But even our seemingly changeless rural scenery, when viewed with the aid of time-lapse photography, is shown to be evolving - and in some unexpected ways." 7 O'Hara, Dale. ACRES OF GLASS: THE STORY OF THE DALE ESTATES AND HOW BRAMPTON BECAME "THE FLOWER TOWN OF CANADA".
Toronto Eastendbooks 2007 1896973396 / 9781896973395 Hard Cover Near Fine
170 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H), pictorial boards - no dust jacket (as issued). Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper. B&w photographs, reproductions. "It originated with an entrepreneurial spirit and the desire to succeed in the new world. It grew from an innate love of roses, their beauty, their scent and their challenge. It was tempered with a serendipitous meeting of two different business approaches. It forged the largest and most successful cut flower operation of its time. It expanded over the course of one hundred years from a solitary greenhouse to over forty acres under glass and then, within a span of ten years, it disappeared without a trace. It was the Dale Estate. (This) is a story of a family, of pride and ambition, of soaring dreams and unbridled success, and of security and stability for Brampton, a small Ontario town that grew to be recognized internationally as 'The Flower Town of Canada'. It is the story of the rise and fall of the company known as the Dale Estates, the third largest greenhouse operation in the world, a company that survived two world wars, a flue pandemic and the Great Depression, but could not withstand the crushing wheel of progress and the changing economy." Very minor rubbing to glossy boards.

THE SELECTED JOURNALS OF L.M. MONTGOMERY. VOLUME IV: 1929-1935., Rubio, Mary & Waterston, Elizabeth, editors. (L.M. Montgomery - Lucy Maud Montgomery.)
8 Rubio, Mary & Waterston, Elizabeth, editors. (L.M. Montgomery - Lucy Maud Montgomery.) THE SELECTED JOURNALS OF L.M. MONTGOMERY. VOLUME IV: 1929-1935.
Toronto Oxford University Press 1998 0195413814 / 9780195413816 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
439 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, maps. The fourth volume of 'The Selected Journals of L.M. Montgomery' "covers a tumultuous period in the writer's life. By 1929 she was 54 years old and known world-wide as the author of 'Anne of Green Gables' and many other books, yet this was also a time of numerous setbacks: the stock market crash, a drop in royalties from her many books, the need to provide her two sons with a university education while her husband's modest church salary was often in arrears, and the fact that many loans she made to friends and family were not repaid. She faced personal crises in relations with her sons and her husband and there was furious controvery in her husband's parish, Norval Presbyterian Church. She also felt concerns over her own mental state and she became the unwilling object of a young woman's declarations of passionate love. Yet this was not a period without joy: the volume opens with happy travels to Prince Edward Island and western Canada and ends with her looking forward with great excitement to a new life in Toronto. Besides providing an intimate look into the daily life of one of the world's best-loved authors, these journals can also be read as a fascinating social history of the early twentieth century. For example, Montgomery's health concerns provide intriguing insights into the state of medical practices. Readers may shudder slightly when a bout of asthma is treated with strychnine tablets or a 'bad chill' brings out a compound of arsenic." Minor wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top of spine.
