2 Cheadle, Walter B. Introduction and notes by A.G. Doughty and Gustave Lanctot. Introduction to new edition by Lewis H. Thomas. CHEADLE'S JOURNAL OF TRIP ACROSS CANADA, 1862-1863.
Edmonton M.G. Hurtig 1971 0888300352 / 9780888300355 First Thus Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
311 pp, 7 5/8" H. B&w illustrations, fold-out map at rear."The incredible journey of William Fitzwilliam, Viscount Milton, and his long-suffering companion, Dr. Walter Butler Cheadle, over the uncharted Yellowhead route in 1862-63 was a highly improbable, miraculously successful expedition, well-seasoned with comic relief though it very nearly ended several times in tragedy. Dr. Cheadle's 'Journal' first appeared in 1931, sixty-six years after publication of 'The North-West Passage by Land', a bestselling account of the expedition supposedly co-authored by the young Lord Milton and his companion. Besides confirming suspicions that the first book was in fact Cheadle's, the 'Journal' is more candid about the two adventurer's motives ('we were a mere party of pleasure'), and a much more precise record of life and travel in the Northwest during the latter days of the fur trade era. Cheadle acknowledges the heavy debt owed by all of the early explorers to the plains Indians, who passed on to the first white men their sophistication in the ways of the wilderness. He also records the gradual demoralization of the native people under the impact of European culture. His own Assiniboine guide was an invaluable support to Cheadle, who had to cope not only with Lord Milton's constant petulance and frequent illness, but with the most obnoxious hitchhiker ever to cross the Rockies." On or two small faint areas of browning on edges of text block. Dust jacket has light edge wear and tiny tears/creases - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds (archivally taped), slight fading to spine color, faint small writing impressions on front panel.

3 David, Jennifer, ed. Foreword by Hon. William G. Davis. WIND, WATER, ROCK AND SKY: THE STORY OF COGNASHENE, GEORGIAN BAY.
Toronto Cognashene Book Corporation 1997 0968189504 / 9780968189504 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good + Very Good-
191 pp, oblong (9 3/4" H x 11 3/4" D). Map endpapers, b&w and colour photographs, reproductions. "In the spectacular expanse of wind, water, rock and sky that is Georgian Bay, there is only one Cognashene . Historically rich, geographically gorgeous, shaped by colourful characters and events, Cognashene's allure is as powerful today as it was for the first hardy souls to arrive at its scenic shores. (This book) celebrates the uniquely Canadian island community and traces its dramatic journey from its native roots, through its industrial development to its days of pioneer settlement. In these pages you'll meet Champlain and his young protege, Etienne Brule. You'll find out what it took to be a success - or a failure! - in the lumber days. You can settle in for a visit at Longuissa, Whalen's or Blarney Castle, or, if it's Sunday - and you're so inclined - stop by the Church on the Rocks. And you'll discover throughout the breathtaking beauty that has captivated countless artists, including A.Y. Jackson and other members of the Group of Seven. Part historical document, part warm-hearted slice-of-cottage-life, (it) reveals a distinctive and winning personality. It is, quite simply, the essence of Cognashene." Dust jacket has tiny edge tear and minor wear at top of rear hinge area, minor browning on inside top/bottom edges, light fading to color on rear flap-fold and on bottom edge of rear flap, moderate color fading on front flap-fold and on bottom edge of front flap, minor rubbing on rear panel.

THE ART OF CLAIRTONE: THE MAKING OF A DESIGN ICON 1958-1971., Munk, Nina and Gotlieb, Rachel. Foreword by Samantha Sannella.
6 Munk, Nina and Gotlieb, Rachel. Foreword by Samantha Sannella. THE ART OF CLAIRTONE: THE MAKING OF A DESIGN ICON 1958-1971.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart / Design Exchange 2008 0771065078 / 9780771065071 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
171 pp, oblong (9" H x 10 1/4" D). "For a decade, in the 1960s, Clairtone Sound Corporation captured the spirit of the times: sophisticated, cosmopolitan, liberated. From its modern oiled-walnut and teak stereos to its minimalist logos and promotional materials, Clairtone produced a powerful and enduring body of design work. Founded in 1958 by two young Canadians, Peter Munk and David Gilmour, Clairtone quickly became known for its iconic designs and masterful advertising campaigns. Its acclaimed Project G stereo, with its space-age styling, epitomized the Swinging Sixties. Famously, Hugh Hefner owned a Project G. So did Frank Sinatra. Oscar Peterson affirmed that his music sounded as good on a G as it did live. In 1967, suggesting how deeply Clairtone's G series had come to be identified with popular culture, the G2 appeared in 'The Graduate' with Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft. With 250 illustrations, including previously unpublished drawings, rare film stills, confidential memoradums, and original photography, (this) is a candid and in-depth look at the company's skyrocketing success - and sensational collapse. Through the recollections of those who knew Claritone best, from its founders to its designers, engineers, and salesmen, and with comments from Karim Rashid, Douglas Coupland, Tyler Brule, and Bruce Mau, among others, this elegant book, published on the 50th anniversary of Clairtone's launch, celebrates an iconoclastic company that once seemed to represent the promise of Canada." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light rubbing, tiny scuff on front panel, soft wrinkling at top of rear flap and at top of front panel.

OTTAWA: THE CAPITAL OF CANADA., Woods, Shirley E., Jr.
9 Woods, Shirley E., Jr. OTTAWA: THE CAPITAL OF CANADA.
Toronto Doubleday Canada 1980 0385147228 / 9780385147224 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
350 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w pictorial endpapers, photographs, reproductions, map. "(T)ells the story of a major North American city, from its earliest beginnings to the present day. Etienne Brule, who portaged the Chaudiere Falls in 1610, was the first white man to view the site of the future capital. He was followed by a procession of explorers, fur traders, and missionaries, but it was not until the year 1800 that the first permanent settlers arrived in the area. By the time Colonel John By completed the Rideau Canal in 1832, Bytown had become a boom town. In 1858, Queen Victoria's choice of the newly named Ottawa as the capital of Canada assured it a central place in the history of the fledgling nation. This comprehensive and fast-paced narrative explores every aspect of Ottawa's development into a beautiful modern city that still retains much of the charm of a small town. It tells a lively tale of royalty and rogues, commerical buccaneers and civil servants, soldiers and statemen, missionaries and millionaires. From the laying of the cornerstone of the Parliament Buildings in 1860 to the Rideau Club fire of 1979, the author neglects no important civic event, nor any significant public or private enter-prise." 1" piece missing at bottom of front pastedown (folded under itself), tiny bump at top of spine, minor corner wear. Dust jacket has very light edge wear, tiny tear and creases at top of spine - archivally taped, minor rubbing.
