Michael Joseph, London, 1981, first edtion.
206 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0718120396 Charming b&w illustrations. "There is a growing need for the 'quiet fields' in this noisy, restless world. Mercifully, they can still be found by the country-lover and naturalist . This book tells of a year spent deep in the countryside, beginning when the year is young, when trees and hedges are bare to the winter winds, and on through the spring, summer and autumn, to winter once again. Whatever the season of t h e y e a r t h ere is always something to see in the countryside, even when the 'quiet fields' are sheeted with snow. There are the winter migrants - the wildfowl of the wet places, the delicate fieldfares and redwings - who come to Britain to e sc ap e t he b it t er t emperatures of their native lands. 'BB' also describes the advent of the spring migrants, which bring such intense joy to the naturalist that he even had to surrender his studio to a swallow family, which honoured him wi th a v is it and tw o l us ty bro ods of young. And the arrival of frogs at his Big Pond, the first for years, was a red-letter day in his calendar. There is still magic and a sense of peace in Britain's woods and fields. This book sets out to p rov e it , a nd the illu stra tio ns by D .J. Watkins-Pitchford echo exactly the spirit of the writing...." Approx. 11 3/8" H x 8" W. This calendar was an advertising piece for Moote & Hodgson Limited of Orangeville, Ontario. On the reverse are additional recipes following that month's theme and a tip from Betty Baker. The calendar cover consists of a folded sheet (just over 6 1/2" H at the front) with a pasted on colour picture of a fisherman and the company details on the front. The full-sized rear section has a form for filling in the "Household Budget" on the inside (unused) and information on "Home Freezing - Fruits and Vegetables" on the reverse. The monthly recipe themes are: January - Sandwiches Supreme; February - Soup So Warm; March - Fish 'n' Things; April - Meat Miracles; May - Good ol' Cookie; June - Delectable Vegetables; July - Dessert Magic; August - Beverage Coolers; September - Countdown on Coffee Cakes; October - Thanksgiving Delights; November - Fashionable Meat Dishes; December - Salads Superb. London Stamp Exchange, London, 1989, facsimile edition.
148 pp, 6 13/16" H, hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0948130628 "This little Victorian gem was (first) published in 1854, the first year of the Crimean War....The accounts of the battles are cursory, but the real fascination of the book lies in the biographical details of some two hundred officers who were killed or who died in those first few months of the war, written as they are in that flowery Victorian prose. They contain a great deal that would be of interest to the historian, genealogist and researcher as well as to regimental records. There is a separate list of officers wounded, divided in two parts; one for those wounded up to Balaklava (25th October) and the other for subsequent casualties. Finally there is a calendar for 1854 detailing incidents of the war." Three corners with tiny bump, two small rubs on gold fore-edge of textblock, rear board fore-edge extends 1/8" beyond front board fore-edge (manufactured this way), small excess paper at bottom corner of front pastedown, tiny corner crease on free front endpaper. Dust jacket has one tiny tear, minor edge wrinkling. VG/VG+
