DOGS OF CHARACTER., Aldin, Cecil, written and illustrated by.
1 Aldin, Cecil, written and illustrated by. DOGS OF CHARACTER.
London Bracken 1986 1851700498 / 9781851700493 Reprint of 1927 Edition. Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good - Cecil Aldin.
116 pp, small 4to (10 3/4" H). Beautifully illustrated throughout in black, white and buff with Cecil Aldin's wonderful dog portraits. "This book is about ordinary dogs - dogs of character. In particular it charts the lives of Cracker and Micky, one an Irish Wolfhound, the other a Bull terrier. With them as models Cecil Aldin plots a course for would-be dog owners and dog trainers. Where do you go to buy a dog, how do you set about training him or her, how do you cure bad habits, how do you feed your dog. All these questions are answered. But this book contains a good deal more. It is full of the most enchanting stories of dogs. It is full of advice and stories told by a real lover of dogs and the advice is as true and revealing now as when the book was first published in 1927." Light edge wear, light browning to edges of text block with foxing specks on top of text block, light wrinkling at bottom of spine, light browning to pages. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine, very light rubbing, one tiny closed tear, foxing on inside surface - mainly at top edge, light fading to spine colour.

3 Barris, Ted. RODEO COWBOYS: THE LAST HEROES.
Edmonton, Alberta Executive Sport Publications 1981 0919035094 / 9780919035096 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good Photography by Robert Semeniuk.
144 pp, oblong (8 9/16" H x 10 1/16" D. Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w photographs. "Rodeo is perhaps the world's greatest test of physical endurance and raw heroism. It is the participant, the cowboy, who has excited both young and old for decades. Year in and year out, these men test their strength against the power of animals in such rodeo events as steer wrestling and bronc riding. Sometimes they are rewarded for their efforts by a winning time, but often they receive little more than the appreciative applause of an enthusiastic audience before heading down the road to the next rodeo. What motivates these men to keep up such a grueling schedule? What has kept the tradition alive for so long? Through the combined effort of a gifted writer and an expert photographer, the exciting and entertaining world of the rodeo cowboy comes alive." Minor edge wear. Dust jacket has very light rubbing, minor edge wrinkling - crease at bottom edge of rear flap.

THE INVASION OF CANADA, 1812-1813., Berton, Pierre.
4 Berton, Pierre. THE INVASION OF CANADA, 1812-1813.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1980 0771012357 / 9780771012358 Limited First Edition, Specially Bound. Hard Cover Near Fine Tom McNeely, endpapers.
363 pp, 9 3/4" H. Pictorial endpapers, maps/battle plans. Blue (faux?) leather spine with gilt lettering & decoration, gray boards with blue decoration on front board. "This first edition copy - is one of a limited number (unspecified) which have been specially bound and slipcased" from the copyright page. " To America's leaders in 1812, an invasion of Canada seemed the best way to bloody John Bull's nose. It would, as Thomas Jefferson confidently predicted, be 'a mere matter of marching'. How could a nation of eight million fail to subdue a struggling colony of 300,000? Yet, when the campaign of 1812 ended on the bloody banks of the River Raisin, the only Americans left on Canadian soil were prisoners of war. Three American armies had been forced to surrender, and the British were in control of all of Michigan Territory and much of Indiana and Ohio. Drawing on personal memoirs and diaries as well as official dispatches, the author has been able to get inside the characters of the men who fought the war - the common soldier as well as the generals. (C)owards and heroes, flawed generals and bumbling bureaucrats, traitors, loyalists, war profiteers, military incompetents and geniuses. (T)he War of 1812, or more properly the myth of the war, served to give the new settlers (of Upper Canada) a sense of community and set them on a different course from that of their neighbours. The Canadian way of life, says Berton, has its roots in the invasion of Canada." Tiny area of glue residue at the edge of the rear board leather. Slipcase has a tiny edge scuff on rear panel, a few very small minor soiling marks on front panel.

RHODESIAN PERSPECTIVE., Bull, Theodore, editor.
9 Bull, Theodore, editor. RHODESIAN PERSPECTIVE.
London Michael Joseph 1967 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
184 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). Map endpapers, fold-out map showing land apportionment in 1965. "The first and major portion of this book consists of a factual account of some of the more important political, social and economic developments in Britain's colony of Southern Rhodesia from the time of the first European occupation to the present day. It draws on historical records, official reports and government statements to explain what the Land Apportionment Act is, why it was introduced, and what its practical effects are; to examine local government, the educational systems, and economic development in urban and rural areas; to analyse the effect which some of the past and present legislation has on the living and working conditions of black and white Rhodesians; and, in the process, to illustrate the political attitudes of Europeans and Africans, and the separate development of the racial communities. (It) collates much of the kind of factual material which used to appear regularly in the Salisbury journal, the 'Central African Examiner', before it ceased publication. UDI and the censorship imposed under the Emergency regulations in November, 1965, resulted in the 'Examiner's' December issue being heavily cut - about half the material submitted for censorship was banned. The journal's publishing company launched a court case to challenge the legality of censorship and so, by implication, of the Rhodesian regime, but this was unsuccessful and the December 1965 issue was therefore (its) last. The factual material in this book was prepared by former contributors to the 'Examiner' and edited by Theodore Bull, the sponsor and former editor of the journal. His own personal assessment of British policy on Rhodesia, before and since UDI, and the likely outcome of the present deadlock, forms the second part of the book. His conclusions are controversial, and readers of widely differing political views could be equally shocked by them, but they may stimulate a healthy reassessment of attitude towards the whole unhappy Rhodesian situation." Previous owner's place, date and signature on free front endpaper; slight bump at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, slight browning on spine and flap-folds, very light rubbing.

13 Creighton, Helen. Edited with an introduction by Michael Taft and Ronald Caplan. A FOLK TALE JOURNEY THROUGH THE MARITIMES.
Wreck Cove, Cape Breton Island Breton Books 1993 1895415284 / 9781895415285 Soft Cover Very Good
249 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs. "These are the folk tales from Dr. Helen Creighton's life journey through the Maritime Provinces, collecting songs and ghost stories and old cures - and folk tales. Helen serves as our guide, introducing us to storytellers, setting the scene of the telling - and then she lets the person tell it as they told it to her. The feel of the kitchen and the fish shed still cling to these stories. Some are long, really miraculous folk tales - miraculous in detail and in that they managed to survive. Others are the brief riddle or the tantalizing quick-telling that a folklorist can expect along the way. Helen kept it all. And read as a whole, the reality and intensity of those smaller pieces reveals their value in among the more finished, well-told tales. (This) is a Maritime treasure." Interior - crease at bottom corner of page leaf 89/90, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - slight bump at top of spine, minor rubbing, minor soft crease at top corner of rear cover.

BRIDGES OF BATTLE: FAMOUS BATTLEFIELD ACTIONS AT BRIDGES AND RIVER CROSSINGS., Featherstone, Donald.
17 Featherstone, Donald. BRIDGES OF BATTLE: FAMOUS BATTLEFIELD ACTIONS AT BRIDGES AND RIVER CROSSINGS.
London Arms and Armour 1998 1854094491 / 9781854094490 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
256 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w plates. "From more than 2,000 years of military history, (the author) has selected some one hundred examples of battles centred on river crossings. They range in size fom small-scale actions such as the battle for Powick Bridge in the early months of the English Civil War to massive, army-scale operations including the final crossing of the Rhine at Remagen during the Second World War. One of the biggest battles during the Napoleonic Wars - indeed, the biggest battle to that date with more than 300,000 men in combat - was fought across the Danube in 1809, culminating in the battle of Wagram. Later, as Napoleon's fortunes began to ebb, there took place the desperate and tragic crossing of the Berezina in 1812 when Napoleon's depleted army, retreating from Moscow, fought to cross the freezing river to escape the pursuing and encirling Russians and the hell of a Russian winter. The American Civil War also provides many examples of battles for river crossings, such as First Bull Run, the opening engagement of the war, the fight for Burnside's Bridge at Antietam and the Battle of the Big Black River during the riverine campaign for Vicksburg. Other, often lesser-known, actions are also to be found in this book, including tales of desperate courage from the Indian Mutiny and other British colonial wars. The range of contributions, including expert analyses and eyewitness accounts often enables the reader to see both sides of the story - those of the defender and the attacker - and to compare battles fought in similar circumstances, but with very different weapons, across the centuries." A few faint scuffs on the front board. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, one small edge tear archivally taped.

479 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). Map endpapers. "When the tide of battle surged over the slopes of Little Bighorn, and Sitting Bull's braves gathered for the final charge that would sweep away the gallant remnant of Custer's 7th Cavalry, a clarion voice was heard above the crash of shots and whistle of arrows, the war-whoops and the pounding hooves: - Readers of his previous adventures will not fail to identify the speaker, or to recognise the tall, distinguished figure in evening dress, tails and whiskers, fleeing the stricken field: Sir Harry Flashman, V.C., veteran of countless retreats from battle and bedchamber, the most decorated coward of the Victorian age, was meeting his fate with the same matchless poltroonery and deafness to duty and decency which had sustained him through a lifetime of dishonourable service, and endeared him to a generation of readers. But how the arch-cad of Dr Arnold's Rugby found himself in the climactic struggle of the American West is only one chapter in an odyssey as hair-raising and scandalous as any in his six earlier volumes of memoirs. He traces it with his usual shameless candour and caustic humour, from the wagon-trains of the Forty-Niners, when he foug ht his terrified way across the Plains in command of a bordello on wheels, to the holocaust of Bent's Fort and the horrors of scalp-hunting raids, Apache warpaths, dinner parties with Custer, captivity among the Sioux, confrontations with President Grant and Wild Bill Hickock, duels, escapes, conspiracies, and shoot-outs - to say nothing of passionate encounters with Indian belles, dusky beauties, enthusiastic widows, and mysterious adventuresses. This is Flashy's West as only he can describe it - the West, at once legendary and authentic, of Mangas Colorado and Kit Carson, of Custer and Spotted Tail, of Crazy Horse and the Deadwood stage, a pageant of savage warriors and Mountain Men, glory-hunting soldiers and gunfighters, gamblers, eccentrics, scoundrels, and those extraordinary folk, white and Indian, who broke the trails or resisted the invasion." Slight ridge down centre of spine, some light toning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has very light browning on spine, flap-folds and top part of panels; minor edge wrinkling.
