FASTEST IN THE WORLD: THE SAGA OF CANADA'S REVOLUTIONARY HYDROFOILS., Boileau, John.
1 Boileau, John. FASTEST IN THE WORLD: THE SAGA OF CANADA'S REVOLUTIONARY HYDROFOILS.
Formac, Halifax, 2004.
96 pp, large 8vo (9 1/8" H), soft cover. ISBN 088780621X B&w and colour photographs. "In the search for the perfect flying machine, hydrofoils were born. In 1919, Alexander Graham Bell and his young collaborator, Casey Baldwin, broke a world spe ed record when their hydrofoil prototype, HD4, skimmed across Lake Bras d'Or at 61.5 knots. This book is a complete re-examination of the Canadian research into hydrofoil vessels in the twentieth century. It describes how Baldwin and his c o l l e a g u e s, generously supported by Mabel Bell and under the guidance of the great inventor, built and tested numerous prototypes until they finally succeeded in building a high-speed hydrofoil for the navy. By the end of the Second World Wa r, C an ad a ha d th e third largest navy in the world and was set to be at the forefront of anti-submarine warfare. The Bell-Baldwin research was the foundation of the development of a small, fast vessel that could patrol the oceans, protectin g t he Wes t f rom t he Co ld War menace. Author John Boileau introduces the team of naval architects and engineers who tested prototypes in Halifax Harbour during the 1950s and 1960s. Their efforts led to HMCS Bras d'Or, the ultra-modern hydrofoi l ve sse l th at e stab lis hed an oth er world record before it was mothballed. Like the Avro Arrow story, 'Fastest in the World' exposes how brilliant innovation is not a guarantee of success for Canadian designers." Fine

BRITISH REGULAR CAVALRY, 1644-1914., Cooper, Leonard.
2 Cooper, Leonard. BRITISH REGULAR CAVALRY, 1644-1914.
London Chapman & Hall 1965 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
216 pp, 8vo (8 3/4"). Pictorial endpapers, b&w plates. "Mr. Cooper takes up his story with the formation of Cromwell's New Model Army, which marked a significant change in cavalry tactics, and closes it with a chapter devoted to the South African War and the years up to the beginning of the 1914 War. In addition, he has written an epilogue to cover the period of cavalry's gradual surrender to mechanisation. Between these points lie nearly three hundred years of history and countless battles which depended for their outcome on the ability and efficiency of the cavalry arm. (He) does not attempt to describe each of these battles in detail; rather, he is concerned, by giving accounts of a series of battles typical of a campaign, or of aspects of the training and tactics of cavalry - Blenheim, Dettingen, Salamanca, Waterloo, Balaclava, etc. - to give a historical impression of the arm's growth and achievements." NAPOLEON AND WELLINGTON., Roberts, Andrew.
8 Roberts, Andrew. NAPOLEON AND WELLINGTON.
London Weidenfeld & Nicolson 2001 0297646079 / 9780297646075 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
350 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w and colour illustrations, maps/battle plans. "At breakfast on the morning of the battle of Waterloo, the Emperor Napoleon declared that the Duke of Wellington was a bad general, the British were bad soldiers and that France could not fail to win an easy victory. Forever afterwards, historians have accused him of gross overconfidence and massively underestimating the calibre of the British commander opposed to him. Andrew Roberts presents an original, highly revisionist view of the relationship between the two greatest captains of their age. The fascinating, constantly changing relationship between these two historical giants forms the basis of (his) compelling study in pride, rivalry, propaganda, nostalgia and posthumous revenge." "...drawing upon contemporary diaries and reports of campaigns ranging from the Napoleonic Wars, the Crimea, South Africa and India to the First and Second World Wars, (the author) has recreated some of the many acts of heroism performed by the British soldier. Futile though some of them may have eventually proved, such as the infamous Charge of the Light Brigade and the tragic stand at Maiwand, there is no doubting the outstanding courage of their perpetrators. The words of men who were present at the scenes of conflict described here, successful or otherwise, speak more clearly and movingly than any second hand account."
