University of California Press, Berkeley, 1996.
244 pp, 8vo (9" H), soft cover. ISBN 0520203240 "What does it mean to worship beings that one believes are completely indifferent to, and entirely beyond the reach of, any form of worship whatsoever? What are the implications of such a relationsh ip with sacred beings for the religious life of a community? Using these questions as his point of departure, Babb explores the ritual culture of image-worshiping Svetambar Jains. Jainism is, aside from Buddhism, the only surviving exampl e o f I n d i a's ancient non-Vedic religious traditions. It is known and celebrated for its systematic practice of non-violence and for the rigor of the asceticism it promotes. 'Absent Lords' sheds light on a little-known religious tradition an d d em on s tr at es t hat divine 'absence' can be as rich as divine 'presence' in its possibilities for informing a religious response to the cosmos." THE MAGICAL ARTS: A SHORT HISTORY, Burland, C. A.
5 Burland, C. A. THE MAGICAL ARTS: A SHORT HISTORY
London Arthur Barker 1966 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good+
196 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H). B&w illustrations. "From the earliest time man has been fascinated by visions and dreams, and by the discovery that there were men who could, by magical powers, improve a crop or foretell the weather. As civilization grew there were demands for knowledge which would give control over other men or protection from the wiles of enemies. The study of magic and counter magic became important in the policy of states. Later magic was denounced as a work of the Devil, and then the Devil himself was demoted to become a laughing stock. Yet even nowadays there exist in the most advanced nations societies devoted to magical practices, who deal in strange rituals, and promote the interests of their membership against all enemies. A careful study shows that there is a good deal of scientific knowledge involved in the vast and complex network of 'magical' practice today. This book sets out to show some of the main lines of influence which have led to the present traditions. It treats the subject as if if were a tapestry of many strands each of which has a line of origin from which it traverses like a weft thread on the warp of universal psychological experience. This book is a short history of a complex development. It is planned as a groundwork from which the interested reader can advance to further detailed studies." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine, small slight bump at top corner of both boards. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear, a few small closed tears, jacket has been laminated for protection and to prevent further deterioration over the center portion (panels, spine and flap-folds).

Delhi Motilal Banarsidass 2000 8120813553 / 9788120813557 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good -
300 pp, large 8vo (9 3/4" H). "(C)ontains a metrical English rendering of an important Buddhist work in Pali named the 'Sutta-Nipata' with the original text in Romanized version on the opposite page. The Pali Canon, as it has come down to us, is divided into three Pitakas or 'baskets', viz. Vinaya-Pitaka, Sutta-Pitaka and Abhidhamma-Pitaka. The Sutta-Nipata, translated here, contains an ancient, probably the most ancient, part of the Sutta- Pitaka. It belongs to that portion of the Sutta-Pitaka which is named Khuddaka Nikaya or 'Collection of Short Treatises' as distinct from the four long Nikayas called Digha, Majjhima, Samyutta and Anguttara. Of the five Vaggas (or 'books') of the present Sutta-Nipata the fifth stands out from its fellows by reason of its purposeful unity. While the Uraga, Maha, Cula and Atthaka Vaggas consist each of a collection of independent and unconnected poems (sometimes interspersed with prose) called 'Suttas', the Parayana aims at a dramatic synthesis. Its prologue and epilogue serve as a setting for the sixteen Questions which elicit Gotama's gradual exposition of the saving 'Way Across'." Faint discoloration on cloth boards. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, one small tear with creases taped, light rubbing, soft crease on spine, very small label from bookstore on front flap.

From the Ashanti comes the moving account of the grief-stricken Kwasi Benefo's journey to the underworld to seek his beloved wives. From Uganda we learn of the legendary Kintu, who won the love of a goddess and created a nation from a handful of isolated clans. The Congo's epic hero Mwindo is the sacred warrior who shows us the path each person must travel to discover his true destiny. Many myths reveal the intimacy of human and animal spirits, and Ford also explores the archetypal forces of the 'orishas' - the West African deities that were carried to the Americas in the Africa diaspora." New York E.P. Dutton 1987 0525242104 / 9780525242109 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
373 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w photographs, map. "The time, January-November 1963. The place: Saigon. The circumstances: a fledgling nation being subverted from inside and out, and a set of treacherous Vietnamese generals and arrogant, blundering high officials of the Kennedy administration. The result: the assassination of South Vietnamese President Ngo Dinh Diem and his brother Ngo Dinh Nhu in a military coup that turned the Vietnam War in to an American war and set in motion an ever-widening tragedy. This riveting inside chronicle of a single year is not only an awesome task of research but a cautionary tale for all Americans. Dr. Hammer, who visited the embattled nation many time s during the period and interviewed key characters in the drama, cuts away layer after layer of double-talk to expose the cancer of incomprehension and mistrust that killed all hopes of preserving the independence of South Vietnam. Without ever calling names or placing blame the author is everywhere, probing, digging, uncovering - letting history render its own verdict. When November 1963 was over, both the Vietnamese and American presidents had died at the hands of assassins. No one but ( the author) could have summoned up the ghost of Ngo Dinh Diem with such power or demonstrated so poignantly its significance for our larger involvement in Vietnam." 150 pp, small 4to (10 5/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0870112864 Profusely illustrated with b&w and color photographs. "A vital, rich tradition for over eight centuries, Japanese portrait sculpture is an art that has been unjustly ignor ed by the West. This book, the first in a Western language devoted solely to the subject, constitutes a major step in the transition from indifference to appreciation....(it) illuminates the principal characteristics and eccentricities of t h i s a r t , concisely delineating its social setting and historical and stylistic development. An intelligent discussion of individual works completes the picture, allowing the reader to evaluate, for the first time, the range and depth of th is l on g- n eg le ct ed art. Many of the obscurities of Japanese portrait sculpture are derived from its birth and development within the traditions of Buddhist sculpture. The use of statues as objects of worship, the depositing within them of com mem ora tiv e and vo tiv e o bjects, and their placement in 'portrait halls' - all these aspects of the Buddhist background are clarified in this book, giving the reader a full, insightful understanding of Japanese portrait sculpture....Lay scu lptu re d iver ged fr om t he m ains trea m of Buddhist sculpture in the thirteenth century, and though it is more easily understood than Buddhist portraiture, this books' knowlegeable description of its origins and development will greatly facilita te it s app recia tion ." MOUNTAINS AND A MONASTERY., Holmes, Peter.
20 Holmes, Peter. MOUNTAINS AND A MONASTERY.
Geoffrey Bles, London, 1958, first edition.
191 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, 2 fold-out maps. "Spiti is a mountainous desert province, on the borders of Tibet, inhabited by a backward hill-folk whose way of life has not changed in a thousand years. It was there, in the village of Ranrik, that Peter Holmes, his wife Judy and their party met Shiring Dawa, the twelve-year-old boy who by his determination had escaped the fate of younger sons in Spiti - to be shut up in the Buddhist monastery at t h e a g e of eight and to remain there for the rest of their lives. The author was struck with Shiring's exceptional intelligence and his ability to grasp facts which were beyond the imagination of most of the villagers, and through him was able to l e ar n a g reat deal about village life and the influence exerted by the monastery. Spiti, however, was only one stage on their journey, and Peter Holmes goes on to describe some hair-raising adventures in the Himalayas. They succeeded in sc ali ng se ver al f or midable mountains not before attempted and Peter Holmes' photographic record of the expedition has provided many unusual illustrations for this delightful book about the Himalayas and the people who live in them."
