SHAKER COMMUNITIES, SHAKER LIVES., Brewer, Priscilla J.
1 Brewer, Priscilla J. SHAKER COMMUNITIES, SHAKER LIVES.
Hanover, NH University Press of New England 1986 0874513626 / 9780874513622 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
273 pp, large 8vo (89 1/4" H). B&w photographs, tables. "Athough we know much about Shaker furniture, dance, textiles, and various artifacts, few books tell us about the Shakers as real people and the inner social workings of their sect. Who were the Shakers? What were their social, economic, and religious backgrounds? Why did they join this celibate, communal sect, and why did some leave while others stayed? What did they think of life inside the communities and the rapidly changing world outside? And, perhaps most important, when and why did the sect begin to decline, and how did Believers adjust to this decline? These are some of the questions Priscilla Brewer addresses in this engaging social history. Her highly readable general introduction to the Shakers challenges basic assumptions about the timing and reasons for the group's decline. Brewer studies the Shaker movement from its founding in 1774 to its last major public statement in 1904, restricting her work to the eleven Shaker communities in eastern New York and New England. (She) provides an inside look at Shaker life by recounting the group's social organization, the occupational roles of its members, the composition of its communities, and the operation of the Shaker hierarchy. Far from being a dry, sociological study, this book is filled with anecdotes and revealing stories related by the Shakers through the many writings they left behind." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, tiny foxing mark on fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket has minor edge wear and light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, slight fading to spine color.

With over 1,000 photographs combined, they remain the definitive record of the formative years for Navy and Marine Corps aviation. 6 Mika, Nick and Mika, Helma. With Larry Turner. HISTORIC MILLS OF ONTARIO.
Belleville, Ontario Mika Publishing 1987 0921341083 / 9780921341086 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
208 pp, 11 1/8" H. Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w photographs, reproductions. "(C)oncentrates on Ontario's saw, grist, flour and woollen mills, beginning with some of the early mills built by government before the 1800s to supply the needs of Loyalist settlers who came to Upper Canada. Although these mills have long since disappeared, they have been depicted by contemporary artists and their portrayals have been reproduced. Enterprising pioneers and later immigrants and their descendants in the 19th century harnessed the magnificent water power of Ontario's rivers and creeks, and the mills they erected on their banks in various counties are featured (here) in text and pictures. Historian Larry Turner gives a general overview of milling in Ontario and the significance of the role the miller played in the life and growth of 19th century communities. He explains basic milling methods, the mill machinery and technological advances, changing economic conditions that influenced the operation of mills, and he discusses restoration of the remaining heritage structures as a practical approach to their preservation. (W)ritten for anyone interested in Ontario's past, for history buffs and genealogists, for it tells about the people who built and operated the mills and about their successes and failures." Very minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wear/wrinkling, light edge wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, one small edge tear archivally taped, minor rubbing.

"This is an extensively researched and thorough history of British Columbia that represents a new departure in the political and historical literature of the province. (The) first volume covers the years to 1933, when Conservative Premier Tolmie was replaced by the Liberal Pattullo. (The second volume covers) the stormy years of T.D. Pattullo's war on the Great Depression, the Liberal-Conservative coalition against Socialism, the reign of W.A.C. Bennett and Social Credit during twenty years of scandal and controversy and, finally, the victory of the N.D.P. under Dave Barrett in the general election of August, 1972. 160 pp, 11 1/4" H. Marbled-pattern endpapers, color and b&w photographs, floor plans. This book "is for everyone interested in America's early Colonial homes but it is especially for those hoping to build or remodel an attractive, livable, comfortable and reasonably authentic Saltbox or Cape. (It) gives the six best ways to do this. But for you to do it in the charming tradition of our ancestors, you must first have a fairly complete understanding and appreciation of the original Saltboxes and Capes. You should know how they have changed and developed over the years. Despite the distinctive design and great age of the Saltbox, or Catslide, house - it was first built in America in about 1650 and goes back three centuries before that in England - this is the first book ever to discuss it fully. The equally old Cape Cod house is covered in the same way. (Approximately 140 houses are featured), half saltboxes, half Capes. Half are antique, half have been built in the past fifty years." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, two very tiny light stains on top of text block, minor scuff on fore-edge of front board.
