Recruited in the kingdom of Nepal since the early ninetee nth century, these short, wiry hillmen have served the kings and queens of Britain with such loyalty, tenacity, and incredible bravery that often the sound of their battle cry 'Ayo Gurkhali!' (roughly translated as 'Here come the Gurkhas!') h a s c a u s ed enemy soldiers to flee. The Gurkhas fought beside the British in the Indian Mutiny, in France and Mesopotamia during World War I, and in every theater during World War II. They have fought as well in countless small wars - 'the sav ag e w ar s of p eace' - including the Northwestern Frontier of India, Malaya, Borneo, and most recently the Falkland Islands. Their courage is legendary. Since 1911, when they first became eligible, thirteen Gurkhas have been awarded the Victori a C ro ss , a n unm atc hed record. This book will tell who the Gurkhas are and where they come from. It will describe their manners, customs, and character, and their history as soldiers, with special attention to their unique skills and remarkab le v alo r." Collins Harvill, London, 1990, first edition.
367 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0002711354 "With the mighty Sikh Khalsa, the finest army ever seen in Asia, poised to invade India and sweep Britainnia's ill-guarded empire into the sea, every able-bodied man was needed to defend the frontier - and one at least had his answer ready when the Call of Duty came: 'I'll swim in blood first!' For stalwart Harry Flashman, arch-rotter of the Victorian era and the most decorated poltroon in the Army, had not lately escaped fr om Borneo pirates, London bookies, slavery in Madagascar, and the embraces of a mad black queen, just to be plunged into even more dreadful peril - not if he could help it. Alas - there was no avoiding the terrors of secret service in the deba u c h e d and intrigue-ridden Court of the Punjab, the attentions of its beautiful nymphomaniac Maharani (not that he minded that, really), the horrors of its torture chambers, the plots of such fearsome figures as the Tartan Pathan, the Golden Hen , an d th e mysterious Man Who Would Be King, or the baleful influence of the Mountain of Light. And that was only the beginning: ahead lay the carnage of the bloodiest campaign ever fought in India, when Sikh, Briton, and Sepoy contended for an em pi re, a nd it s fate rested on a crazy old Irish gneral and the panic-stricken Flashy vainly trying to hide behind him." Stackpole, Harrisburg, Pa., 1966, first American edition.
291 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers, b&w photographs, reproductions, maps/battle plans. "For one hundred and fifty years the Gurkhas have been coming down from their mountain homes of Nepal to join the British Army. I n that time they have carved a reputation as the toughest, bravest and most lovable fighting troops in the world. Certainly they are the best known. (This book) tellls their exciting, humorous and moving story. The vast canvas ranges from t h e f o r mation of the first Gurkha Regiments on April 24, 1815, to their steadfastness during the Indian Mutiny, through the fierce nineteenth century wars on India's turbulent frontiers, into World War I in France, Mesopotamia, and Gallipoli. W e jo i n th em as they add further glory to their reputation during World War II in North Africa, Italy and the jungles of Burma. The post-war period tells of their activities in Malaya and Borneo, and of their last-ditch actions against the Ch ine se on t he co ld, bare mountains of India's disputed northern frontier. It is a story of great endurance, courage far beyond the call of duty, and of staunch loyalty to the British Crown. The Gurkhas suffered 45,000 casualties in the two W orld Wa rs. Th ey have won twelve VCs and countless other decorations for gallantry." Sandy Johnstone's post-war career was equally varied and in his book he recalls his experience as an Air Attache, founder of the Royal Malayan Air Force, Commander of the Commonwealth Air Forces when he saw action in Borneo and as Air Officer, Scotland and Northern Ireland, during which time he also held a number of important N.A.T.O. commands..." 283 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs, maps. "Together with the SAS, LRDG and other such specialist units, the Special Boats Squadron traces its origins back to the Mediterranean theatre of operations during the Second World War. Originally part of Laycock's 8 Commando, the SBS rapidly developed its own skills, expertise and identity, despite technically serving as part of the SAS for much of the war. After the war, these 'pirates' became a unit within the Royal Marines and served throughout the world during the 'post-imperial peace'. Their activities have, until now, rarely been revealed. While the SAS has become world-famous for anti-terrorist exploits in the full glare of publicity, the SBS role was little known until it came to prominence in the Falklands conflict. There, SBS teams operated in parallel with their SAS counterparts, probing the Argentine-held islands and feeding back essential intelligence information. In an island war, they were very much in their element, and they played a key part in reconnoitring the eventual landing site for the Task Force at San Carlos." Three small light liquid marks on rear board. Dust jacket has some very light wrinkling at top edge, very light rubbing.

ALL ELEVATIONS UNKNOWN: AN ADVENTURE IN THE HEART OF BORNEO., Lightner, Sam, Jr.
10 Lightner, Sam, Jr. ALL ELEVATIONS UNKNOWN: AN ADVENTURE IN THE HEART OF BORNEO.
New York Broadway Books 2001 0767907566 / 9780767907569 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good+
239 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). Map endpapers. "In the spring of 1999, armed with little more than a descriptiion from a book and a map labeled 'all elevations unknown', Sam Lightner and his German rock-climbing buddy, Volker, found themselves deep in the jungles of Borneo on a mission to climb a mountain that was only rumored to exist. They had only their climbing expertise to rely on and a copy of a little-known book titled 'World Within', written by Major Tom Harrisson, a British World War II soldier who had been one of the first white men ever to explore the interior jungles of the island and interact with its native peoples. He had also constructed one of the most daring and unusual campaigns in military history: In 1945, he had been assigned the near-impossible mission of parachuting blindly into the thick Borneo rain forests to unite the feuding native tribes - who then had a grisly habit of cutting off heads - against the Japanese in order to reclaim the island for the Allies. A captivating, utterly original combination of travel-adventure memoir and historical re-creation, (this book) charts Lightner's exhilarating, often harrowing quest to ascend the mountain Batu Lawi in the face of leeches, vipers, and sweat bees, and to keep his team together in one of the earth's most treacherous uncharted pockets. Along the way, (he) reconstructs a fascinating historical narrative that chronicles Tom Harrisson's adventures in Borneo during the war and illuminates an astonishing piece of forgotten World War II history. Rife with suspense and vivid detail, the two intertwining tales open up the island of Borneo, its people, and its history in a powerful, unforgettable way, and take adventure writing to new heights - ultimately the remarkable story of two adventures, separated by fifty years and united by one mountain." Dust jacket has some very light wrinkling along top edge, minor rubbing.

"From Bruneval to North Africa, from Normandy to Suez, by parachute and glider the men of the Airborne Forces have gone by air to battle. But their activities have by no means been confined to purely airborne operations - the Special Air Service performed prodigies of valour behind the German Lines in the Western Desert and Italy; the Glider Pilot Regiment fought beside their infantry com rades in Normandy, at Arnhem and across the Rhine. Their post-war successors, maintaining these traditions, have stood between Jew and Arab in Palestine; fought and sweltered in the jungles of Malaya and Borneo; sweated in the Persian Gulf a n d t h e Radfan; choked on the summer dust of Cypriot roads; tasted the grit and sand of Egypt and Jordan in their mess tins; spent more than a deade facing terroritst ambush, bombs and bullets in Northern Ireland; exprienced the subzero temperat ur es an d bi t ing actic winds of the South Atlantic and 'tabbed' across the Falklands to spearhead victory in 1982. Nor should the aircrews who flew them be forgotten, or the air supply despatchers who maintained them, and the units who supporte d t hem . W it h w el l over 100 photographs and illustrations this book is a comprehensive single-volume history of the Airborne Forces. Accounts are given of the airborne actions fought by the British Army, whilst the development of the parachu te a ssau lt and th e us e o f glider-borne troops can be followed from their infancy to the massive 'coup de main' technique employed in the Rhine crossing."
