314 pp, 10" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, maps, floor plans, elevations, drawings, overlays. "For the first time, the architectural history of the town of Lexington and its t wo nationally distinguished campuses has been appraised in a scholarly fashion. This Valley of Virginia community together with Washington and Lee University and the Virginia Military Institute, presents exceptionally fine examples of American architectural styles from the late eighteenth to the early twentieth century. A remarkable number of architects of national reputation, including Thomas U. Walter, Alexander Jackson Davis, and Bertram G. Goodhue, completed important work here. This new study places the noteworthy buildings and their designers within the context of the architectural development of the Valley region and assesses their role in the evolution of the nation's styles. The volume is divided into three sections: the town, Washington and Lee, and VMI. In each, an essay on the history of the development of representative styles is followed by a photographic survey of the buildings." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling, minor rubbing/soiling, small tear/crease at top edge of front panel and one or two other tiny edge tears - all archivally taped.

Twelve-year-old Patty had been given some very special duties this year, in the extensive preparations for the historic procession which was to take place in the presence of His Royal Highness, the Prince. To paint a huge landscape for the Keep Alley Pageant Committee float, Patty had to retreat into the spacious cellar under her home - and it was there that she made an astonishing, unexpected discovery which helped solve the mystery and restore the good name of the town." Deadly showers of glass, bricks and red-hot metal spray everywhere, doing enormous damage and causing many deaths. Hundreds of people are buried alive in buildings which have collapsed. CREWE WORKS IN THE AGE OF STEAM: A PICTORIAL TRIBUTE., Talbot, Edward.
10 Talbot, Edward. CREWE WORKS IN THE AGE OF STEAM: A PICTORIAL TRIBUTE.
Hayes / Oxford Publishing, (Sparkford, 1987), reprint.
Unpaginated, 4to (11" H), hard cover in dust jacket. 213 b&w photographs. "Throughout the steam age, Crewe Works was one of the leading, if not the leading, railway works in the UK. Indeed, in 1913 'The Railway Magazine' described it as 'the most famous railway works in the world'. In its heyday (particularly under the London & North Western Railway) it was world renowned for its manufacture and repair of locomotives and carriages. In addition to rolling stock, the Works manufactured dozens of other items as diverse as steel rails and needles, bricks and gas mantles, and signals and lubricants. Moreover, it trained hundreds of railway engineers; who either entered the ranks of the LNWR, LMS or British Railways; or who went on to other British railway companies or to railways overseas in the British Empire and beyond. The influence of Crewe Works accordingly spread far from the confines of Crewe as a railway engineering centre...This album is designed to give a pictorial impression of Crewe Works in the steam age, and endeavours to portray some of the many achievements of the Works and the personnel who laboured within it." Faint cigarette odor, small bump to top corner of boards and at bott om edge of rear board. Dust jacket has a few small areas of light edge wrinkling. VG/VG

SUMMER MOONSHINE., Wodehouse, P.G. (Pelham Grenville.)
11 Wodehouse, P.G. (Pelham Grenville.) SUMMER MOONSHINE.
McCelland & Stewart, Toronto, (1938), first Canadian edition.
312 pp, small 8vo (7 3/4" h), hard cover (orange/red cloth with black lettering on spine and front board) - no dust jacket. "An Englishman's home may be his castle, but to Sir Buckstone Abbott, Walsinford Hall was nothing but a blot on the landscape. With its glazed red bricks, its dome and minarets, it so jarred upon his sensitive soul that it was his avowed intention to unload the unsightly pile on the first prospective buyer. His chance came when the Princess von und zu Dwornitzchek expressed the opinion that the Hall was 'cute' and began toying with the idea of purchasing it. And Sir Buckstone, desperately anxious lest she should change her mind, spared no effort to 'lush her up and keep her sweet'...This is a novel in the traditional Wodehouse manner, a story of complex situtation that will reduce the reader to tears of delight." Interior - small foxing mark in margin of page 224. Exterior - book lightly cocked, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, tiny tears at bottom of spine, light browning to edges of textblock, a few very small light stains on boards, very small foxing mark on fore-edge of textblock.
