PERSIAN ART. CALOUSTE GULBENKIAN COLLECTION., Ettinghausen, Richard, introduction.
1 Ettinghausen, Richard, introduction. PERSIAN ART. CALOUSTE GULBENKIAN COLLECTION.
Fundacao Calouste Gulbenkian, Lisboa, 1972.
Unpaginated, 4to (12 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket with additional clear mylar cover. Introductory essay plus colour and b&w illustrations with captions. "This Album, published on the occasion of the celebrations of the 2500th Anniversary of the Iranian Monarchy, presents a selection of the Persian works of art in the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum from the sections of Ceramics, Textiles and Artistic Books. The criterion adopted for this selection was, generally speaking, the quality and a esthetic value of the items included and, for some of them, their rarity as well. In the Ceramics and Textiles sections the mains centres of production are represented, such as Rayy, Kashan, Tabriz, Herat and Isfahan, and in the Artistic B o o k s s e c t ion the important schools of Shiraz and Mashhad, as well as some fine specimens of 17th century bindings." Very Light browning in margins of pages and on edges of textblock, minor rubbing. Very Good/Very Good+

THIS IS RUSSIA AND CENTRAL ASIAN REPUBLICS OF THE SOVIET UNION., Simpson, Colin.
2 Simpson, Colin. THIS IS RUSSIA AND CENTRAL ASIAN REPUBLICS OF THE SOVIET UNION.
Hodder and Stoughton, London, 1965, first edition.
513 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Pictorial endpapers, colour and b&w photographs, maps, decorations. "....not just a travel book, nor is it just Russia, or Russia Now. It is a revelation of the Communist Way, the Other Way in this divided world. It is a journey in understanding via not only Leningrad and Moscow, Kiev and such cities of Soviet Asia as Sukhara, Alma-Ata, and - Samarkand, but via the extraordinary essential history, via the Men from Hell - the Tartars, via the Czars of All the Russias (terrible Ivan, giant Peter, Catherine, the idiots), via Karl Marx, Rasputin, the Revolutions, Lenin (the real Lenin), Stalin (his evil documented). It answers Why/How/What is Communism? and What is Russia Really Li ke? The answers are clear, perceptive, disturbing, and without commitment except to the truth about this astonishing society where atheists keep Communist Commandments that point the problem of the Two Moralities, Purtians frown at stretch - p a n t s , h otels are barless, and rich writers carless. The Party Plan for rentless flats and fareless trains gives food for thought. And you are richly entertained when the author takes you to the Kremlin, to people at home, to the ballet a t th e Bo ls ho i, in to Red Square for the feting of the spacemen. And down to the republics of Tajik, Uzbek, Kazakh, in a journey so different and so illuminating." Very light browning to fore-edge of textblock, very faint foxing marks on board s, mi no r w rin kli ng a t t op/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, very light rubbing, a few tiny foxing marks on inside surface. Very Good/Very Good-
