner bump; book cocked; light edge wear; slight wrinkling at top/bottom of spine; small area of colour fading due to dampness at bottom of front hinge - a few tiny faded areas elswhere; small bump at bottom of rear hinge. Dust jacket has chips, corner creases, browning, soiling and staining, watermarks/staining on inside of rear panel/hinge, soft wrinkles.

7 Corrigan, Gordon. MUD, BLOOD AND POPPYCOCK: BRITAIN AND THE FIRST WORLD WAR.
London Cassell 2003 0304359556 / 9780304359554 First Edition Very Good+ Very Good
431 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w maps, photographs, diagrams. "The First World War was a unique experience for the United Kingdom: the only time Britain fielded a mass army that opposed the main enemy in the primary theatre of war. One consequence of this 'continental commitment' was that Britain suffered many more casualties in 1914-18 than in the Second World War, a factor that has coloured post-1945 attitudes to 'the Great War'. Yet, as Gordon Corrigan reveals, the First World War was neither unnecessary nor badly conducted - two claims made with such frequency in the 1960s that they became the new orthodoxy. The British Army did make mistakes during the First World War, but most were honest errors made by men as well trained and as well prepared as they could be, given the unprecedented expansion of the pre-1914 army into a force of over three million men and women. (He has) come to the conclusion that Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig, far from being the 'butcher and bungler' of popular belief, was the man who took a tiny British army and expanded it, trained it and prepared it, until it was the only Allied army capable of defeating the Germans militarily in 1918." Very slight cigarette odor, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling, very light rubbing.

BRIDGES OF BATTLE: FAMOUS BATTLEFIELD ACTIONS AT BRIDGES AND RIVER CROSSINGS., Featherstone, Donald.
8 Featherstone, Donald. BRIDGES OF BATTLE: FAMOUS BATTLEFIELD ACTIONS AT BRIDGES AND RIVER CROSSINGS.
London Arms and Armour 1998 1854094491 / 9781854094490 First Edition Very Good+ Very Good+
256 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w plates. "From more than 2,000 years of military history, (the author) has selected some one hundred examples of battles centred on river crossings. They range in size fom small-scale actions such as the battle for Powick Bridge in the early months of the English Civil War to massive, army-scale operations including the final crossing of the Rhine at Remagen during the Second World War. One of the biggest battles during the Napoleonic Wars - indeed, the biggest battle to that date with more than 300,000 men in combat - was fought across the Danube in 1809, culminating in the battle of Wagram. Later, as Napoleon's fortunes began to ebb, there took place the desperate and tragic crossing of the Berezina in 1812 when Napoleon's depleted army, retreating from Moscow, fought to cross the freezing river to escape the pursuing and encirling Russians and the hell of a Russian winter. The American Civil War also provides many examples of battles for river crossings, such as First Bull Run, the opening engagement of the war, the fight for Burnside's Bridge at Antietam and the Battle of the Big Black River during the riverine campaign for Vicksburg. Other, often lesser-known, actions are also to be found in this book, including tales of desperate courage from the Indian Mutiny and other British colonial wars. The range of contributions, including expert analyses and eyewitness accounts often enables the reader to see both sides of the story - those of the defender and the attacker - and to compare battles fought in similar circumstances, but with very different weapons, across the centuries." A few faint scuffs on the front board. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, one small edge tear archivally taped.

Grange, London, 1996, reprint.
214 pp, large 8vo (9 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1856279065 B&w photographs. "These echoes from the early days of tank warfare give an idea of the crucial role that tanks played in breaking the murderous stalemate on the Western Fron t. This influence was acknowledged by friend and foe alike and, while not decisive, it certainly hastened the end of that dreadful conflict, saving thousands of Allied lives and ushering in a new era of mechanised warfare. (The editor) d r a w s h i s m aterial exclusively from the archives of the world famous Tank Museum at Bovington Camp, Dorset. His linking narrative guides us through the war, battle by battle, from 15 September 1916 to the Armistice, using firsthand accounts of t he t a nk a ct i on s, extracts from unit war diaries and other primary sources. Many of these accounts are previously unpublished or have had limited circulation, providing us with a fresh and vivid insight into the early days of tank warf are . A w eal th of or igi na l p hotographs showing the tanks and their crews both in action and at rest support these vivid accounts. Their relevance is further enhanced by a selection of contemporary aerial reconnaissance photographs revealing the t opog raph y o f th e la ndsc ape ove r which many of the battles were fought." 15 Gilbert, Martin. THE BATTLE OF THE SOMME: THE HEROISM AND HORROR OF WAR.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 2006 0771035470 / 9780771035470 First Canadian Edition. Very Good+ Very Good+
332 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs, maps. "(O)n 1 July 1916, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, 733 of 801 men in the 1st Newfoundland Regiment were killed. From their starting position in a British support trench, the Newfoundlanders had to cross some 230 metres of fire-swept ground before they reached their own front line. In less than a half-hour, it was all over. The divisional commander wrote of the Newfoundland effort: 'It was a magnificent display of trained and disciplined valour, and its assault failed of success because dead men can advance no further.' Well might the Germans refer to the Battle of the Somme as das Blutbad - the bloodbath. From 1 July to 15 November 1916, a period of just 138 days, more than 310,000 soldiers from four great armies, the British, Canadian, French, and German, were killed. The German death toll on the Somme was larger than that of all the Allied forces combined. The heroism of the Dominion troops moved British prime minister David Lloyd George to write: 'The Canadians played a part of such distinction that thenceforth they were marked as storm troops. Coming into the line, they prepared for the worst.' After four and a half months of fighting, the Allied armies had not reached the line they set for themselves for the first day of battle. In this vivid, deeply researched account of one of history's most destructive battles, (the author) tracks (it) through the experiences of footsoldiers, generals, and everyone in between. Interwoven with photographs, journal entries, original maps, and documents from every stage and level of planning, (this book) is the most authoritative and affecting account of this bloody turning point in the Great War." Slight cigarette odor. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

Godalming Bramley 1998 1841000124 / 9781841000121 Reprint Very Good Very Good
214 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H). B&w plates, maps/battle plans. "(A) forceful and probing analysis of the British generals' leadership. For too long, Dr John Laffin maintains, the military reputation of the generals has not been critically enough examined, and he asks how those responsible for such catastrophic defeats were able to retain their commands. Haig, whose army suffered 60,000 casualties on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, was still in command after five months more fighting and another 400,000 casualties. By the war's end the number of dead ran into millions - doggedly brave British Empire soldiers who, Dr Laffin believes, were killed, wounded or broken by commanders who were vain, egocentric or incompetent. But the generals, who blamed the dead and junior in rank, cannot be excused on the grounds that there was 'nothing else that they could do'. Een now, seventy years after that 'Great War for Civilization', this book raises questions that are uncomfortable. Dr Laffin draws on the memories and writings of those who took part and quotes the judgements of other military historians to provide a lucid analysis of just what went wrong in the generals' leadership and how it resulted in such appalling and tragic losses - and concludes that they were not merely incompetent but uncaring. Controversial and uncompromising, this intelligent and important book is an invaluable addition to the history of World War I and will be read by all interested in this period of history and its influence on succeeding military campaigns." Small bump at top corner of both boards. Dust jacket has wrinkling at top of flap-folds.
