THE ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS SOCIAL HISTORY OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR., Bishop, James. Foreword by Lord Blake.
1 Bishop, James. Foreword by Lord Blake. THE ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS SOCIAL HISTORY OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR.
London Angus & Robertson 1982 0207148260 / 9780207148262 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
144 pp, 10 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w reproductions of photographs, drawings, advertisements. "The First World War, which claimed the lives of so many men on the battlefields of the Western Front, also profoundly affected the character and everyday life of the nation at home. It was the first 'total war' and the whole country contributed to the war effort. The unrelenting demands of the trenches eventually forced the Government to introduce conscription while, for those left behind, the state intervened more and more in the lives of its citizens. Hardships increased: food and fuel were in very short supply and rationing had to be imposed in 1916. The civilian population was also directly involved in the hostilities with the bombing raids of zeppelins and aeroplanes. But the war did bring some changes for the better. The salaried classes grew, working conditions improved and the war also helped liberate women who replaced men in factories and public services, and joined the armed forces. When the armistice finally came, in November 1918, Lloyd George promised 'a fit country for heroes to live in' - though the reality proved to be less Utopian. The Illustrated London News continued to publish throughout the First World War and was supplemented by The Illustrated War News. These magazines provided a vivid pictorial chronicle of contemporary events and enable us, today, to enter into the spirit of a bygone era. (The author) has written a fascinating and fully-documented account of these momentous years, complemented by over 200 pictures from the original issues." Light edge wear to boards. Dust jacket has one tiny edge tear, light foxing at top & bottom inside edges, very light edge wrinkling, a few tiny dents and faint line indentations on front panel.

Heinemann, London, 1987, reprint.
374 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0434074101 "Nearly twenty years after the present wave of conflict began in Northern Ireland, the Provisional IRA is still an active destabilising force within the United Kingdom. Yet despite the huge loss of life and the consequent political distortions and upheavals it has created, remarkably little is known about it. This authoritiative new book, the first full-length study to be undertaken since the Troubles began i n 1 9 6 9 , examines the IRA in depth, analysing its leaders, its objectives and structure. Aided by numerous, unusually frank interviews with the men who run the organisation and key figures in the Security Forces, the authors trace the IRA's pr og r es si on f ro m disarray in the early 1960s to powerful political force in the late 1980s. They explore the movement's inner workings, explaining the commitment and life of its participants and shedding new light on some of the recent lan dma rks i n t he oft en blo od y history of Republicanism; internment, the hunger strikes, the mainland bombing campaign, the development of the IRA's dual strategy of 'armalite and ballotbox'....a uniquely informative and thought-provoking book, o ne w hich wi ll i tse lf p rov e a lan dmark in the study of Irish history." GREAT INTERRUPTION. AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY 1939-45., Irving, Laurence.
3 Irving, Laurence. GREAT INTERRUPTION. AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY 1939-45.
Shrewsbury Airlife 1983 0906393299 / 9780906393291 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
235 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H). B&w photographs. "As Senior Intelligence Officer of 35 Wing, Irving studied and furthered the technical and tactical resources of low level photographic reconnaissance and the prompt distribution of intelligence derived from it. The unacceptable casualties incurred by 35 Wing in supporting the raid on Dieppe were proof of the tardy recognition by Army/Air planning staffs of the need for total co-operation between the Services in action if the liberation of Europe was to be achieved. The theme of this book is the contribution of 35 Wing to the preparation and achievement of Operation Overlord, the reconnoitring of V1 missile sites in France that subsequent bombing rendered inoperable and, above all, its services to 1st Canadian Army throughout the ensuing campaign. This personal record reflects an abiding memory and admiration for the skills, the devotion to duty, the light hearted companionship and dauntless courage of pilots inspired by exemplary and discerning commanding officers." Slight bump to bottom corner of rear board, minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling.

BESIEGED: THE WORLD WAR II ORDEAL OF MALTA, 1940-1942., Jellison, Charles A.
4 Jellison, Charles A. BESIEGED: THE WORLD WAR II ORDEAL OF MALTA, 1940-1942.
University of New Hampshire / University Press of New England, (Hanover, NH), 1984, first edition.
288 pp, large 8vo (9 3/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers, b&w photos, map. ISBN 0874513138 "During the early years of the Second World War, the tiny island of Malta withstood months of incessant heavy bombing and blockade by the Axis powers. Because of its strategic location and excellent harbor facilities, retention of Malta was of utmost importance for the British. Conversely, its surrender or neutralization as an offensive base was given the highest priority by the enemy. For more than two years this lonely outpost (the sole British base between Gibraltar and Alexandria) was subjected to the heaviest sustained bombing ever unleashed upon so small an area, while its people were increasingly deprived of food, medicine, and virtually all other necessities of life by the ever-tightening stranglehold of the Axis blockade. This fine narrative conveys in a lively, moving fashion the effects of that extraordinary period on the populace of Malta. This is not a military history, but rather extremely readable social history set against the backdrop of military events. It deals principally with the effect of the blockade upon island life, and is the first book to present the Maltese war experience from a Maltese point of view. It recounts the story of how a simple, deeply religious people who had never experienced modern warfare reacted to the brutal, grueling ordeal of a war that was none of their making. Growing out of the author's interest in and extended visits to Malta, the book's special features include extensive use of material from diaries and personal recollections extracted from dozens of interviews with actual participants in the drama. " Small faint scuff to fore-edge of textblock, minor wrinkling at bottom of spine, a few tiny soiling marks on rear board. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light rubbing, tiny scuff on front panel. VG+/V G

203 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w photographs, maps, drawings. "Only five minutes from launch to impact: not even enough time to give an air raid alert. They could not be tracked: they travelled too high and too fast to be shot down. These were the rocket 'Vengeance Weapons', launched in addition to the flying bombs in retaliation for British and American bombing raids on German cities. Damage inflicted upon London was considerable: 198 were killed by a flying bomb in the Aldwych, hundreds died at New Cross, and over one hundred civilians lost their lives in Smithfield Market. (The author) examines the effects of the V-1 flying bombs and V-2 rockets on a capital still showing the scars of the 1940-41 blitz. On 6th June 1944, only a few hours after the D-Day landings, orders were passed down from German High Command to prepare the 'Vengeance Weapons' for an immediate assault on Britain." HITLER ON THE DOORSTEP. OPERATION 'SEA LION': THE GERMAN PLAN TO INVADE BRITAIN, 1940., Kieser, Egbert. Translated by Helmut Bogler.
7 Kieser, Egbert. Translated by Helmut Bogler. HITLER ON THE DOORSTEP. OPERATION 'SEA LION': THE GERMAN PLAN TO INVADE BRITAIN, 1940.
Naval Institute Press, Annapolis, Maryland, 1997.
287 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1557503907 B&w photographs, maps. "During the summer of 1940, the world held its breath. The greatest operation in German military history thus far - an invasion of the British Isles - was Hitler's next logical step. After the rapid overthrow of France, Great Britain was the only opponent still left. In London, the invasion was considered absolutely inevitable. Joseph Kennedy, the American Ambassador, described an even darker scenario in his reports to Washington. He not only questioned the effectiveness of the military defence, but considered the island kingdom to be in such a state of decadence and decay that any moral resistance would collapse under a German a s s a u l t . All Britain was convinced that the Germans would come. They had nothing left with which to oppose the German panzers. In only five weeks the Germans had crushed France and expelled the BEF from Belgium. Now those panzers stood on t he C ha nn el c oast, waiting for the order to send them to England. But it was remarkably difficult for the German military leadership to come to a decision. Greatest haste appeared to be called for if the unique opportunity were to be seized a nd the wa r e nde d w ith a short campaign in England. The Kriegsmarine had already converted all available ship space for the transportation of troops and brought it to the Channel coast. By day and by night, German bomber and fighter formations fl ew i nto Engl and to b reak British resistance. The Luftwaffe was to create the primary condition for Operation 'Sea Lion' - gaining command of the air, without which a landing on the English coast was impossible. The fight developed into the 'Bat tle o f Br itain ', i n whi ch the very existence of Great Britain was at stake. If the German squadrons could not only gain the upper hand in the air battles, but also destroy the major ports and paralyse British aircaft industry, nothing mor e wou ld sta nd in the w ay of the i nvasion. Those events and the decision made during Britian's nightmare summer of 1940 receive a fresh and penetrating analysis in this book." 9 Leckie, Robert. DELIVERED FROM EVIL: THE SAGA OF WORLD WAR II.

998 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). Map endpapers. B&w maps. "World War II eventually involved every major power in the world, and before it was over some fifty million people lost their lives. (This) is a complete political and military history of World War II. Written with the pace and sweep of a fine novel, it makes the period, its major leaders, and the events not only comprehensible but also alive and real. Robert Leckie begins his book with the punitive treaty of Versailles and the fumbling efforts of the Western democracies to cope with the rise of Mussolini and Hitler. He draws vivid profiles of the political leaders, generals, and admirals who created and fought the war; describes the battles; analyzes the military strategy; considers the economic and political factors; and tells of the daily lives of those who were engaged on the far-flung fronts and those who endured at home. Churchill, Stalin, Roosevelt, MacArthur, Tojo, Eisenhower, Montgomery, Rommel and many other fascinating individuals become live protagonists on the stage sets of such dramatic sites as Stalingrad, Tobruk, Guadalcanal, Dunkirk, Leningrad, Monte Cassino, Midway, Omaha Beach, and Iwo Jima. Readers of all ages will find Leckie's powerful, action-packed narrative both compelling and comprehensive, and they will gain fascinating insights into one of the greatest and most awful events in human history." New York Longmans, Green 1960 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
282 pp, 8 1/4" H. Pictorial endpapers. "Here is a dramatic re-creation of England during those eventful days when Britain fought alone and when defeat of Britain would have been the defeat of hope. How close the batle was, how much hung in the balance and how that battle went is presented by the distinguished correspondent Drew Middleton who was reporting the events for the Associated Press. The forces at the command of the RAF - charged to defend the British Isles - were pitifully small in comparison to those of the German Luftwaffe, out to break the back of the English. An impartial military observer would have scoffed at the idea that so few would be able to do so much to so many. If the Luftwaffe had destroyed the RAF, there is no doubt that ultimately Britian would have fallen, little doubt that the history of the war and that of the world would have taken a different turning. How and why the tide of battle changed, what motives lay behind the German switch in tactics, what might have happened and came so close to happening - the story is superbly and dramatically told in (this) brilliant portrayal of a nation and a people battling for life." Knowledgeable and candid, her account of the Blitz differs, often dramatically, from the official histories of the War and from much that has been written since...Barbara Nixon i s e x t r e mely funny, as she weighs up, one by one, the new colleagues she is thrown in with on the night shift at an Air Raid Wardens' post in central London. She is sad as she remembers comforting homeless children, their houses in ruins, t h ei r p ar en ts u nd iscovered. Often exhausted and sometimes frightened, she is angry with the Government and the local council, for their neglect of the poor, whose shelter was inadequate, often insanitary and occasionally more dangerous than t he ho us es the y l eft . 276 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, maps. "In 1886 Alexander Ulyanov, a brilliant biology student, joined a small group of students at St. Petersburg University to plot the assassination of Russia's tsar. Calling themselves the 'Terrorist Faction of the People's Will', they planned to kill Alexander III on March 1, 1887, the sixth anniversary of his father's assassination by the People's Will. Thus known to history as the 'Second First March', the young terrorists failed disastrously in their mission, and five of them, Alexander Ulyanov included, were hanged. Alexander would have been just another casualty in the long history of Russian revolutionary martyrs were it not for one detail: his younger brother, Vladimir, led the October Revolution of 1917 under his assumed name, 'Lenin'. Exploring the rich array of published documents and the recently opened archives of post-Soviet Russia, (the author) illuminates the mystery at the heart of this story. How did a respectable family preparing its children for professional careers produce both a terrorist and the author of the October Revolution?" Very minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. "The German attempt to break the morale of the British by bombing London in 1940 did not succeed, so two years later, they switched their targets to the undefended cathedral cities of Exeter, Bath, York, Canterbury and Norwich, cities marked in Karl Baedeker's famous guidebook with three stars. Hence the name by which they came to be known. This time the British were not slow to retaliate and the punishment rained down upon the unfortunate people of Hamburg and Cologne surpassed in ferocity anything that had gone before. From now on the morale of the civil population came to be regarded as a legitimate target in the battle to break the enemy's will. Charles Whiting describes in detail the Baedeker raids on the cathedral cities of England and the retaliatory raids on Germany, illustrating his story with the recollections of many of those who survived the raids. He analyses the personalities of the Top Brass on both sides who authorized the bombings and shows how the change in attitude to indiscriminate bombing gradually came about. It is a gruesome yet fascinating story, told with all the vividness which readers of Charles Whiting's books will have come to expect." Minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. "....history of the defeat of the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Army at the hands of the American and Allied troops from 1961 through 1973. It ch ronicles, in detail, the virtual annihilation of the Viet Cong by the late 1960s. The book then recounts the first wholesale introduction of North Vietnamese Army troops onto the battlefield in 1964 and America's response - the landing of U . S . g r o u nd forces in early 1965. Battle by battle, from Ia Drang through Khe Sanh through Linebacker Operations, 'Unheralded Victory' presents a convincing and accurate picture of the American victory. Why is it then, that American and al li ed s uc c es se s ha ve not been publicized and, instead, such negative images of allied military involvement dominate the discourse? Much of this can be attributed to the very successful propaganda campaign run by Hanoi, often unwittingly aide d a nd abe tte d by wes te rn observers. (This book) looks at the myths this campaign created and debunks them one by one. It closely analyzes the morale of the troops, the attitudes of the American people about the war, the frequency of drug use, the 'f ragg ing' m urd ers, an d o ther myths which dominate the discourse on the war. In the process, (it) suggests a much more positive view of not just the outcome of the war, but also of American morale, competence, and performance.
